Slang adalah struktur bahasa yang berkembang di zaman modern yang digunakan khususnya oleh kawula muda. Slang berkembang selaras dengan berkembangnya budaya yang ada dilingkungan tersebut sehingga slang tidak mempunyai batas waktu, tempat ataupun latar belakang masalah. Slang juga dapat kita temukan dihampir semua bahasa yang ada didunia ini, dalam hal ini penulis membahas penggunaan kata-kata slang yang terdapat didalam bahasa Inggris. Didalam kertas karya saya yang berjudul “The Analysis of Slang Used in Ariana Grande’s Song lyrics”, penulis akan mengulas penggunaan kata-kata slang yang terdapat didalam lagu-lagu yang telah dipilih sebagai batasan masalah untuk dibahas didalam kertas karya ini. Metode yang digunakan oleh penulis adalah metode perpustakaan, dan juga dilakukan pencarian sumber pembahasan melalui internet untuk mendukung penulisan kertas karya ini. Semoga kertas karya ini dapat berguna untuk para pembaca dan dapat menjadi referensi untuk studi mengenai bahasa alang yang terdapat didalam bahasa Inggris.

Slang develops in tune with the envolving of existing culture the environment so that the slang does not have time,place, or community background limit. Slang can also be found in almost every language in the world, in this case the writer discusses the use of slang words found in the English language. This paper entitled “The Analysis of Slang Used In Ariana Grande’s Song Lyrics”, the writer will review the use of slang words found in the songs that was chosen as the extent of the problem to be discussed in this paper. The methods used by the writer is library method and sourcing of the discussion over the internet to support the writing of this paper. 1.1 Background of the Study

Language is inseparable from human being. People can not live without language. Language is most important thing for people to cummunicate. Iswahyuni (1998:1) says that language is a medium to express the idea, opinion, and feeling in the science and education world.

Suptiyanto (1991:1) says that language is arbitraty system of articulated sound made of by a group human as means of carrying on their society.

Human is a social creature, which means that one people cannot stand alone without cooperating with other people. While cooperating here, one human must take contact with the others, so in contacting one another people use language. Human activities are coded in the language.

Thus, language plays an important rule in human beings.

Slang is informal language that usually used in everyday amongst members of teenagers. Slang is exposed into spoken language. Slang is created based on such form as metaphor, simile, folk, etymology, hyperbole, and borrowing from foreign language. Lerner (1950:5) says that slang usually has short life, because it is invented to fit a particular situation at a given moment. For the language, slang is like a linguistic laboraty, where new words and form can be tested out, applied to variety of situations, and then not abandoned or incorporated into the regular language.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Slang can found in many litarary such as music, song, poem, drama, etc. Most of the people in the world like listening the music, especially the teenagers. Music one of the favorite entertainment in our life.

Song easily found in daily life because song is universal. Further more, the lyrics of song is also used slang language. Song is about melody and rhytm. Rinehart Holt and Winston (1998:61) said that slang is a piece of music to be sung of human voice.

Song is sung by solo singer, duet, group band, etc. There many kinds of song namely pop song, rock, dangdut, R&B music, was originally termed “raced music” and basically includes any form of music intented for black audiences.

Many people like to hear pop song and R&B song, Ariana Grande is an American singer and his song uses a lot of slang. Therefore I am interested to analysis slang and Ariana Grande is chosen as the sample of study.

1.2 Problem of the Study

1. What kind of slang languages are used in Ariana Grande’s song?

2. What is the meaning of each slang?

1.3 Purpose of the Study

1. To find out the kinds of slang used in the Ariana Grande’s song.

2. To find the meaning of slang used in the song.

As we know there are many song in the world, and some of them used slang language especially in American songs. In this study not all part analyze of language but from Ariana Grande’s namely Yours Truly album, the writer analyzed the seven song of the twelve songs contained in the album and only slang found in Ariana Grande’s song lyrics.

1.5 Methods of the Study

This paper is based on the library research by collecting, reading, and taking data from some books that relevant to the theme for getting information about the topic of slang. In addition, the writer also use internet that have many website about definition of slang.

1.6 Reason for choosing the topic

The writer chooses to analyze Ariana Grande’s song lyrics because the song lyrics is interesting and slang words are often used in American songs. In every lyrics can be found slang language in the form sentences or words, so the writer has the reason to understand the meaning of slang.

2.1 What is a Slang

Slang is the speech of today’s young people which filled with words and expressions. That are not found informal English, which are greatly enhanced by the sounds of their language, making it very expressive and colorful. Hornby (1974:807) syas that slang is words, phrases, meaning of words, etc.

A slang includes not just words but words that are used in a special way, in a certain social context. A slang is more or less common in nearly all ranks of society and in every way of life at the present day.

Although the term “slang” is sometimes use with more or less intentional inexactness, and has often been carelessly defined, the notion to which it corresponds in general use seems to be tolerably precise. There are two principal characteristics which are taken in conjunction, may serve to distinguish what is properly called slang from certain other varieties if diction that in some respect resemble it. The slang words is a deliberate substitute for a word of the vernacular, just as the characters of a chiper are substitutes fot a personal name. Thus, slang is not simply one of words of that can be used the same way in all situations. There are many ways to say the same things, depending on where are you are, whom you are talking to, and how you fell. It is usually used by a group of a society in informal situation to make a new identity and to identification a member of group.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA There are many definitons of slang, and none of them define in the same as another. one important point, which is always mentioned that slang is informal language, informal for it has not been widely and fully accepted by a society from all level because it is mostly spoken by young people.

2.2 Type of Slang

Partidge and Burke(2001:27-30) divide slang according to the field, where are the slang is used, it can be seen as follows: a) a). Abbreviation

Some of abbreviations are used in the novel, magazine, also

comics. Some of them are very popular and always expressed by

american. Some of abbreviations are slang but not all abbreviations are

used as slang expressions. The example: She ain’t let me, means: She

doesn’t let me. b) Grammatical Slang

In linguistics, grammar refers to the logical and structure rules that

govern the composition of the sentences, phrase, and word in any give

natural language. The term also refers to the study of such rules, and

this field includes morphology and syntax, often complemented by

phonetics, phonology, semantics, and pragmantics. For example: I

done hit the lottery, means: I have done hit lottery.

Baby’s expressions are used by parents to their baby or children in

order to make simple communication. Example: Look the little birdie,

means: Look the little bird. d) Cockney Slang

The characteristic of this slang use pronounced accent. For

example: the change of th to f or v, as in “fing” for “thing”, “farver” for

“father”; the vowel- sounds change from ou to ha as in “abhat” for

“about”. The following passage is the example of coockney slang

using taken from “Coockney Literature”. e) Public-House Slang

The characteristics of slang terms on this type are cheery,

materialistic, but not gross, for example: “boozer” (a public-house),

“second liker” (another drink, the same as the first), “balloon-juice”

(soda-water). f) Workmen’s Slang

For examples: brass, chips, dust, feathers, brads (money); sheep’s

foot (an iron hammer); saint Monday (the favorite day of the week);

out of collar, want a apron (out of work); screw (salary); get a sack (to

be discharge).

Many of this type are jargon, for example: bread basket (belly),

coal up (to feed), take a trip (giving up a job), chuck a dummy (to

faint), kick (to seek), real kate (a kind matron). h) The Slang of commerce

The characteristics of this kind is to abbreviate the words, for

example: deb. (debentures), ex div (without tge dividend), pref.

(preference stock), circs. (circumstances), com. (commercial traveler). i) Medicine, initials, abbreviations and euphemisms are the

characteristics of this type, as the tendency of medical person to their

actions, words, and prescriptions in mystery, for example, D.D.A (the

Dangerous Drug Act), C.S.M (Cererospinal Meningtis), Tb,

(Tubecurlosis), med lab (Medical Laboratory).

In this number, the sentence is grammatical slang because the grammar

In number 3 until 7, that are drippin, hangin, bangin, rangin, and slangin,

only one letter that lost, that is “g”. It makes the pronouncation of word

In number 9 until 11, the grammar of that sentences are not complete and

Ariana Grande was born in Boca Raton, Florida, in 1993 and began performing onstage when she was young.
