STOMP and the junior author. Its description is given below. We should like to express our very cordial thanks to Dr. Norbert STOMP of the National Museum of Natural History in Luxemburg, who made it possible for us to study the soil fauna of his country, and to MrTOM Mario M ASI and Mrs MariaTOMMASI-UR SONE, for collecting most of the material. The chaetotaxy of urotergiteI in Eosentomon species was described in most ofthe earlier papers by the formula 4/10 and the shape of setae by COPELAND’s (1964) formula. It is mostly 3,1,1, which means: 3 normal setae, 1 hair-like seta, 1 small sensilla. Since the time when BERNARD (1975) discovered the presence of the lateral sensilla on urotergite I the two formulas should be 4/12 and 3,1,2, respectively.

TREWICK defining feature of the Hexapoda, as the name suggests, is six legs. Also, the body comprises a head, thorax, and abdomen. The number A of abdominal segments varies, however; there are only six in the Collembola (springtails), 9–12 in the Protura, and 10 in the Diplura, whereas in all other hexapods there are strictly 11. Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000).

  • Insect Egg Size and Shape Evolve with Ecology but Not Developmental Rate Samuel H
ARTICLE https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-019-1302-4 Insect egg size and shape evolve with ecology but not developmental rate Samuel H. Church1,4*, Seth Donoughe1,3,4, Bruno A. S. de Medeiros1 & Cassandra G. Extavour1,2* Over the course of evolution, organism size has diversified markedly. Changes in size are thought to have occurred because of developmental, morphological and/or ecological pressures. To perform phylogenetic tests of the potential effects of these pressures, here we generated a dataset of more than ten thousand descriptions of insect eggs, and combined these with genetic and life-history datasets. We show that, across eight orders of magnitude of variation in egg volume, the relationship between size and shape itself evolves, such that previously predicted global patterns of scaling do not adequately explain the diversity in egg shapes. We show that egg size is not correlated with developmental rate and that, for many insects, egg size is not correlated with adult body size. Instead, we find that the evolution of parasitoidism and aquatic oviposition help to explain the diversification in the size and shape of insect eggs. Our study suggests that where eggs are laid, rather than universal allometric constants, underlies the evolution of insect egg size and shape. Size is a fundamental factor in many biological processes. The size of an 526 families and every currently described extant hexapod order24 organism may affect interactions both with other organisms and with (Fig. 1a and Supplementary Fig. 1). We combined this dataset with the environment1,2, it scales with features of morphology and physi- backbone hexapod phylogenies25,26 that we enriched to include taxa ology3, and larger animals often have higher fitness4.

  • Ecology of Italian Protura
Ecology of Italian Protura Loris Galli1*, Matteo Capurro1, Tony Molyneux2, Carlo Torti1 & Matteo Zinni1 1Dipartimento di Scienze Della Terra, dell’Ambiente e della Vita, Genoa University, Corso Europa 26, I16132, Italy. 2Gungahlin College, Canberra, Australia * Corresponding author. Permanent address: Dipartimento di Scienze Della Terra, dell’Ambiente e della Vita, Genoa University, Corso Europa 26, I16132, Italy. E-mail address: [email protected] Abstract The ecology of Protura in Italy (including Corsica) is tentatively described according to original and bibliographical data. Protura are quite common but very rarely abundant: their mean density in soil samples collected in Liguria (NW Italy) was estimated to be 372 /m² (s.d. 657 – max. 2790 /m² in a Holm oak forest). Information from the analyses of habitat and/or elevation of 3448 specimens from 269 collections and 4071 specimens from 295 collections identified to species and genus level, respectively, enabled us to outline Protura assemblages for eight different macro-habitats. The unbalanced sex ratio in favour of females observed in 12 of the dominant species of Acerentomata suggests that (based also on the sperm types known in Protura) a single male can fertilize several females through spermatophores. For one species (Proturentomon minimum) only females were collected, which may suggest the possibility of parthenogenesis in some Protura. An analysis of the phenology and population dynamics of the five dominant species, showed annual cycles with one (Acerentomon microrhinus) or more (A. gallicum, A. italicum, A. maius and Eosentomon transitorium) peaks of reproductive activity. Other ecological remarks (e.g. about the relationship between the amplitude of latitudinal/altitudinal distribution and the ecological distribution of Protura in Italy) are discussed.

S O I L O R G A N I S M S Volume 83 (3) 2011 pp. 309–334 ISSN: 1864-6417 100 years of research on the Protura: many secrets still retained Günther Pass1, 3 and Nikolaus Urban Szucsich1,2 1 Department of Evolutionary Biology, University of Vienna, Althanstraße 14, A-1090, Vienna, Austria 2 Department of Entomology, Biocenter Grindel and Zoological Museum, University of Hamburg, Martin-Luther-King-Platz 3, D-20146, Hamburg, Germany 3 Corresponding author: Günther Pass (e-mail: [email protected]) Abstract The Protura were discovered relatively late in the history of entomology. The first description of these minute soil arthropods was given in 1907 by the Italian entomologist Filippo Silvestri, who named them ‘Protura’. Shortly thereafter his fellow countryman Antonio Berlese published two brief notes on these animals before his grand monograph of the ‘Myrientomata’, as he named them, appeared in 1909. The centennial of the discovery of Protura offers the opportunity to review our knowledge about these peculiar animals. In the end, we must confess that proturans continue to retain an amazing number of secrets, including basic facts of knowledge about their biology and ecology. Up to the present, they have concealed from scientific observation their sexual life and the mode of sperm transmission. For a long time, their egg deposition and early development were completely obscure topics; only recently has it become possible to conduct first observations on their embryology. The list of open questions can be easily extended: we know only little about their nutritional biology, and next to nothing about their sensory systems, communication, physiological and ecological capacities.

EOSENTOMON PINKYAE N. SP. ABSTRACT Eosentomon pinkyae n. sp. (Protura: Eosentomidae) from Zaragoza (Spain). Eosentomon pinkyae n. sp. is described from Pyrenean oak forest soil in Moncayo moun- tain (Zaragoza, Spain). This species belongs to the species group of E. delicatum Gisin, 1945 (anterior and posterior additional head setae present). It differs from all species of this group in dorsal chaetotaxy of abdominal tergites V-VII, which have 10, 10, 4-6 ante- rior setae respectively. Eosentomon palustre sp. n. of delicatum group is described from the Potoczek reserve near Kêpice, Northern Poland (UTM XA 20). It differs from similar species in a short female squama genitalis with relatively small head and in the seta P1a situated nearly at the level of seta P2. The new species is associated with swampy habitats. A list of Protura collected together with it in such habitats is given. Key words: entomology, taxonomy, Protura, Eosentomon, new species, Poland, peatbogs Eosentomon palustre sp. n. (figs 1-23) DIAGNOSIS Eosentomon palustre sp. n. belongs to the delicatum species group sensu SZEPTYCKI (1985) with relatively thin foretarsal sensillum c situated distally to α the base of seta 6. This group includes E. delicatum GISIN, 1945, carpaticum SZEPTYCKI, 1985, wanda SZEPTYCKI, 1985, ulinense SZEPTYCKI, 1999 and zodion SZEPTYCKI, 1985 (SZEPTYCKI 1985, 1999). Besides the evident differences in the shape of female squama genitalis, the species differ in the position of foretarsal sensilla t1 and a, position of seta P1a on urotergite VII and some details of abdominal chaetotaxy (though the latter details are to some degree variable). The foretarsus is most similar to ulinense and zodion.
