Jean Harlow ~ 20 Films
Jean Harlow ~ 20 Films Harlean Harlow Carpenter - later Jean Harlow - was born in Kansas City, Missouri on 3 March 1911. After being signed by director Howard Hughes, Harlow's first major appearance was in Hell's Angels (1930), followed by a series of critically unsuccessful films, before signing with Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer in 1932. Harlow became a leading lady for MGM, starring in a string of hit films including Red Dust (1932), Dinner At Eight (1933), Reckless (1935) and Suzy (1936). Among her frequent co-stars were William Powell, Spencer Tracy and, in six films, Clark Gable. Harlow's popularity rivalled and soon surpassed that of her MGM colleagues Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer. By the late 1930s she had become one of the biggest movie stars in the world, often nicknamed "The Blonde Bombshell" and "The Platinum Blonde" and popular for her "Laughing Vamp" movie persona. She died of uraemic poisoning on 7 June 1937, at the age of 26, during the filming of Saratoga. The film was completed using doubles and released a little over a month after Harlow's death. In her brief life she married and lost three husbands (two divorces, one suicide) and chalked up 22 feature film credits (plus another 21 short / bit-part non-credits, including Chaplin's City Lights). The American Film Institute (damning with faint praise?) ranked her the 22nd greatest female star in Hollywood history. LIBERTY, BACON GRABBERS and NEW YORK NIGHTS (all 1929) (1) Liberty (2) Bacon Grabbers (3) New York Nights (Harlow left-screen) A lucky few aspiring actresses seem to take the giant step from obscurity to the big time in a single bound - Lauren Bacall may be the best example of that - but for many more the road to recognition and riches is long and grinding. -

Meeting of 23Rd Feb 2013
Jitterbugs Tent meeting February 23rd 2013 I began to get a little worried during the afternoon of the 23rd Feb. Snow was falling and sticking to the ground and I wondered about cancelling. After a few hours, it became apparent that we might have a chance after all and so the trek to RTE was made. We had two apologies from Stephen and Tom, the two stalwarts who rarely miss Tent meetings. As we set up the room, a few members arrived and it looked like we were in for a cosy meeting with Stan and Ollie. Young Harry was keen to show me his Asterix the Gaul books with a number of references to Stan and Ollie and I took some photos of the pages, as I had not seen them before. As we began our first film, “The Music Box”, the door opened and a few more bodies filtered in. A few minutes later and a few more joined us... The room was now a respectable 25ish... The Music Box went down very well and all in attendance were warned to watch carefully as a Jitterbugs quiz was on the cards that night. With the final credits playing, the quiz began and the questions were focused on those with eagle eyes who might have seen something that others did not. So how many times did they do the hat switch routine in total? “Going Bye Bye”, was next to adorn the screen and Walter Long’s performance had us all in stitches... Ollie asking how they could help with Stan offering to “get you a sandwich”, had certain members in fits of laughter and it spread to the rest of the room. -

Send in the Clones
Send in the Clones Chaplin Imitators from Stage to Screen, from Circus to Cartoon Ulrich Ruedel The Chaplin craze of the teens is often cited as one of the main indicators of the unprecedented popularity of Chaplin's little tramp. Chaplin imitators, cartoons, songs were abound. While Chaplin may indeed qualify as the most imitated character in film history, this "sincerest form of flattery" was not limited to him. Indeed, one of the historically most remarkable Chaplin imitations, that of former Chaplin understudy Stan Laurel, was part of a Keystone Trio stage act, which also included likenesses of Mabel Normand and Chester Conklin. Nor does the phenomenon of comic clones end there. Throughout film history, we find carbon copies of then- popular film clowns, sometimes unidentified today, often though probably quite justly forgotten.1 1 The Museum of Modern Art, for example, holds footage of an unidentified Snub Pollard imitator; imitations of Harold Lloyd's glasses character have been reported, and Wolfram Tichy's 1979 Harold Lloyd bioography presents an unidentified photo of what might have been such an imitator. Europe had their own, unique comedy success in the 20s and 30s, in the Danish comedy tramp duo of Fy og Bi / Long and Short / Pat & Patachon, and this author's research into this team (easily rivaling in popularity Chaplin, Keaton and Lloyd in countries like Germany and Russia) has so far confirmed at east four imitators, or "parodists," asppearing well into the 1950s. The Three Stooges are unique in this regard as their likenesses can claim a certain degree of legitimacy, either having gone through the same school as the original trio, Stooge inventor Ted Healy's act, that is, or in a couple instances even having the privilege of featuring former original Stooges. -

CABINET OF CURIOSITIES STAN & OLLIE Hong Kong, China, 20th cent. Moulded synthetic material H 17, 4 x L 10 x W 7 cm / H 17, 5 x C 5 x W 4, 5 cm MAHR2015634 / MAHR2015635 ese two dolls esh out the most famous comic pair in the whole cinema history – Laurel & Hardy or Stan & Ollie – a pair watched and adored everywhere in the world since more than 80 years ago and who became known in Portugal as Bucha e Estica. Although already stablished in the seventh art, the pair became official in 1927, when they featured the silent short lm Putting Pants on Philip. ey featured more than a hundred of comedies, a sort of movie very popular in the years 20 to 40, known as “slapstick” in the anglophile world and as pastelão in Portugal, full of mischiefs, exploring the easy laughter and dubious taste and involving sometimes a certain amount of physical violence. In total, they have appeared together in 106 lms: 40 short sound, 32 short silent and 23 full – length; in the remaining eleven, they had just short participations. eir last movie was Atoll K (Utopia), in 1951. Oen pointed out as “people artists”, Stan Laurel and Olivier Hardy were much more than laugh stimulators and they were revaluated for their historical acknowledgement. In their most sui generis style, with their dreamer side and their physical and clumsy humour, at the end, somehow, they became tragic gures. Curiously , in 2018, it was launched a biographic movie directed by Jon S. Baird, featuring Steve Coogan and John C. -
