That is precisely what Saps At Sea and Laughing Gravy Tents are doing again next summer. SATURDAY 12th SEPTEMBER Sons can arrive in Southend during the day and enjoy the facilities of our seaside town by themselves – beach, Pier, arcades, bowling, food, shops, pubs and so on and so forth….. At 6pm until midnight at the Clarence Hall in Central Southend enjoy non-stop live entertainment at TWICE TWO SATURDAY . Already booked for this extravaganza:- • Gary & Rob – Laurel and Hardy lookalikes and amazing close-up magic • TAGS – The talented 4 lads with a blend of harmony singing, comedy, music & more • You’re Darn Tootin’ Band – Dave Dearle with his Hot Jazz band and special guest Eileen Ford • Alexander the Great – Southend’s own 10 year old in his tribute to his hero, Oliver Hardy • Vincent Byrne – Birmingham’s young Pianist accompanying Laurel & Hardy on the Big Screen + Sons Entertain + Surprises+ Cold Buffet SUNDAY 13th SEPTEMBER Sons can stay overnight in Southend and on Sunday indulge in all or part of a rather unusual OLLYMPIC SUNDAY. Here we will take to ‘Them Thar Hills’ with a Sunday Morning Walk to the site of the 2012 Olympic Mountain Bike Course at the historic ruins of Hadleigh Castle. There are some great views of Leigh Marshes, the Thames Estuary, Canvey Island and the Kent coast. On our return route we will descend the ‘Music Box Steps’ to Old Leigh. The walk is about 2 miles with some slopes and steps without rushing will take about 2 hours. Back at Old Leigh, for those who may be thirsty and hungry, there are several old pubs or you can return by train to Southend. The afternoon is at your own leisure to do whatever you wish in Old Leigh or Southend. At 5.30pm we have a special RARITIES & FAVOURITES FILM SHOW at the Saps At Sea new venue, the Military & Naval Club, Royal Terrace, which overlooks the Pier. Sons who are making a weekend of their visit are welcome to join us for our September Saps meeting. All Sons of the Desert are cordially invited to join us for all or part of the weekend. This is a relatively cheap weekend and an opportunity to enjoy great entertainment and the company of fellow Sons. I am happy to arrange with information including recommended hotels, B & B’s, travel advice & maps. If you were at the ‘Double Whoopee’ event last year, then you will know what fun awaits you and if you weren’t there then why not join us in Southend for the Sons Fun at the TWICE TWO Weekend. HART William S. Hart came to the movies in 1914 from a long line of theatrical ex perience, mostly Shakespearean and while to many he is the strong, silent Western hero of film he is also the peer of John Ford as a major force in shaping and developing this genre we enjoy, the Western. In 1889 in what is to become Oklahoma Territory the Cherokee Strip is just a graz ing area owned by Indians and worked day and night be the itinerant cowboys called 'tumbleweeds'. Alas, it is the end of the old West as the homesteaders are moving in . Hart becomes involved with a homesteader's daughter and her evil brother who has a scheme to jump the line as "sooners". The scenes of the gigantic land rush is one of the most noted action sequences in film history.

Shot in Central Park, Times Square, the Village, and elsewhere, A BRIDE FOR BRENDA narrates (quite literally – the story is told via female-voiced omniscient narration rather than dialogue) the experiences of NYC-neophyte Brenda as she moves into an apartment with Millie and Jane. These apparently unremarkable roommates soon prove themselves to be flesh-hungry lesbians, spying on Brenda as she undresses, attempting to seduce her, and making her forget all about her paramour Nick (and his partners in masculinity). As the narrator intones, “Once a young girl has been loved by a lesbian, it’s difficult to feel satisfaction from a man again.” –Thurs, Oct 3 at 7:30. TAYLOR MEAD MEMORIAL SCREENING Who didn’t love Taylor Mead? Irrepressible and irreverent, made of silly putty yet always sharp- witted, he was an underground icon in the Lower East Side and around the world. While THE FLOWER THIEF put him on the map, and Andy Warhol lifted him to Superstardom, Taylor truly made his mark in the incredibly vast array of films and videos he made with notables and nobodies alike. A poster child of the beat era, Mead was a scene-stealer who was equally vibrant on screen, on stage, or in a café reading his hilarious, aphoristic poetry.

  • The Little Tramp's Continuing Longevity, Post-1977
E PILOGUE: THE LITTLE TRAMP’S CONTINUING LONGEVITY, POST-1977 If it is still not clear from the preceding chapters that several factions of Americans came together post-1947 to force a re-assessment and even- tual re-invigoration of Charlie Chaplin and his Little Tramp persona in American culture, then the outpouring of love and admiration heaped upon him at his death must solidify this fact. Film critic Andrew Sarris noted in the Village Voice that “we can still say that Charles Chaplin was arguably the single most important artist produced by the cinema, cer- tainly its most extraordinary performer and probably still its most univer- sal icon.” 1 Alden Whitman’s New York Times obituary claimed that “no motion picture actor so captured and enthralled the world as did Charles Spencer Chaplin, a London ragamuffi n who became an immortal artist for his deft and effective humanization of man’s tragicomic confl icts with fate.” 2 And, fi lm critic Stanley Kauffmann wrote in The New Republic : Yes, the Tramp is not a deathless image. Yes, he made us laugh and cry and presumably always will. But, out of the Chaplin moments, put just two together and think of them, and you understand why talking about the Little Fellow is not enough. Think of the moment in The Rink when, with his torso almost motionless, his roller-skated feet move so quickly under him as he tries to keep his balance that his legs almost become a solid blur like the spinning spokes of a wheel. Then think of the last scene in City Lights when the formerly blind girl realizes that this little hobo was her savior, and then the camera goes to his face.

From Gary Logsted: “Brothers, fellow Sons of the Desert: I am thrilled to announce that the Albuquerque Busy Bodies tent (Oasis 29) is planning to present a bid for our 2022 convention at this year’s June gathering. I do believe New Mexico would prove an interesting and fun place to hold the event, and I hope to garner your support.” A special tip of the derby goes to Dean Cartier and his 30 YEARS as our East correspondent. See his last column and Going Bye-Bye! report in Tent News. Please welcome Henry “Butch” Sorenson as the new Eastern reporter. • Laurel and Hardy Filmography
This is a quick ‘n’ easy list of all the films Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy appeared in together. It does not include interview footage and the like where the actors are themselves, rather than in character. Newsreel footage and home movies are also not noted. The years given are the year of (the start of) shooting of the films. All films are in black and white (b&w) unless stated. Running times are in reels for shorts, and minutes for features (five or more reels) — in the latter case these are timed from my own collection, rather than rely on “official” timings which often seem to be inaccurate. The timings are for the longest known version of a film as released — shorter/cut versions also exist in a number of cases. A reel runs about ten minutes. Note that in some early films, despite both Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy being included in the cast, the screen characters played off each other rather than appearing as the “Stan & Ollie” team familiar from later films. In fact, in a couple of these early films, the two actors do not even appear together in the same scene. These films are listed in the first section. The other sections list the familiar “teamed” films. Space does not allow for full cast lists, but I have used the following codes to indicate the returning supporting players that are most familiar to fans: AG = Anita Garvin CH = Charlie Hall MB = Mae Busch AH = Arthur Housman CM = Charles Middleton TS = Tiny Sandford BG = Billy Gilbert EK = Edgar Kennedy TT = Thelma Todd CC = Charley Chase JF = James Finlayson WL = Walter Long Of the (extant) films, all are (or have been) available on DVD or/and Blu-ray except for: NOW I’LL TELL ONE, UNE NUIT EXTRAVAGANTE and THE ROGUE SONG (trailer and most of the non-L&H plot footage).

  • December 2019 Free to Members
2019 December 2019 Free to Members Looking back at previous Laughing Gravy Annuals, it seems I always end my column by thanking Jon Starr for his brilliant artwork which appears on the front cover. So this year I‘m elevating Jon to the top of the page. Jon Starr became a member of our tent in August 2010, and at one of his early tent meetings he brought along some of his artwork (Mandy and I have his Laughing Gravy drawing at the top of our stairs). We asked Jon if he would like to continue Barrie Finney‘s tradition of creating a cartoon drawing of Stan and Ollie for the front cover of the Laughing Gravy Annual. Jon very kindly agreed, and his first Annual cover was in 2010. I was taken aback when I saw it. I never thought anyone could match Barrie, but Jon proved me wrong. Two years later he designed the superb logo for the 33rd UK Convention here in Birmingham in 2012. And if that wasn‘t enough, he is also the lead singer in the band ‗The Pinch‘ who performed at the said convention. I may be biased here, but I think they are the best band I have ever seen at any convention. Every year we try to give Jon a theme (this year being the new film ‗Stan & Ollie‘) and as you can see his artwork is amazing. I love the fact that on the poster Stan looks like Steve Coogan and Ollie looks like John C Reilly. Simply brilliant. Cheers Jon.
