First Consolidated Bank Annual Report 2019.Pdf
Chairman’s Message The world today is in a very different place from where it was four months ago. The novel coronavirus disease, or COVID-19, continues to be a global health crisis, and is pushing many countries into a recession. The world economic growth has been impacted, as countries have enforced quarantines or lockdowns, closing their borders as well as mandating the closure of non-essential business. Job losses have skyrocketed, and consumer-driven economies are taking a heavy hit with the loss of purchasing power as well as the disruption of supply chains. Targeted businesses such as groceries, pharmacies, wellness, delivery, and communication services are growing but striving to meet demand. The Philippine economy had steadily grown by 6.0% in 2019, as declining inflation was driven by stabilizing food and energy prices. However, while it was originally projected to grow by about 6.5% in 2020, that expectation is now reduced to either negative or 1% growth, depending on the length of the quarantines in place. As part of the government fiscal response to COVID, the BSP reduced rates by 50 basis points in March 2020, and cut the reserve requirement for UKBs by another 200 basis points in order to inject liquidity into the market. Government stimulus programs are also underway. FCB successfully faced a number of challenges in 2019, such as DepEd’s implementation of a mandatory reduction in rates, which impacted our yields. However, 2019 overall was still a good year for our bank, as we continued to outperform the industry in terms of key banking ratios (return on equity, return on assets, and capital adequacy). -
About First Consolidated Bank
Chairman’s Message The world economy continues to grow; however, there are many risks threatening the delicate economic trade. US protectionism, Brexit, and nationalism in certain countries have potential adverse impacts. The uncertainty may cause global investment to fall as companies hoard cash, consumers curtail spending, and trade will decline, causing the real economy will suffer. The impact to the Philippine economy from the trade war will likely be minimal since the Philippines is not an export-oriented country. However, other issues posed larger risks to the Philippine economy in 2018: rising interest rates in the US encouraged outflow of hot funds back to the developed economies, the rising global price of oil as well as the rising local costs of rice (and other commodity products as a result) placed pressures on Philippine inflation. In order to combat the higher levels of inflation, the BSP raised Philippine interest rates by a total of 175 basis points in 2018. While inflation and interest rates continue to stabilize, there are still other factors which will affect the Philippine economy such as the upcoming election, OFW remittances, BPO revenues, and tourism. Considering these factors, the Philippines is still projected to be one of the fastest growing economies in the region. Strong consumer spending, OFW remittances, BPO earnings and the government’s Build Build Build program are all expected to continue to positively contribute to the Philippine economic growth. Heavy competition in the banking industry continues, and is expected to intensify. New lending competitors come in a vast number of forms outside of the formal banking structure—they include retailers, conglomerates, and even telcos are offering loan products via mobile phones.
