His philosophy is shaped by the thoughts of Socrates and Stoicism, therefore, before his main thoughts Socrates‘ and Stoic‘s philosophy under the scope of happiness will be analyzed. Firstly, the focus will be on Socrates‘ philosophy of happiness, but before that, in order to pull the reader out of the blurry thoughts about historical Socrates and Platonic Socrates dilemma, I will try to prove that Socrates has basic ideas on happiness benefitting from different dialogues and writers. Then, with the Stoic views, the acceptance about passion and pleasures are the blockage of virtue actions will be presented. Finally, I will scrutinize the teachings of Epictetus which will show to the reader that a life which is subjected to passion and pleasures cannot be labeled as happiness. People in modern societies hold an understanding of happiness that represents a materialistic view. For modern people, an individual‘s degree of happiness is defined by the assets that the person has or by the power that she or he holds in society. A closer inquiry reveals an abundance of examples that demonstrate how pervasive this conception of happiness is. For example, when evaluating the happiness of a mature woman or man, one factor frequently taken into consideration is success or failure in marrying and starting a family. Likewise, when an undergraduate student‘s understanding of happiness is scrutinized, likely answers involve graduating successfully, getting a job with a perfect salary after college, and increasing one‘s standard of living by acquiring more and more material assets. In addition to defining happiness in terms of material things and social position, modern people also conceive of happiness as a temporary state. Both of these views on happiness are shaped by a materialistic perspective, one that is radically criticized by the ancient Greek philosophers. The ancient Greek philosophers regard happiness with different attitudes and ideas. First of all, they hold that eudaimonia–a key term that refers to happiness with relation to the virtues and the fulfillment of human nature–can be achieved only over a complete lifetime. Ancient philosophers share three main ideas regarding eudaimonia: 1 that it results from virtuous actions; that these actions must be integrated with rational principles; and that they must be carried out not only for one‘s inward

Socratic dialogue is derived from the work of the Greek philosopher, Socrates, who developed what is now called the Socratic method of teaching. In traditional education, the teacher is presumed to know more than the student, and the role of the teacher is to transmit the teacher’s knowledge to the student. In contrast, Socrates believed that the role of the teacher should not be to tell students what the “truth” is but to help them discover the truth themselves through a collaborative process of asking questions. By asking a series of questions designed to get the student to identify logical contradictions in their positions and/or evidence that does not support their thoughts, the Socratic method is designed to help the student discover the “truth” for themselves as opposed to being told what the “truth” is by the teacher. Socrates also thought this teaching method was superior because it teaches students the skill of critical thinking, a skill they can use throughout their lives. Another advantage of this method is that students are more likely to value knowledge if they discover it themselves than if someone tells them about it. In CPT, the purpose of Socratic questioning by the therapist is to prompt the patient to examine the accuracy of maladaptive thoughts that are causing psychological distress.

    Out of Closets: Rhetorics of Stoic Philosophy in Eighteenth-Century Discourses of Sentiment Randall Cream The Spectator was one of those cultural icons whose importance was obvious even as it was being established. While it was not the first popular broadsheet to captivate its London readership, the Spectator proved to be a powerful voice in the rapid transformation of London culture in the early decades of the eighteenth century. In their publication of the Spectator, Joseph Addison and Richard Steele were able to substantially affect the eighteenth-century marketplace of ideas by regularizing the cultivation of morality as central to this milieu. Within the pages of the Spectator, morality emerges as a reciprocal relationship between virtuous individuals and a just civil society, forging a bridge between public good and private virtue while retaining the separate categories.1 As Alan McKenzie notes, the Spectator’s focus on social relations as a proper ethical sphere coincides with its function “of inculcating classical values and morals for a new, partly financial and mercantile public” (89).2 McKenzie’s work analyzes the complex relationship developed between the Spectator and its reader, a relationship that characterizes moral instruction, social connections, and self-understanding as “‘humanizing’ this new public” (89). But we can go further. One function of the Spectator’s specific combination of an ethics of interiority and a socialized network of moral relationships is the articulation of a subjectivity characterized by affective performance and self-restraint. This curious subjectivity, profoundly eighteenth-century in its split focus, is intricately linked to the discourses that compose the Spectator.

Happiness as a state of mind may be universal, but its meaning is complex and ambiguous. The authors directly examined the relationships between cultural values and experiences of happiness in 2 samples, by using a measurement of values derived from Chinese culture and a measurement of subjective well-being balanced for sources of happiness salient in both the East and the West. The participants were university stu- dents—439 from an Eastern culture (Taiwan) and 344 from a Western culture (the United Kingdom). Although general patterns were similar in the 2 samples, the relationships between values and happiness were stronger in the Taiwanese sample than in the British sample. The values social integration and human-heartedness had culture-dependent effects on happiness, whereas the value Confucian work dynamism had a culture-general effect on happiness.     PLATO’S EUTHYDEMUS: A STUDY ON THE RELATIONS BETWEEN LOGIC AND EDUCATION Plato’s Euthydemus is an unlucky dialogue. Few dealt with it in its own right, not just as part of a wider discussion of Plato, and fewer still saw in it more than a topic of sophistic fallacies. Some, of course, paid attention to the constructive sections of the dialogue, but only rarely do we come across a real attempt to unify its different aspects.1 In this paper I propose to show how, in the Euthydemus, Plato tries to distinguish between the Socratic and the Sophistic conceptions of education, by tracing them to their roots in the opposing views of the Sophists — and especially those of the second generation — and of Socrates about truth and about the role of logic. And although the eristic techniques of Euthydemus and Dionysodorus are obviously fallacious, they turn out to be developments of Protagoras’ views and follow from philosophical positions worthy of serious examination. The Euthydemus is a caricature, to be sure. But, as all good caricature, it has a serious intent. It sketches the degeneration of the Sophistic approach to education, in some of its aspects. More important­ ly, it distinguishes Socratic education from the methods and effects of its Sophistic counterpart. Euthydemus and Dionysodorus, the two sophist brothers, are reminis­ cent of the great Sophists of the Protagoras in more than one way. They are polymaths like Hippias, and at one time or another have taught a variety of arts, from forensic rhetoric to armed combat. Also, they have Prodicus’ penchant for linguistic analysis.

    Induction in the Socratic Tradition John P. McCaskey Stanford University Abstract: Aristotle said that induction (epagǀgƝ) is a proceeding from particulars to a universal, and the definition has been conventional ever since. But there is an ambiguity here. Induction in the Scholastic and the (so-called) Humean tradition has presumed that Aristotle meant going from particular statements to universal statements. But the alternate view, namely that Aristotle meant going from particular things to universal ideas, prevailed all through antiquity and then again from the time of Francis Bacon until the mid-nineteenth century. Recent scholarship is so steeped in the first-mentioned tradition that we have virtually forgotten the other. In this essay McCaskey seeks to recover that alternate tradition, a tradition whose leading theoreticians were William Whewell, Francis Bacon, Socrates, and in fact Aristotle himself. The examination is both historical and philosophical. The first part of the essay fills out the history. The latter part examines the most mature of the philosophies in the Socratic tradition, specifically Bacon’s and Whewell’s. After tracing out this tradition, McCaskey shows how this alternate view of induction is indeed employed in science, as exemplified by several instances taken from actual scientific practice. In this manner, McCaskey proposes to us that the Humean problem of induction is merely an artifact of a bad conception of induction and that a return to the Socratic conception might be warranted. (2) The Stoic position is wrong and the Platonic-Aristotelian position is right. (3) The will is engaged in the different passions; indeed the different passions are different expressions of the will. The first two claims, properly understood, are defensible. But the most plausible versions of them give us good reason to doubt the third claim. 1. A full exploration of Augustine's reflexions on the nature of the passions would introduce us to some of his central moral and theological concems. I do not intend to undertake this full exploration. I want to discuss his claim about the proper interpretation of the Stoic conception of the passions in relation to the Platonic and Aristotelian view.

    EPICTETUS AS SOCRATIC MENTOR1 In Tom Wolfe's most recent novel, A Man In Full, a young Californian, down on his luck, converts a macho sixty-year old tycoon, facing financial ruin, to Stoicism.2 The young man, Conrad, has miraculously escaped from the Santa Rita gaol as a result of an earthquake. Shortly before, he had discovered Epictetus in a book called The Stoics, a book he had been sent mistakenly in place of a riveting thriller by his favourite author with the title, The Stoics' Game. He rapidly comes across this passage: T [Zeus] gave you a portion of our divinity, a spark from our own fire, the power to act and not to act, the will to get and the will to avoid. If you pay heed to this, you will not groan, you will blame no man, you will flatter none' (p. 398). Conrad is hooked. An innocent among a bunch of hideous felons, he asks himself: 'What would Epictetus have done with this bunch? What could he have done? How could you apply his lessons two thousand years later, in this grimy gray pod, this pigsty full of beasts who grunted about mother-fuckin this and mother-fuckin that?' (p. 410). Conrad memorises chunks of Epictetus. He refers a series of challenges to Zeus, overcomes a thug twice his size, and radiates Stoic strength. At the end, hired as a male nurse in Atlanta for the massive but now ailing Croker, the about-to-be ruined tycoon, Conrad tells Croker about the Stoic Zeus and Epictetus.
