    Sermon preached by Rev’d Glenn Maytum MID LENT MOTHERING SUNDAY, 22nd March, 2020. Did you know last Friday was “World Happiness Day”? It may have slipped past you, unnoticed. The timing of that day is interesting, to me, because the Sundays in Lent and Advent have never been regarded as fasting days and Mid Lent and Mid Advent were, from the earliest times, celebrated with a sense of light- heartedness. Welcome to Laetare Sunday. This is the fourth Sunday of Lent, mid-Lent, and the name comes from Isaiah 66:10, where we read “O be joyful Jerusalem” (in Latin, “Laetare, Jerusalem”). You will find in many places the priest will wear rose coloured vestments. The change of colour from severe Purple to brighter Rose provides encouragement to continue our spiritual journey through Lent. This Sunday is also known as Refreshment Sunday or, especially in England, Mothering Sunday. It is a day of relaxation from normal Lenten disciplines and a day of hope as we look towards Easter. Mothering Sunday began as an explicitly religious event in the 16th century, with no connection to “mothers”, at all. The word ‘mothering’ referred to the “mother church”, the main church or cathedral of the region. It became the tradition that, on the fourth Sunday of Lent, people would return to their mother church for a special service. From this, the custom grew up in medieval times for children away from home (working as domestics, apprentices, etc) to return to visit their parents and for older servants to be given a special holiday for the same purpose.

    Mothering Sunday Today Mothering Sunday is a popular day when Christians choose to use the occasion to think about all things which concern motherhood. We give thanks for the Church as Mother, the Virgin Mary as the mother of Jesus, we remember that God cares for us like a mother and last but not least we give thanks for our own mothers. Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday in Lent and it is a time of special for thanksgiving. Sunday is the one day of joy in Lent, when flowers abound in all churches and when people are allowed a time off from the penitential season. It is also known as Mid-Lent Sunday, Refreshment Sunday or Laetare Sunday. The Latin name of Laetare, means rejoice. Today we come to see the Fourth Sunday of Advent as a time to relax a little – lighten up – and we use this day to celebrate what the world has come to call ‘Mother’s Day’ – which is a wonderful thing to celebrate of course – we were all born of mothers - and if you are a mother and you have your children around you who share the spirit of the day with you then all is well. But it is not like that for some – we are born of mothers but not everyone has had a blessed mothering experience – for some of us our mothers have sadly died and while we give thanks we miss them – some do not have a good relationship with their children and are estranged from them for one reason or another – and for others sadly, their children have died and today is about holding them on their hearts and memories and trusting that they are with us somehow and we keep their memory alive in our remembering – being grateful for the joy of having them in our lives but sad that they are not here today.

But occasionally, Latin reasserts itself, as it does in the case of Laetare Sunday. Laetare Sunday is the popular name for the Fourth Sunday in Lent. Laetare means "Rejoice" in Latin, and the Introit (entrance antiphon) in both the Traditional Latin Mass and the Novus Ordo is Isaiah 66:10-11, which begins "Laetare, Jerusalem" ("Rejoice, O Jerusalem"). Because the midpoint of Lent is the Thursday of the third week of Lent, Laetare Sunday has traditionally been viewed as a day of celebration, on which the austerity of Lent is briefly lessened. The passage from Isaiah continues, "rejoice with joy, you that have been in sorrow," and on Laetare Sunday, the purple vestments and altar cloths of Lent are set aside, and rose ones are used instead. Flowers, which are normally forbidden during Lent, may be placed on the altar. Laetare Sunday is also known as Rose Sunday or Refreshment Sunday, and it has a counterpart in Advent: Gaudete Sunday, the Third Sunday of Advent, when purple vestments are exchanged for rose ones. The point of both days is to provide us encouragement as we progress toward the end of each respective penitential season.

Their daily study topic was “Who is my neighbour? Islam and Christianity.” What a day to be researching how to speak about Hagar and Sarah who both bore sons to Abraham to whom Judaism and Islam trace their heritage. I think that is probably the subject to be explored in a Lenten series. Today I want to talk about this Sunday in Lent.] The fourth Sunday of Lent is unique; it is a break in an otherwise penitential season. The vestments for this day can be rose, just as they are on the third Sunday in Advent. Today we have flowers instead of greens to adorn the altar. Today is called Laetare Sunday or Rose Sunday or refreshment Sunday, but in the UK the 4th Sunday of Lent is Mothering Sunday. In the secular world this Sunday is a celebration of motherhood. It is synonymous with Mother’s Day in other countries. In Roman times there was a festival held in honour of the mother goddess Cybele. When the Roman Empire and Europe converted to Christianity, this celebration became part of the liturgical calendar as Laetare Sunday. So the 4th Sunday in Lent came to be a time to honour the Virgin Mary and the mother church. In times past young women who had left home would get the day off so that they could return to their family, to their mother.

Second Format: Thursday 22nd at 6:00 PM Parents are asked to complete a form this week to nominate their preferred ceremony. A leaflet will then be prepared for circulation next week to advise of outcomes. For the coming and final week of workshops, parents are asked to read page 24 and assist their children complete page 25. If there are parents who have not been attending to their pages, please go back and read. The advice from Pope Frances is very important. Parents and children should by now be able to recite the Act of Contrition perfectly 2nd Rite of Rec. The 2nd Rite of Reconciliation as been scheduled for Tuesday 27th at 7:00 PM.   • Laetare Sunday Next Week, Is the Fourth Sunday of Lent, Marking the Half-Way Point in the Lenten Season
    Did you know . Laetare Sunday Next week, is the fourth Sunday of Lent, marking the half-way point in the Lenten Season. We know it best as Laetare Sunday. But this Sunday has several other names as well. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, it is called Mothering Sunday named because a person would visit his “mother church”, the church in which he was baptized. It was also so called because servants were released for the day to visit their mothers; others, too, would visit their biological mothers on this day. Often the day was celebrated in much the same way as our Mother’s Day. Several customs developed on this Sunday, including the baking of “mother cakes”, called “simnel cakes” and thus the day came also to be known as Simnel Sunday. Simnel cakes are ornamental and rich cakes like those made at Christmas. Such cakes were stamped with the figure of Christ or the Virgin Mary. While today simnel cakes are often prepared for Easter in Great Britain, the simnel cake is still the most traditional recipe associated with Laetare Sunday. This Sunday also goes by Refection Sunday or Refreshment Sunday, named because of the Scripture reading of Joseph feeding his brothers. And, lastly, it is called Rose Sunday, either because of the golden rose, sent by Popes to Catholic sovereigns or because of the rose-colored vestments permitted to be worn for Mass on this day. Historically, the day was also known as the Sunday of the Five Loaves from the miracle of the loaves and fishes which, before the adoption of the common lectionaries, was the traditional Gospel reading for this Sunday.
