THANKSGIVING Gratitude is the inward feeling of kindness received. Thankfulness is the natural impulse to express that feel- Mass will be celebrated in ing. Thanksgiving is the following of that impulse. Corpus Christi Church --Henry Van Dyke on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day November 28, 2013 at 8:30 a.m. There will be no Mass on A Stewardship Moment Friday November 29. In today’s Gospel we hear of the rulers who sneered Consider coming to Mass to give thanks at Jesus, the soldiers who jeered at him, the criminal to God for the many blessing in our lives. who reviled him, and the people who just stood by. At our own parish church the cross stands high. Yet, Call To Prayer every Sunday there are those who sit in front of it and are not moved by it. There are people who walk right Join us for a Eucharistic Holy Hour for Life, Marriage by the cross, unmoved by it. Perhaps they’ve walked and Religious Liberty to be held November 24, at 3:00 by it so many times they no longer give it a second pm at St. Petronille Church in Glen Ellyn. There will be thought. Could it be they are unmoved because the Eucharistic Adoration, readings, readings, songs, and a heart of the unbelieving thief is in them? Good stew- short reflection. "As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God's varied grace" (1 Pt 4:10).

What identifies a steward? Safeguarding material and human resources and using them responsibly are one answer; so is generous giving of time, talent, and treasure. But being a Christian steward means more: As Christian stewards, we receive God's gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly, share them lovingly in justice with others, and return them with increase to the Lord.

Disciples as Stewards Jesus calls us to be disciples. This has astonishing implications: • Mature disciples make a conscious decision to follow Jesus, no matter what the cost. • Christian disciples experience conversion—lifeshaping changes of mind and heart—and commit their very selves to the Lord. • Christian stewards respond in a particular way to the call to be a . • Stewardship has the power to shape and mold our understanding of our lives and the way in which we live. • We recognize God as the origin of life, giver of freedom, and source of all things. • We are grateful for the gifts we have received and are eager to use them to show our love for God and for one another.

Stewards of the Church Stewards of God's gifts are not passive beneficiaries. We cooperate with God in our own redemption and in the redemp- tion of others. We are also obliged to be stewards of the Church—collaborators and cooperators in continuing the re- demptive work of Jesus Christ, which is the Church's essential mission.

Our mission: • Proclaiming • Teaching, • Serving and Sanctifying

It is the personal responsibility of each one of us as stewards of the Church. All members of the Church have their own roles to play in carrying out its mission: • Parents, who nurture their children in the light of faith; • Parishioners, who work in concrete ways to make their parishes true communities of faith and vibrant sources of ser- vice to the larger community; • All Catholics, who give generous support—time, money, prayers, and personal service according to their circum- stances—to parish and diocesan programs and to the universal Church. Obstacles to Stewardship People who want to live as Christian disciples face serious obstacles. In the United States and other nations, a dominant secular culture often contradicts religious convictions about the meaning of life. This culture frequently encourages us to focus on ourselves and our pleasures.

The life of a Christian models the life of Jesus. It is challenging and even difficult, in many respects, yet intense joy comes to those who take the risk to live as Christian stewards. We look to Mary as an ideal steward. As the Mother of Christ, she lived her ministry in a spirit of fidelity and service; she responded generously to the call. We must ask our- selves:

Do you wish to be disciple of Jesus Christ?

Will you respond generously to the poor, sick, imprisoned, refugee, and immigrant?

Will you generously support the life, mission and work of the Church?

Lighthouse Catholic Media offers a practical and effective program to help Catholics know their Faith, keep their Faith, and share their Faith! We all have friends or family members who have fallen away from the Church, or loved ones who are searching for answers about their Faith and want to increase their knowledge and understanding but don’t know where to begin. Now you can reach out to them by offering a wonderful learning tool - a Lighthouse CD. Whether in the car or at home, people can deepen their understanding of the Catholic Faith when they listen to inspiring talks given by some of the best Catholic speakers in the world. Each week we will be featuring a CD. This week it’s inspiring speaker Fr. Larry Richards who presents exciting and powerful insights into the history, spirituality, and biblical foundations of the Liturgy of the Eucharist. He opens the door for us to enter more profoundly into this most perfect prayer and unite our offering with that of the priest. This will change the way you experience this most sacred of all mysteries, the source and summit of our lives. This Advent why not take advantage of the many new CD we have to offer.
