Part of the focus of this issue is on The Hutchins School’s association with the aquatic environment of Tasmania and there are a number of interesting articles about people and events that highlight the close and successful relationship The Hutchins School has had and continues to envisage with its maritime connections.     OBITUARIES Mr. F.E.Mcelhone Died on 21St July, 1981, Aged 94. Thus

    OBITUARIES Mr. F.E.McElhone died on 21st July, 1981, aged 94. Thus passed the oldest former University player at the time of his death and the last survivor of a University 1st Grade Premiership side. Eric McElhone first played for University in 1905-06 and, during a career which spanned 8 seasons and earned him 2053 runs in 1st Grade, he was a member of the Premiership sides of 1909-10 and 1911-12. His all too brief first class career brought 369 runs for NSW at an average of 41. Eric McElhone was an upright, free-flowing batsman who scored elegantly on the off side with a fine flourish. As a cover point, he had few peers at a time when the University side was a brilliant fielding unit. A handsome pedigree assisted his cricket development immeasurably. His father, Frank, had been one of the founding members of the Waverley Club. One uncle, W.P.McElhone, was chairman of the Australian Cricket Board, and another. Dr. H.V.Hordern, captured 12 wickets with his leg breaks on his Test debut against England in 1911. After years of much success with University, where his trojan deeds in the annual Melbourne Intervarsity matches were legend, McElhone hit up an eye-catching 148 against Middle Harbour at the S.C.G. in 1910 and was chosen in the powerful N.S.W. side. He thus achieved double State honours, having also played baseball for N.S.W. In his second 1st Class match, his 101 against Victoria was made with the grace and ease of a veteran.

    May 2000 Mariners Men's and Women's Volleyball Teams win silver medals at National Competition The Mariner Women's Volleyball team came very close to winning a national title last March in Sherbrooke, Quebec. After losing the fIrst two games (25-23, 25-18) in the CCAA national volleyball fmal against F. X. Garneau Elans of Quebec, the M's fought back (28-30, 25-22) to force a fIfth and deciding game which was won by Quebec. Along with the Silver Medal, the Mariner Women brought home the CCAA Most Spirited Award, otherwise known as the fair play award. This is Malaspina's third fair play award. The Mariner Men's Volleyball team lost to a very strong team from Red Deer, Alberta in the CCAA national fmal held in Grande Prairie, Alberta, March 2-5. Red Deer ended the Mari­ ner's winning streak of 10 consecutive matches that got them into the fmal match. Malaspina Men defeated Niagara College of Ontario in the opening round and Grande Prairie in the semi­ fmals. VISUAL ARTS 11.1 A Brief History of Visual Arts in Australia The visual arts in Australia have a very long history. In Rattling Spears: A History of Indigenous Australian Art (2016), Ian McLean indicates that Indigenous communities across the country produced symbolic work that carried meaning for its users for aeons before colonisation saw the paintbrushes of Joseph Lycett and John Glover represent the new settlements and the recent arrival of Europeans. A number of works outline the history of art in Australia (Hughes 1970, Smith 1960, 1979, 1990 and 2000, Sayers 2001, Anderson 2011, Grishin 2013). Christopher Allen in Art in Australia: From Colonization to Postmodernism (1997) sets out the stages he believes Australian Art has progressed through, from the early colonial to high colonial, the Heidelberg School, Federation, Modernism, Abstraction and Social Realism, as seen in the work of the Angry Penguins, Postmodern pluralism and more recently, contemporary art from the 1990s onward. Beginning with Joseph Banks’ illustrations of flora and fauna during Cook’s voyage to Australia, followed by George Stubbs’ ‘Kongouro’ painting in 1772, images of the flora and fauna of the continent entered the consciousness of Europeans. New settler artists, some of them convicted felons, drew and painted their new home, including its indigenous people. Joseph Lycett, for example, painted ‘Corroboree at Newcastle’ in 1818 while John Glover’s ‘Corroboree at Mills Plains’ in 1832 represented life in Van Diemen’s Land.
