Laetare Sunday

With the Fourth Sunday in Lent, we come to the half-way mark of the season, and we exult that Easter draws nigh. The first word of the Introit for this Sunday’s Mass gives the day its name and sets the mood: Laetare! “Rejoice ye with Jerusalem; and be ye glad for her.” On this day, as on Gaudete Sunday in the middle of , the Church offers a respite from penitential austerity: a touch of fes- tive white mixes with the season’s violet to give us the special rose-colored vestments, altar frontal, and hangings; the music has a bit more bounce in it; and roses adorn the sanctuary.

Not coincidentally, the Fourth Sunday in Lent was once commonly called “” or “.” In England, from the Middle Ages through the seventeenth century, the litur- gical themes of respite and consolation were put into practice on this day when apprentices and young people “in service” were granted a mid-Lent holiday to return home and visit their mothers (as well as the “mother church” where they were baptized). On this festive occasion--the original “Mother's Day”--the Lenten fast was relaxed and young folk offered their parents a present of “simnel cakes,” baked with fine flour, sugar, and fruit, and their parents gave them in turn “frumenty,” a dish of hulled wheat boiled in milk and seasoned with cinnamon and sugar. Next Sunday, the fifth in Lent, begins Passiontide, the name designating the fortnight before Easter and the period that ushers in Holy Week and the Sacred Triduum. This time calls us to meditate more intensely on Christ’s sufferings. According to the Ordinariate Missal and Roman tradition, this Sun- day is called Passion Sunday or “the First Sunday in Passiontide,” followed a week later by Palm Sun- day which is “the Second Sunday in Passiontide.” The modern Roman Rite combines the two Sun- days and gives us at the beginning of Holy Week “Palm Sunday of the Passion.” In traditional Catho- lic usage, the last two weeks of Lent see the veiling of crosses and images and the Gloria Patri disap- pears from the Introit at Mass and from the Divine Office until Easter. At Our Lady of Walsingham, we follow the old English custom of marking the beginning of Passiontide with the Litany sung in pro- cession at the principal Mass, just as we did for the first Sunday in Lent. How San. Giuseppe and His Altar Helped Build Our Church

Did you ever wonder how the Sicilian custom of a St. Joseph Altar and supper became a tradition at Our Lady of Wal- singham Parish and how it had a major impact in the development of our current sanctuary? Back in 1996 when what is now St. Jude Hall served as the parish church, its offices and the parish hall, Father James Moore was the pastor of this small, parish which included Episcopalian converts and several cradle Catholics who loved it’s more traditional liturgy. Joanne Miranda Goulas, one of the forty or so parishioners, had shared with Father Moore her stories of the wonderful St. Joseph Altars which were popular in the Sicilian neighborhood churches of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where Joanne grew up. Father Moore, a historian, became interested in the custom and asked Joanne if she could put on a St. Joseph Altar and supper at Our Lady of Walsingham. “Oh Father,” Joanne replied, “that’s a lot of work and we are such a small parish.” Father Moore persisted in trying to get Joanne to volunteer to do the Altar on top of all of her other church responsibilities.

In an attempt to dodge Father Moore’s persistence, Joanne offered him the following challenge: “Father, if you will learn and then say a Latin mass on Fridays in Lent, I will organize a St. Joseph Altar and supper at Our Lady of Walsing- ham.” Now learning a completely new mass liturgy in Latin was no easy task, particularly for an Episcopalian convert, so Joanne thought she was safe. However, on New Year’s day, 1997, Father Moore called Joanne and said “Joanne, you had better sit down.”

Father Moore explained that he had not only mastered the Latin Mass liturgy, but was ready to start saying the Ordinary Form of the Latin Mass on Fridays that Lent (1997). Joanne began immediately preparing the more than twenty-five traditional Sicilian dishes, pastries and desserts for the celebration. Our Lady of Walsingham held its first St. Joseph’s Altar on St. Joseph’s feast day in 1997. Latin Masses became a staple at Our Lady of Walsingham and were said every Friday, and not just during Lent, until Father Moore's retirement in 2006. So that is how the St. Joseph Altar became a tradition at Our Lady of Walsingham and has been held every year since, except for two years during construction peri- ods.

“And now for the rest of the story.” It seems that Kay Laro, a regular member of a nearby parish, also loved the Latin Mass and attended the Friday Latin Masses at Our Lady of Walsingham on a regular basis. Kay loved our traditional and reverent liturgies and her generous gift initiated the building program for our new church. That is how Joanne Goulas’ devotion to St. Joseph got Father Moore to learn and institute the Friday Latin Mass that attracted one of our principal church patrons. And that is how San. Giuseppe and his altar helped build our present church! By John D’Antoni
