Laetare Sunday With the Fourth Sunday in Lent, we come to the half-way mark of the season, and we exult that Easter draws nigh. The first word of the Introit for this Sunday’s Mass gives the day its name and sets the mood: Laetare! “Rejoice ye with Jerusalem; and be ye glad for her.” On this day, as on Gaudete Sunday in the middle of Advent, the Church offers a respite from penitential austerity: a touch of fes- tive white mixes with the season’s violet to give us the special rose-colored vestments, altar frontal, and hangings; the music has a bit more bounce in it; and roses adorn the sanctuary. Not coincidentally, the Fourth Sunday in Lent was once commonly called “Mothering Sunday” or “Refreshment Sunday.” In England, from the Middle Ages through the seventeenth century, the litur- gical themes of respite and consolation were put into practice on this day when apprentices and young people “in service” were granted a mid-Lent holiday to return home and visit their mothers (as well as the “mother church” where they were baptized). On this festive occasion--the original “Mother's Day”--the Lenten fast was relaxed and young folk offered their parents a present of “simnel cakes,” baked with fine flour, sugar, and fruit, and their parents gave them in turn “frumenty,” a dish of hulled wheat boiled in milk and seasoned with cinnamon and sugar.
