Grade Summer Reading Requirement 2014 Platt and Maloney High Schools 9th Grade Summer Reading Requirement 2014 Due Date – All projects are due on the first day of school All incoming 9th grade students and those repeating freshman English MUST complete the attached packet and bring it on the first day of high school . In this packet you will find the Mythology Webquest and the Novel of Your Choice Project. The 9 th grade English class you have signed up for decides which project you must do. You will be required to create a scrapbook page for each of the fourteen (14) gods and goddesses. Olympian Soundtrack- This project is intended for the music lovers. For each of the fourteen (14) gods and goddesses, you must select a song that accurately represents the character and provide a brief explanation of why you chose each song. Movie Review- This intended for the film lovers. Write a movie review based on Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief . CHECKLIST The lyrics must match the power of the god and MUST BE APPROPRIATE FOR SCHOOL! Research each god/goddess to gain further knowledge of their personalities, powers, and domain (what they are in charge of). Pick a song in which the lyrics relate to the god/goddess you have chosen. Find the songs in audio form and download/burn to a CD. Write a brief explanation for each song, explaining why each song was chosen to represent the given god/goddess. *If you choose to create an actual CD booklet, instead of typing it on computer paper, you may. Example: Eros Song Title: Can't Help Falling In Love Explanation: This song relates to Eros because he is the god of love and desire. He causes people to fall in love by shooting arrows at them. He even did this to himself once. If someone is shot they "can't help falling in love" because once Eros' arrows stick, love is unavoidable. It is like a love spell. SCRAPBOOK PROJECT OVERVIEW This project is intended for the creative student and is the Mythology Webquest in scrapbook form. Morris recounts the autobiographical memoir of his childhood in Yazoo City, Mississippi and the four-legged friend that accompanied him on his journey into manhood. Set in the backdrop of the war-torn world of the 1940’s, young Willie (Frankie Muniz) is on the verge of his ninth birthday. His only real friend, neighbor and high school sports hero Dink Jenkins (Luke Wilson) goes off and fight in WWII, leaving Willie feeling alone in the world. To lift Willie’s spirits, his mother (Diane Lane) decides to defy the wishes of his stern father (Kevin Bacon) and buy Willie a Jack Russell terrier puppy.

Wise, 1971), The Poseidon Adventure (dir. Neame, 1972), Black Narcissus (dir. Powell, 1947) – or else recreate episodes from classical mythology. Jon Solomon estimates that there have been over eighty mythological movies made by American and European film studios to date, proving that movie producers are keen to mine the depths of classical myth for screen materials (Solomon 2001:101). The release of films like Disney’s animated feature Hercules (dir. Clements and Musker, 1997) and the blockbuster Troy (dir. Petersen, 2004) demonstrates that Greek mythology continues to play a significant role in the construction of ancient history in mass popular culture. As Martin Winkler puts it: Ancient myths and archetypes recurring in films attest to the vitality of our own cultural tradition. Retellings of classical stories on film show that filmmakers have used the ancient material consciously in order to comment on their own times or that they unconsciously reflect cultural trends.

    Hesiod (8th or 7th c. BC, composed in Greek) The Homeric epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, are probably slightly earlier than Hesiod’s two surviving poems, the Works and Days and the Theogony. Yet in many ways Hesiod is the more important author for the study of Greek mythology. While Homer treats cer- tain aspects of the saga of the Trojan War, he makes no attempt at treating myth more generally. He often includes short digressions and tantalizes us with hints of a broader tra- dition, but much of this remains obscure. Hesiod, by contrast, sought in his Theogony to give a connected account of the creation of the universe. For the study of myth he is im- portant precisely because his is the oldest surviving attempt to treat systematically the mythical tradition from the first gods down to the great heroes. Also unlike the legendary Homer, Hesiod is for us an historical figure and a real per- sonality. His Works and Days contains a great deal of autobiographical information, in- cluding his birthplace (Ascra in Boiotia), where his father had come from (Cyme in Asia Minor), and the name of his brother (Perses), with whom he had a dispute that was the inspiration for composing the Works and Days. His exact date cannot be determined with precision, but there is general agreement that he lived in the 8th century or perhaps the early 7th century BC. His life, therefore, was approximately contemporaneous with the beginning of alphabetic writing in the Greek world. Although we do not know whether Hesiod himself employed this new invention in composing his poems, we can be certain that it was soon used to record and pass them on.

He named the Earth Gaia and the sky Uranus. Eros then made them fall in love. More… They had many children; among them were giants and Titans, one of which was name Atlas, who, due to his bad behavior was punished to forever hold the Earth and the sky apart. Two other children were named Cronus and Rhea, who married and ruled the world. They also had children. One was name Demeter, who was the Goddess of all things that grow. Hera was the Goddess of marriage and the birth of children. Hestia, as the goddess of the home and sacred hearth. Poseidon, god of the sea, Hades, god of the dead, and Zeus who became the God of the world and ruled the air and the sky. Before they were born, the universe prophesied that one of these children would overtake Cronus and rule the world. To avoid this fate, Cronus swallowed up each of his children as soon as they were born. All of them, except Zeus, who had been hidden by his mother Rhea. When he was fully grown, Zeus conquered Cronus in a great war and rescued his siblings.

    POSEIDON and HADES: UNCONSCIOUS and UNDERWORLD Gods of the Deep We can no longer deny that the dark stirrings of the unconscious are active powers and that psychic forces exist which cannot be fitted into rational order. The layman can hardly conceive how much his inclinations, moods and decisions are influences by the dark forces of his psyche, and how dangerous or helpful they may be in shaping his destiny.1 - Carl Jung Poseidon and Hades are brothers, sons of Cronus and Rhea, devoured by their fearful father and then released to battle and overthrow him. Hades is the lord of the underworld while his brother Poseidon rules the vast domain of the sea. Both spheres are symbolic of the worlds below consciousness and therefore both gods are daimons of the unconscious representing powerful hidden archetypal forces. Both brothers rule a vast expanse of the world but most of the inhabitants of their world are shadow images of the humans dwelling aboveground. Hades population is filled with shades and ghosts while Poseidon’s realm is populated with monsters and shape-shifting prophets. As brothers and custodians of these places they are united in their rulership of the unconscious realms. Once the Titans had been defeated it is the three brothers who divide the resources and inheritance amongst themselves. They drew lots as to who would inherit the various spheres. It is not chance, but the hand of fate that oversees the choice of their dominions. Poseidon, speaking through the voice of the poet Homer in the Iliad tells us how this was accomplished: Since we are three brothers born by Rheia to Kronos, Zeus, and I, and the third is Hades, lord of the dead men.
