It’s never easy putting a newsletter together and some editions are harder than others. Chasing people who have no idea of what a deadline is, is part of the job, not a joyful one, but unfortunately it seems it goes with the territory. When a newsletter is complete and I have a flick through, I think to myself ‘that looks pretty good’. I’m happy, but that’s just me. What do the members think! That is the question. This is the members’ newsletter, it doesn’t purport to be a magazine, It is a newsletter for an equestrian sport. That being said, it has been suggested by members of the SMC that it’s in need of a change in format, a facelift perhaps. Some suggestions include: remove the ride results; remove the minutes; (you can find both on the web); get some more colour pages (this of course would come at considerable cost), get more stories on juniors, articles on nutrition, training etc. Increase the price, charge for internet access. Oh, and get more advertisers. So dear members and readers, what would you like to see? Do you want change and if so, what would you like to see changed. Please consider writing a ‘Letter to the Editor’ with your suggestions and criticisms. Criticism is always welcome so long as it is constructive. Letters to the Editor would probably be best as that way everyone who reads the newsletter, will see what is being suggested. Alternatively write an email to the current editor, Helen Rich at: [email protected] or email John Howe who is the current newsletter portfolio holder. John’s email address is: [email protected].

Shakari Bear decade team

SHAKARI BEAR……what a wonderful time we have had together so far and now a Decade Team!!!!! With our success at the recent Tooraweenah ride, Bear and I have been competing for ten years and it’s hard to believe that fourteen and a half years ago Bear, her mum Shamara and I fell asleep together in the top stable waiting for the vet to arrive after Shamara had retained the afterbirth.

Of course Bear was always going to be an endurance horse with her granddam Shaboom, my first endurance horse, mum Shamara being successful too until an accident forced her retirement. Bear’s sire Polar Bear was the sire of my other endurance horses Shakista (Kissie), PPP Kool Pashin (Pashi) and Shalacey Bear (Lacey) as well as Kadie and so it began. Bear has always been so easy to be with and loves going away, looks after me every step of the way, not much worries her and loves being “the special one”.

With over 6,500 kms in competition including four Shahzada buckles, a Manilla Muster marathon, 3rd LW at the 2018 State Championships and so many 80 and 100km rides resulting in State and National pointscore wins over those ten years, we have heaps more goals to achieve and lots more fun along the way. A couple of favourite photos thanks to Animal Focus.. Photos from the top: Bear and Shamara Bear at Windeyer Bear at Tooraweenah

Please be nice to your vet

We are all encouraged to ensure our horses are used to the minor handling for TPR and the vet ring. The British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) has sponsored an excellent series of videos to help with getting horses used to this. There are topics such as ‘worry free worming’ which also applies to that electrolyte paste your horse may need. Gemma Pearson steers watchers through several processes, and her timing is immaculate. Key take homes are to start handling the horse in a less threatening spot (eg for handling heads) and to release pressure really quickly. The videos are on You Tube under ‘Don’t break your vet!’ available here : https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZLor1KlzkI9X1UpvbOxwllS1BNoLvcmR Sarah Pollard Williams

Saturday 22nd May 2021 5km : 10km : 20km : 40km

We've been burnt, flooded and locked down, but we are back! Come and celebrate with the Wingello community at our 12th annual endurance event. The Wingello State Forest is still closed to the public as clean-up and restoration work following the January 2020 bushfire continues. We are so very grateful to the NSW Forestry Corporation, which has agreed to cease operations for a day so we can run an event! We have access to the forest for one day – Saturday 22nd May 2021, and will be running ride distances of 5km, 10km, 20km and 40km. We are not able to run an 80km ride this year … but our bonfire will be bigger and better than ever (no pre-dawn start for anyone), and our favourite muso, Dave Newman, is returning for a groovy night under the stars (weather has been booked in – lol). The Wingello Village Store will be setting up their regular canteen with burgers, rolls and the like, and we are introducing an exciting new caterer to the team – Flavours by Dee. Dee is a professional chef with a passion for flavour – blending Asian spice and fresh herbs with Western cuisine.

The Ride Base is available for camping on Friday and Saturday nights. The office and vetting will open at 10am on Saturday, and rides will start from 12 noon. Vetting is AERA with optional early present. Head Vet is Karim Kooros. Chief Steward is Haydn Fisher. Dogs are welcome but must be kept chained or on a leash at all times. Some important notes:  We cannot design the course until a couple of weeks before the event, so distances are subject to minor change depending on forest conditions at this time. Any changes will be advertised on our website and social media platforms and emailed to those who have registered. All entries can be transferred if you change your mind about the distance you would like to ride.  The forest is not open to riders outside of the official event. All warm-up riding will be restricted to the Ride Base. There must be no riding off the marked course. This is a safety issue and a condition of our Permit for this year.

 We will not be providing firewood for private fires, and you cannot collect this from the Ride Base or forest. Please contact the ride organiser several weeks in advance of the event if you would like to make a special arrangement for firewood. Entries: Entries are to be booked and pre-paid through Try Booking: www.trybooking.com/BPSND. Please print your

ticket at the end of the booking process – this will be your ride entry form. Complete the additional details on the form, sign the relevant declarations, and bring it to the event with you. Remember to bring a Horse Health Declaration for each horse. Online entries will close at 9pm on Monday 17th May. Late entries will be accepted at the ride base, with a $35 late fee per entry. Entries are transferable. The refund policy is on the website. You can purchase ride merchandise (polo shirts, mugs) through the Try Booking link for postal delivery before the event or collection at the event. If you have a problem with internet access or do not have a credit card, please contact the Ride Organiser to make alternate arrangements for direct deposit or cheque payment. A full program of events, with entry forms, course descriptions, catering menus, local area information, sponsor details etc., is provided on the website www.highlandsendurance.com. You can also stay up to date with ride details, track and weather conditions and sponsors through the Facebook page www.facebook.com/ wingelloforestenduranceride. Directions to the base will be signposted from the Hume Highway. The ride base will open at 12 noon on Friday 21st May and close at 12 noon on Sunday 23rd May. Watagan Endurance Ride Watagan Mountains Endurance

7th and 8th August 2021 – 40/80km rides

Come and join us in the stunning Watagan Mountains for a weekend not to be missed. We will be running a 40km and 80km ride on Sunday 8th August (other distances still to be confirmed). Horses will require a reasonable level of fitness as the ride starts with a 3km climb up into the mountains and includes a number of undulating tracks. There are some short rough patches, but all the tracks are 4wd accessible. All legs include out and back tracks with turnaround points so expect some two-way horse traffic. There is only 2km of tar at the start and end of the ride, on wide country roads with a good verge. The rest of the tracks traverse scenic national park and state forest trails.

The Course:  40km Ride - A 40km training ride (and leg 2 of our 80km ride) that is ideal for novice horses and riders to step up and challenge themselves. This ride starts with a decent climb up the mountain and then follows undulating tracks through the National Park and out to a beautiful lookout overlooking the Hunter Valley. Be sure to take your time and enjoy the views along the way.  80km Ride - Leg 1 of this ride will take you up and across the Watagan mountains. Once you climb up into the Watagans the track is gently undulating along the top. You will ride along forestry tracks to Heaton’s Lookout, taking in amazing views to the coast (even in the dark!) from Newcastle right across Lake Macquarie and down the Central Coast. Leg 2 of the 80km is the same as the 40km training ride (described above). Ride Base: We have a beautiful ride base at 166 Mill Lane, Quorrobolong on the quieter, Hunter Valley side of the mountains. There is good access for big rigs.

Fires are allowed (subject to Fire Ratings on the day) but must be in a contained pit or drum.

Horse water will be provided but you should bring your own human drinking water.

BYO cups for water on track. Checkpoints will have water available but will not be providing cups due to COVID restrictions.

Canteen: There will be a canteen available Saturday (lunch) and Sunday (breakfast and lunch). Dinner on Saturday night can be purchased directly from the local pizza place and delivered. Pizza Inn Cessnock (02) 4990 2351.

SHAHZADA Monday, 23RD to Friday, 27TH August, 2021 ……. our 40th Anniversary

Shahzada 2021 will be from Monday, 23rd August to Friday, 27th August with the Mini Marathon from Tuesday, 24th to Thursday, 26th August. We are well into the year now so make sure that you get to as many rides as possible and that you and your horse are qualified to enter when entries open closer to the event – this is the year you have to be there, whether Shahzada or the Mini Marathon is your goal, with our huge anniversary celebrations. Please check the rule book on the NSW ERA website for qualifications for horses and riders for Marathon and Mini Marathon rides. With our March Track Clearing postponed due to the floods, a few of us walked up The Steps at Easter to the top road access and marked the track for the RFS who have kindly offered to hold their chainsaw re-accreditation courses there so by August it will be better than ever. Jennifer Gilbertson tells us that “The Steps trail was discovered by Paul Grieves – he was out riding in the late afternoon and lost his way, it became dark and he decided to follow his dog Jess home.”

The Steps

Such an important track for those doing Shahzada as we go down The Steps on Thursday morning and up in the last leg on Friday. Thanks to Robert McKenzie, here is a photo of Paul Grieves and Gilgalad at Shahzada in 1984 – Paul achieved 14 buckles and Gilgalad achieved 10.

Mogendoura ride review

In a terrific show of sportsmanship, riders Monica Ballard and Tracy-Lee Cossor held hands to be equal first across the line at the inaugural Mogendoura ride. Riding Birrali Lawrence and Future Dream Savannah respectively, the Lightweight division riders completed the challenging course in a time of 6hrs 27 mins, with FD Savannah was awarded Best Conditioned. Following closely behind, Middleweight rider Ian Curtis riding Blake’s Heaven Summer Wind finished just three minutes later. Run from Mogendoura Farm, just outside of Moruya on the NSW South Coast, 109 riders across four distances – 5, 20, 40 and 80 kilometres – fronted up to the hilly Wandera State Forest trails on the 6th and 7th of March. The 80km ride was the first NSW endurance ride for 2021 with 32 entrants, including four junior riders whose entries fees were generously sponsored by Canobolos Endurance Riders and the Matar Stables Bullio Cup. Mild weather conditions and judicious riding by competitors warned not to underestimate the course resulted in just four horses vetting out in the main ride, with similarly excellent completion numbers in the shorter distances. Rob Catlin rode a tactical ride on Valinor Park Madrass to win the Heavyweight division in 7hrs10 and also took Best Conditioned . He rode with partner Clare Feary on Equilo who was second Middleweight and Best Conditioned. In the Junior division Mady Hooper on Currowan Apollo took out first place in 7hr 58mins, with third place going to Scarlet Galvin on Future Dreams Amelia (8hr22min) taking out Best Conditioned. Despite a couple of falls on track, host club Trailblazers Tomfoolery were thrilled with the way riders managed their horses and look forward to welcoming competitors again.

Tumbarumba Endurance Ride

3rd and 4th April, Tumbarumba Endurance Riders for giving their time in helping all this come Club welcomed 142 riders and crew/family back to together. Cheers, RO’s Tumbarumba for the Easter long weekend! Erin Gadsby, Tracy John Wowsers this was our first ride this committee has hosted and the first endurance event back in Tumbarumba after a decade and what a wonderful but very busy weekend!

The fake summer turned up so although we didn’t have many vet outs for lameness we did have a few with higher heart rates. Everyone managed their horse really well with what was termed as an old school challenging endurance track by our chief steward.

From feedback we have heard everyone seemed to enjoy the tracks and with views many comments on the awesome track clearing and mowing of edges. We were also complimented on the great track marking, the water troughs that kept on being topped up and the friendly check point people for which we can thank Wagga Amateur Radio club for their professionalism.

Ride base was a hit especially the showers—we had many a comment on those!! The canteen was appreciated as well for being open all hours providing warm drinks in the chilly morning and cold drinks during the day. Ian Curtis 1st Middle Weight So YES you will most likely see us run this event Blake’s Heaven Summer Wind 5hrs 36min again next year. We have learnt a lot and taken on Sharyn Coultson 2nd Middleweight and BC, board feedback we have received to help things Castlebar Roulette run more smoothly. The Western Australian Endurance Riders Association season for 2021 is underway with 17 rides in total planned for the year. One particular ride will be the standout. The Tom Quilty ride returns to the West and with it the aspirations of many riders to attain maybe their once in a lifetime Quilty buckle. Over the Easter weekend the 240 km marathon ride was held from the Collie Racetrack, the 24th running of the popular event. Over three consecutive days a gritty bunch of 9 riders rode 80 km a day, their days starting at 4am in moonlight with still and very humid conditions which at times were very challenging. It was a wonderful testament of horsemanship that saw 6 complete the course and successfully pass the stringent vet check on Easter Sunday. Three elated first timers were among those who completed the course. I spoke to Hannah Roscoe one of those riders about her endurance journey so far. ‘’I travelled from England in 2000 and spent four months in the Northern Territory as a jillaroo. I classed that as my life time horsey experience. Remaining in , 10 years later, I bought an Arabian gelding, Mariba Shazam (aka Monty). I then joined WAERA and haven’t looked back. Every single person I have spoken to (anyone who knows me, knows that would be quite a lot!) and even those I haven’t, have helped me along the way. Valinor Park Arabians

“Beauty that endures “ Helen Rutland of Valinor Park has been breeding exceptional horses for endurance, show and performance for over 40 years and definitely lives up to her motto “beauty that endures”. Question 1 What year was the Stud first established?

The stud was established in 1979.

Question 2 What made you go into breeding your own horses?

Having commenced competing in endurance in the 70's with a Thoroughbred, it soon became apparent that Arabians were more suited to endurance. The first purchase was an Anglo mare, that unfortunately didn't prove suitable for endurance so was sent to stud, and the stallion chosen came to Valinor Park.

Question 3 What was your foundation breeding stock / bloodlines? Foundation stallion, Oasis Desert Song +S

working out for Fittest Horse, Quilty 1982. The stallion Oasis Desert Song was the foundation stallion, and when he was chosen it was more good luck than anything else. Mare lines were chosen to compliment his bloodlines, and all had successful performance lines in their pedigrees, even though their sire lines were Ralvon Pilgrim, the mares lines all went back to successful Quilty horses.

Question 4

What was your aim when starting Valinor Park? To breed Arabians that could not only compete at the highest levels of endurance, but who could also be successful in the show arena, halter, dressage and performance, hence the motto, 'Beauty that Endures'

Question 5 What has been some of your biggest achievements as a breeder?

Over the years there have been many achievements - from watching my children gain Shahzada buckles on homebred horses, to the wins overseas and locally, on Valinor Park bred horses, to also seeing the joy that owners gain when they successfully complete a ride. Then there is also the success of knowing that an East Coast Champion Halter horse can also be successful in endurance.

Question 6 Helen and Balfron Marbella, Quilty Lwt winner 1982 and What do you look for in a potential stallion / 1983.. mare to breed endurance horses?

NSW Endurance News May June 2021 Page No. 49

First and foremost any horse which is to be a breeding horse must possess Arabian characteristics consistent with the breed standard. This is essential because those characteristics are what has made the Arabian so successful in the desert. As well as that, it is essential that horses have the right confirmation, have good clean legs and move properly. Temperament and courage are integral, and any breeding horse must have good heart rates.

Question 7 Being involved in endurance since the 80s, what’s been the biggest change you have seen over the years in the sport?

Without question the quality of the horses competing has improved to a huge extent. When Oasis Desert Song started in the early 80's there were very few purebreds competing, and horses were generally of mixed quality in the late 70's and early 80's. Purebreds were expensive, and Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds were common, but as the sport developed, so breeding programmes developed and the quality now of the Australian endurance athlete is one of the best in the world. Today, you will often see better Arabians at a Quilty than you may find competing at the highest levels of the halter ring. Question 8 What advice would you give to anyone looking to breed their own endurance horses? Top right: Valinor Park Justice, 1st Junior Shazhada 1992. These are the current TPR’s who have TPR’d from 1/1/17 to 1/6/19. Please remember to retain currency you are required to TPR at one ride per year. A lapsed TPR can be reaccredited by a Chief Steward who will ascertain that the TPR is up to date with AERA rules and is able to take the heart rate and respiration correctly. If the CS is satisfied that the TPR is up to date, the CS will make a note of the TPR’s name in the CS report and mark it passed. Please ensure your name is on the CS Ride Report. Notice Dogs must be restrained at all times. Due to dogs being found running loose in increasing numbers at endurance events, it has been resolved that riders are to be disqualified, if their own dog or a dog belonging to their camp is found not to be restrained at all times during the full duration of an endurance event, i.e. from the opening of the ride base to participants until its closure. All chief stewards have been instructed to take action, enforce this rule and report offenders. A ‘no dogs’ policy may be introduced, if offences against this rule continue to occur. Logbook & Identification Procedures

A horse is a novice for a minimum of 90 days from the date on which it successfully completes its first affiliated endurance ride and may only attempt four rides during this period, ie if a horse successfully completes its first ride on 1st July, it cannot upgrade to endurance status until after 28th September and may only enter four rides during this period. There is no limit on the time it takes to reach endurance status. Your horse can be a novice for as many months (or years) as you like. When your horse has successfully completed 240 kms of affiliated endurance (not training) rides, it can be upgraded from novice (blue log book) to endurance (yellow log book) status. Ensure the brands are clear. If not, have the horse re-branded or microchipped (Refer to rule H5.2(a) - (b) ) and H5.3). Have a vet complete the horse identification form (written description and diagrams) and sign it. Identification and microchipping can be done at most rides, but it is advisable to check with the ride secretary beforehand. Complete the logbook application form and attach I.D. form, novice horse logbook and the appropriate fee. Please allow 10 working days from date of posting for return. It is essential to retain a copy of the I.D. form and perhaps have it laminated for the future. PLEASE NOTE An Endurance Horse Logbook will not be issued unless a signed Veterinary Identification Form is enclosed with the application. The I.D. in the novice log book is NOT acceptable.
