Postage 14521 Northwest Blvd. PAID Corpus Christi, TX 78410 Address Service Requested Corpus Christi, TX Permit No. 690 361.933.0109 www.ccgrace.org As I write this, it is quite cool (even a little chilly!) outside. This is a reminder that the season is changing. Although we get a lot of warm weather here, we know that the cool weather will eventually arrive. We’re starting to wear long-sleeved shirts, pants instead of shorts, even sweaters, sweatshirts, and jackets. Just as we know that warm weather will eventually give way to cooler weather and the sun will rise later and set earlier, we know that changes of season come in our lives, as well. As most of you have learned by now, I am anticipating a major change in the season of my life. I recently made an official request to the bishop to retire from active ministry effective July 1, 2019. This is a major change of season for me. I began to serve as the pastor of a small congregation just after my junior year of college when I was a very young 21-year-old. This was a major change in season for me at that time. Soon after I was appointed to be the pastor at FUMC in Loraine, TX but before Joan and I had moved into the parsonage, I was out there visiting with the lay leader of the church. While we were talking, another member of that church walked up. The lay leader greeted her and said, “This is the new preacher.” I literally turned around to see to whom he was referring; I was so unaccustomed to being referred to as “the preacher!” I could tell other humorous stories from that time, like my first hospital visit, etc. Over the years I have experienced other changes in season as I went from college to seminary while serving as a music director and youth director; then a major change in season as I graduated from seminary and began ministry as an ordained United Methodist pastor. Along the way there were changes in season as I moved from one congregation to another, living in different communities, serving different congregations. Although these were all seasonal changes, they were all part of the same journey of serving in ministry in some way or preparing to do so. But this seasonal change will be a major one. For the first time in my life since I was in college, I will not be “working” to earn my income. For the first time in 36 years, I will not be in “active” status as a clergy member of the Rio Texas Conference but will be in “retired” status. And most of all, for the first time in a very long time, I will no longer be pastor of a congregation. Although I believe this coming summer is the right time for me to enter into this new season of life and ministry, I’m aware that the change will be huge. There are many aspects of this change that I will welcome, of course. But there are also many losses I will grieve. I will be sorting through all of that in anticipation of this seasonal change over the next several months. This will also be a change of season for you as a congregation. Certainly, those of you who have been part of Grace for a good while have experienced the change of season represented by a pastoral transition before – perhaps many times. You have some idea of what this means, both the grief of present loss and the hope for the future. We will also have an opportunity over the next several months to sort through these feelings. From my previous experience in pastoral transitions, I know this: it is important to express our feelings about it to each other. I look forward to those conversations.
