Hence, the collective memory is elevated to the standard of national myth and most often expressed in the master narrative. I may refer here to Michael Robinson’s observation that “the state constructs and maintains a ‘master narrative’ of nation which acts as an official ‘story of the nation’. This master narrative legitimates the existence of the state and nation internally; it is also projected externally, to legitimate a nations’ existence in the world community”.1 But in as much as memory is selective, so also is the state-sanctioned official narrative, and it has become commonplace that changes in the political order enhance and result in ideologically motivated re-writing of that history in spite of its claims at objectivity and truth. The study of the contemporary formation of Taiwan history and its historiography is no exception. In fact, the current activity in rewriting the history is compounded by an additional element, and one which is crucial to understanding the complexity of the issue. What makes Taiwanese historiography as a separate entity interesting, intriguing and complex is that the master-narrative is treated as a part of and embedded in Chinese history, and at the same time conditioned by the transition from a perceived to a real pressure from a larger nation, China, that lays claim on its territory, ethnicity, and past. -

In particular, its antagonistic, cross-strait relationship with China has led to various negative consequences and cast a spotlight on the country on the international diplomatic front for close to over six decades. After the end of the Cold War, the democratization of Taiwan altered her political identity and released a nation-building process that was seemingly irreversible. Taiwan’s nation-building efforts have moved the nation further away from reunification with China. -

Imaginary War With China: Is The 1992 Consensus an Essential Element in Promoting Peace Across Taiwan Strait? Ching-Hsin Yu,* Ching-Hsing Wang,† and Dennis Lu-Chung Weng‡ Abstract This study aims to examine the relationship between individuals’ attitudes toward the 1992 consensus and their support for Taiwan in the name of the Republic of China (R.O.C) without declaring independence. Given President Tsai Ing-wen’s refusal to recognize the existence of the 1992 consensus that provides the basis for dialogue between Taiwan and China, there is a pressing need to understand the role of the 1992 consensus in Taiwanese people’s support for Taiwan under the R.O.C constitutional framework. By using data from the 2017 Taiwan National Security Survey, this study finds that people with higher levels of support for the 1992 consensus are more likely to support Taiwan in the name of the R.O.C without declaring independence. This implies that from the public’s perspective, the acknowledgement of the 1992 consensus is a required condition to maintain the status quo for Taiwan. Consequently, President Tsai and her administration might need to rethink about their policy of denying the existence of the 1992 consensus. Preface Technology Education at both elementary and secondary schools levels has become an important means to develop citizens' technological literacy for all worldwide. In Taiwan, Living Technology is also necessary to be energetically offered at both elementary and secondary school levels in order to improve technological literacy of the public. The Selection Process of National Park Landscape Areas and the Imaginative Geographies in Taiwan During the Japanese Colonial Period
ACADEMIC WORLD of Tourism Studies vol.1 The Selection Process of National Park Landscape Areas and the Imaginative geographies in Taiwan during the Japanese Colonial Period Koji KANDA This paper discusses the relationship between the selection process of national park landscapes and the imaginative geographies in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period, focusing on the ambivalent and contradictory nature of modern spatiality. In 1937, three national parks were designated in Taiwan by the Taiwan Colonial Government: the The Tatun National Park, The Tsugitaka- Taroko National Park and The Niitaka-Ali Mountains National Park. In this selection, criteria used in choosing national parks in mainland Japan were directly applied to those in Taiwan, which was characterized by mountain landscapes; selecting the natural and majestic landscapes symbolising the great Japanese Empire was considered to flaunt Japanese superiority and attract tourists from all over the world. The selection was met with opposition that asserted distinctive characteristics of Taiwan in the tropical landscapes, which was also rare and thus attractive as a tourist site. Such opposition was however denied as suitability to the Japanese standard, benefits to health and wellbeing of the Japanese residents, and proximity to Taipei City were more of the priority, and furthermore, tourism potential was considered inappropriate in selecting national parks. The paper shows, in the dynamic process of the production of space for national parks in the colonial Taiwan, that the selection of Taiwanese national parks was related to the identity politics of spatial scale between Taiwan and Japan, and that the relations between nationalism and tourism were not always harmonious. -

What Can We Learn from Taiwanese Teachers about Teaching Controversial Public Issues Yu-Han Hung ([email protected]) Michigan State University, Curriculum and Instruction, Teacher Education (CITE) __________________________________________________________________________________ Abstract: This study explores how history teachers in Taiwan make curricular decisions while engaging controversial public issues. The main political controversies discussed in Taiwanese society center on the relationship between Taiwan and the People’s Republic of China. This study documents how four social studies teachers formulate their curricular decisions through the intersecting lenses of professional knowledge and personal beliefs. Findings illuminate the role of personal experience and belief in teacher’s curricular-instructional gate keeping in socially divisive contexts. In sum, this study helps us understand the relationship between a teacher’s own imaginative worldview, sense of personal and professional identity and their classroom teaching practices. Key words: history curriculum, teacher knowledge, curricular-instructional gatekeeper, controversial public issues, Taiwan and the PRC __________________________________________________________________________________ As someone who has grown up, been educated, and taught high school social studies in Taiwan, I have known the controversy that envelopes that island my whole life. Now, teaching and doing research in the United States, my view is different. I have noticed that people outside of Taiwan tend to have a limited understanding of Taiwan’s relationship with the the People’s Republic of China (PRC). In contrast, for my family, friends and colleagues still living in Taiwan, the relationship with the People’s Republic of China is not only a major political issue, but a daily reality that affects almost every major aspect of their life. -

The Ryukyuanist A Newsletter on Ryukyu/Okinawa Studies No. 67 Spring 2005 This issue offers further comments on Hosei University’s International Japan-Studies and the role of Ryukyu/Okinawa in it. (For a back story of this genre of Japanese studies, see The Ryukyuanist No. 65.) We then celebrate Professor Robert Garfias’s achievements in ethnomusicology, for which he was honored with the Japanese government’s Order of the Rising Sun. Lastly, Publications XLVIII Hosei University’s Kokusai Nihongaku (International Japan-Studies) and the Ryukyu/Okinawa Factor “Meta science” of Japanese studies, according to the Hosei usage of the term, means studies of non- Japanese scholars’ studies of Japan. The need for such endeavors stems from a shared realization that studies of Japan by Japanese scholars paying little attention to foreign studies of Japan have produced wrong images of “Japan” and “the Japanese” such as ethno-cultural homogeneity of the Japanese inhabiting a certain immutable space since times immemorial. New images now in formation at Hosei emphasize Japan’s historical “internationality” (kokusaisei), ethno-cultural and regional diversity, fungible boundaries, and demographic changes. In addition to the internally diverse Yamato Japanese, there are Ainu and Ryukyuans/Okinawans with their own distinctive cultures. Terms like “Japan” and “the Japanese” have to be inclusive enough to accommodate the evolution of such diversities over time and space. Despite their close economic relationship since 1965, their conflicting historic and political relationships and deep-seated prejudice against each other have continued. The Korean government’s official ban on the direct import of Japanese cultural products existed until 1997, but various kinds of Japanese cultural products, including popular music, found their way into Korea through various legal and illegal routes and influenced contemporary Korean popular culture. Since 1998, under Korea’s Open- Door Policy, legally available Japanese popular cultural products became widely consumed, especially among young Koreans fascinated by Japan’s quintessentially postmodern popular culture, despite lingering resentments towards Japan. -
