Especially considering the inspiration for the title was a town of 3,500 people. But faith looks at things a bit differently than reason, as faith lives from the unseen. I began to pastor in the community of Weaverville, California, in 1978. Like most young men, I was filled with vision and hope for what God could do, even in a small community. My challenge to the people was rather simple —let’s change the world. I couldn’t stand the idea of moving to a city “where the elephants go to die.” The mentality in such places doesn’t lend itself to shaping the course of world history. When I became the pastor, I immediately started teaching on the significance of anyone who will believe God. If I could shift the attitude of the church, anything was possible. The challenge was clear—if you live in a city of millions, the devil will tell you that you are only one person, and therefore insignificant. If you’re in a small community, the devil says the whole place is insignificant. But one person and God is a majority, which means there is no such thing as an insignificant person or city. Not even the devil seemed concerned about anything good coming from Weaverville. That meant our efforts would ambush his by honoring our King through faith-filled endeavors. I began to refer to Weaverville as “The Center of the Universe.” It was my humorous way of expressing a true, burning conviction. It’s important for you to believe the same for your city and your life. Only then will we take the risks necessary to help impact the nations of the world for Christ. My daughter-in-law, Candace, suggested the title for this book. She had heard the stories of how I often referred to Weaverville, California, as the center of the universe. It just seemed appropriate, as it bears my conviction, with a bit of tongue and cheek thrown in for good measure. It really does represent how I view wherever we live and the potential impact of our partnership with God. Many told me to put these articles into a book, but I always downplayed such words. My own mother was the strongest voice in this regard. My secretary always mailed the bulletin to my parents every week. Mom kept them all, of course. Almost on a whim one day I sent the entire PDF file of articles to my friend and agent Don Milam with Destiny Image Publishers. He loved them and asked permission to put them into print. I was happily surprised and agreed. Center of the Universe is a collection of humorous stories and lessons on life. Relax and enjoy. 1 THE INSIDE I had an unusual desire to write as a young man. But my education didn’t lend itself to such a desire. In fact I was almost embarrassed to have a dream of that nature. I didn’t qualify, and I knew it. It was never my intention to dishonor God, nor did I want to waste His time. If He didn’t want me to write, He needed to tell me. So I prayed and prayed and prayed about this dream. At this stage in my life I didn’t know that God was the one who put that dream into my heart. Plus, the fear of failure had a great effect on my biggest dreams. But I knew enough to pray. And things slowly changed. In the final season of prayer over this issue, God spoke to me clearly. This became my moment of breakthrough. In the middle of the night, His voice woke me saying, “Isaiah thirty, verse eight.” I woke up and thought, Wow, that was clear. I opened my Bible to Isaiah 30:8, which says, “Now, go, write….” He said, “Yes!” It’s exciting to get permission to pursue a dream. Yet I was always better at dreaming than pursuing, especially about something for which I was so ill equipped. It was obvious to me that I couldn’t sit down and write the next great American novel. I also knew that articles for major Christian magazines were out of the question. “Bill who?” And I didn’t feel I had enough insight for a book. So I got the idea for The Inside, which was a place on the inside of our weekly church bulletin that was perfect for a small article. This became my communication to our church family. It would give me the chance to share my heart as well as grow in the discipline of writing. And so a great journey began. The impact on the church was surprising and immediate. The encouraging words about The Inside articles came to me week after week, even from accomplished authors who had become part of our fellowship. It’s hard to imagine getting too much encouragement,so I kept all these words dear to my heart. News got around and we had people who attended other churches asking for copies of our bulletin.

Besides playing in the band, we all are on a working party every morning. There is a show on every night at the theatre but they are all the shows which we have seen in the states; although its something to pass the time away.

    Everything Worth Doing A Sermon by the Rev. Angela Herrera First Unitarian Church May 7, 2017 What a week! Thirteen candidating events involving 175 people. I have met with our branch congregations, financial teams, long time members, Standing Committees, justice groups, families, new members, Sunday volunteers, young adults, the whole staff, and one pensive two year old who came by to visit me during open office hours. We read a story about Thomas the Tank Engine. It has been a week of rich conversations. I am touched by your passion for this place and your commitment to it. I am humbled by the wisdom and experience you bring to it. I love hearing your hopes and dreams. I love to think seriously with you, and to laugh with you. Over 400 of you also participated in the Search Committee’s survey about what you seek in your next Senior Minister and what matters to you in this place. From that the Committee compiled a 105 page Congregational Record, which they shared with me and with you- you can find it on the church website. And the committee also shared with me 136 pages of your anonymous answers to open ended questions. Now I’m here to tell you what the search committee and I have heard you say, and about my hopes and vision for us. Let’s see, 400 survey respondents, 175 conversations, and I have.... 20 minutes. So... no problem. (ha ha). As long as we all agree that this is a twenty minute sermon about beautiful things that we will experience and do together, hopefully for the next twenty years.

We know that You are alive, that You have risen from the dead and seen in this last day and hour, the absolute proof of it, as far as we’re concerned, and to understand by Your Word Lord, that You’ve now done the same things by Your blessed Holy Spirit, that You did when You were here in the form of human flesh. Help us to recognize that, to understand it Lord, to know what the import, the impact is upon our lives, and help us Lord, to understand what You’ve done for us this day. And may we by it Lord, grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, to serve Thee acceptably, and be ready Lord, for the day which You have proclaimed ‘the great day of the Lord, of a judgment and a victory Lord, when You will take away a people Lord, unto Yourself, that You will bring back a people upon this earth immortal Lord, to serve You under the ideal conditions that You set forth in the Millennium, Father, when every man will be under his own vine or fig tree, everyone, Lord, in peace with the King and Prince of Peace here in our midst, governing and ruling from sea to sea Lord. And we just thank You for that promise we have.
