NETBALL IN NEW ZEALAND

Netball is one of the highest participation sports, number one for females, in the country and holds a significant place in New Zealand Society. Through its Zones, Centres, Clubs and Schools there are over 145,000 affiliated players.

The sport contributes significantly to communities both urban and rural, providing opportunities for members to participate in healthy activity, have fun, develop leadership skills and learn values of fair play and achievement. All of these attributes contribute to the development of netballers, officials and administrators as individuals and to their communities across the Zone.

Netball Northern Total Membership 49,040 (34% of total) 17 centres

NETBALL MAINLAND ZONE

The Netball Mainland (NM) Zone is one of five Zones across the country, established in October 2012 as part of the review of the structure of replacing the previous two regional entities; “Canterbury Netball” and “Tasman Netball,” and “Team Canterbury Netball Limited”.

The Zone has 18 affiliated Netball Centres; spread across the Nelson, Marlborough, Tasman, West Coast and Canterbury (as far south as the Waitaki river) areas, and has responsibility for the support and delivery of netball from community level through to high performance – leading the development of players, coaches, umpires, administrators, technical officials and volunteers across these levels.

BOARD CHAIR AND CEO REPORT

We always appreciate the opportunity this report provides us to take stock and reflect on the achievements we as a collective netballing community have made across another busy 12-month period. 2017 was a year that certainly deserves to be celebrated in many ways, although financial sustainability remains a challenge for our Zone and a number of others, having been established with no reserves, operating capital and ‘inherited’ debts from previous entities. This year saw the inaugural ANZ Premiership (ANZP) Netball competition get underway, with an exciting post ANZP Super Club competition in Nelson, involving the top four NZ teams and a number of teams from overseas. Participation numbers grew across the Zone: • 22,666 affiliated players (recreational, year 3 & 4 and year 5 & 6 greatest increase) • 1,673 coaches • 302 accredited umpires • 55 qualified and cadet bench officials Progress of this nature would not be possible without the ongoing contribution of our delivery agents and we are certainly indebted to Centres, Clubs and Schools for their invaluable support in achieving these milestones. Our events also continue to build year on year including; unprecedented numbers at our Zone Under 15 tournament, festival days and ANZP home games – attracting an average attendance of over 1,900 people. 2017 saw the Board engage HPSNZ to review the Netball Mainland Performance programme. There were eight key recommendations from this review, which have all been implemented. An undoubted highlight was the performance of the Hellers Mainland Beko Netball League team who finished in runner-up position after a closely fought final against the Central team.

GOVERNANCE The Board has remained stable in 2017, with NNZ appointee Darren Wright coming onto the Board in November 2016, replacing Bernadette Pinnell. We would like to thank Bernadette for her contribution to the NM Board and Zone governance. Next year sees the Board engage in its independent biennial governance review.

Netball Mainland Annual Report 2017 11

FINANCIAL It is disappointing to record an operating deficit for the 2016/17 financial year. There were a number of extraordinary expenses, increased costs, a reduction in grants/donations and gate receipts that contributed to this deficit. Revenue streams vary massively from year to year and our reliance on gaming trust funding continues to be a risk to our organisation. In addition, it is not always possible to secure the full funding required for the delivery of a project or salaried position and this also impacted our bottom line. Sponsorship revenue increased slightly on previous years, showing the benefits of investing in a dedicated Commercial Manager and we were thrilled to welcome national jewellery retailer “Silvermoon” as naming rights partner for our Tactix ANZ Premiership team and “Hellers” for the Mainland Netball League team. Generating sponsorship revenue, an equitable share of gaming trust funding, and support from local and central government remains a significant on-going challenge for not only Netball but women’s sport in general. For 2018 the key priorities are to increase sponsorship revenue, increase gate receipts, secure budgeted gaming trust funding and micro-manage expenses. Even achieving these key priorities will likely see the need to increase affiliation fees to cover the financial ‘gap’.

NATIONAL HONOURS It is always a huge thrill to see our players, coaches, officials and management selected for National honours. Congratulations to those who achieved selection in 2017: • Silver Ferns Squad – Temalisi Fakahokotau • Silver Ferns Development Squad – Ellie Bird, Erikana Pedersen and Zoe Walker • Fast 5 Ferns - Temalisi Fakahokotau, Erikana Pedersen and Zoe Walker • NZU21 - Charlotte Elley and Kate Lloyd • NZ U21 Assistant Coach – Julie Seymour • “Hunt for Height” Head Coach – Nic Kelly • FAST5 Ferns Manager - Leanne Harris • NZ Test Technical Officials – Anne Harrison, Aileen Neilson, Margaret Marsh and Kay Norris • NZ Test Statisticians – Vicki Reid, Robyn Vermeeren and Suzanne Whyte

Heartiest congratulations to Netball Mainland players; Charlotte Elley (Vice-Captain), Kate Lloyd and Assistant Coach Julie Seymour, of the NZ U21 side who were crowned World Youth Cup champions in Botswana, fending off Australia in the final 60-57. We are very proud of your achievements Charlotte, Kate and Julie.

• Barbara Reid - Mid Canterbury Netball • Rosemary Adlam - Mid Canterbury Netball • Karla Newlands - Mid Canterbury Netball • Sally Paki Paki - Nelson Netball Centre • David Pala’amo - Christchurch Netball Centre • Julie Seymour - Netball New Zealand • Sharon Kearney - Netball New Zealand • Dr Lesley Rumball - Netball New Zealand • Leigh Gibbs – NNZ Life Membership

TEST MATCH NETBALL Test match Netball returned to Christchurch in 2017, the first since 2014, with the Silver Ferns playing Australia in game two of the series. While the result did not favour the Silver Ferns it was great for fans across the Zone to see top tier nations in our sport play against each other.

SILVERMOON TACTIX We would like to acknoweldge Marianne Delaney-Hoshek in taking over from Sue Hawkins as Head Coach of the Silvermoon Tactix, when Sue Hawkins left mid-season. There were encourgaing results towards the end of the season which augers well for 2018.

Community Engagement We are very proud of our Silvermoon Tactix players who have been wonderful ambassadors on and off the court: • Delivering over 450 hours of promotional activity, coaching sessions, Centre presentations and coaching, holiday programmes, sponsor and charity engagements • Visits by players to clubs and schools in 14 of our centres during the season, with coaching programmes delivered in most centres • Delivering wellness seminars and nutritional information to sponsors and charities • Visits were made to over 20 schools in the zone and delivery of coaching at each school • Promotional appearances on television and radio • Delivery of the ANZ futureFERNS programme to over 200 children in Nelson

We have also had a number of players in Netball Development Officer roles who have engaged in additional work supporting Centres, in-schools programme and player development at all levels right across the Zone.

Charities The players and NM staff selected three charities for the team/Zone to align with during the season and worked with them as game day sponsors, engaging with their organisation and members.

The charities were – Ronald McDonald House South Island, Plunket and the Blind Foundation.

Netball Mainland Annual Report 2017 14

BEKO NETBALL LEAGUE (BNL) This amateur league was the outcome of recommendations of the National Competition Review and plays a significant role in the development of athletes, coaches and all support staff. Our thanks go out to “Hellers” who came on board as the principal sponsor of the Hellers Mainland Beko Netball League team in 2017. Coming from last position in 2016, to finish runners-up in 2017 is a great achievement for the Hellers Mainland team. This also shown the importance and benefits of a longitudinal programme that has seen athletes smoothly transition from the BNL into the ANZP.

ROADSHOW This year we conducted another very successful roadshow – “Creating Culture” – at five Centres across the NM Zone, delivered by Marianne Delaney-Hoshek. Plans are under way to further develop this programme for 2018.

COMMUNITY The Community team have been hugely busy working with participants and Centres delivering and coaching coaches in the ANZ futureFERNS programme. We have seen phenomenal growth in the junior ranks and will continue to be a major focus in 2018, along with youth and Secondary School development. Overall our participation numbers are up 3.4%, one of only two Zones in the country to show participation growth. Coach numbers have grown with 69 new Community Coaches ‘plying their trade’. Umpire and Bench Official development is on-going and will be aligned with the NNZ pathway in the new year.

FACILITIES DEVELOPMENT The shortage of suitable indoor court space for Netball continues to be an inhibitor to the growth of our sport particularly in Christchurch, the second largest city in the country. The much anticipated nine court Metro Sports Facility development in Christchurch was due to open in the first quarter of 2017, however, on-going delays by the previous and current government, have now pushed this date out to March 2021. This is hugely disappointing for our sport and the wider community but does provide the opportunity to review the design to ensure that the facility is affordable and fit for purpose.

CENTRE FORUM This year saw our fifth annual Centre Forum, a wonderful opportunity to share ideas, support each other and work together. Thank you to all who attended this year’s NM Forum. Your input and feedback has been hugely valuable for future planning.

Netball Mainland Annual Report 2017 15

THANK YOU We are indebted to our wonderful group of sponsors, partners and funders; in particular New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT), The Rata Foundation, Lion Foundation, Mainland Foundation, Southern Trust and Sport Canterbury/New Zealand for their on-going support, allowing us to continue to provide existing programmes and develop new initiatives to grow Netball participation.

We would also like to extend our thanks to those members of our community who sit on the NM Advisory Groups and our Selectors from across the Zone who commit endless hours to support our community, development and performance pathways.

To our entire NM Community; be you a player, coach, umpire, official or administrator, from the elite level through to the grassroots, congratulations on all that you have achieved across 2017 and be proud of the invaluable contribution you have made to our collective success.

NM would not be the same without the thousands of volunteers who give so generously of their time, and it’s because of this selfless commitment that netball continues to grow.

We would like to thank the NM Board for their support, guidance and the professional stewardship they provide to Netball in the Zone.

Finally, our thanks and appreciation to the wonderful staff at NM, led by CEO Brigit Hearn, for their unwavering commitment and tireless efforts for the betterment of Netball here in the Mainland.

COMMUNITY NETBALL REPORT

The NM Community Netball Team have thoroughly enjoyed the 2017 season. The major highlight was being able to travel around the Zone to meet and work with the incredible staff and volunteers that make up the community netball system. Our people are the Zone’s largest asset and netball would not exist without you.

He aha te mea nui o tea ao. He tangata, he tangata, he tangata, What is the most important thing in the world? It is the people, it is the people, it is the people.

ANZ futureFERNS

The national junior Netball programme, ANZ futureFERNS, is now well imbedded in all our centres in the Mainland Zone, with 2017 marking the first year all centres were running the year 5-6, 6 a-side programme. This programme has been hugely successful in all our centres with all seventeen of our centres receiving their Netball New Zealand Endorsement. With more than 900 coaches and helpers being upskilled through the ANZ futureFERNS foundation coaching modules, the programme continues to grow, this year by 6%. Thanks to Selwyn Netball Centre for hosting the ANZ futureFERNS Zone Festival Day for 2017. We had a great afternoon out in Lincoln with Silvermoon Tactix players, Netball Mainland staff, and local centre staff working together to deliver a fun and active programme for year 1-8 players. Everyone had a blast, and we are looking forward to taking this event to North Canterbury and South Canterbury for 2018. North Canterbury – 17th Feb 2018, Dudley Park, Rangiora South Canterbury – 3rd Mar 2018, Aorangi Park, Timaru

UMPIRE DEVELOPMENT The Zone Umpire Development Group (ZUDG) continues to support the umpiring and game official development across the zone. The Centre Support Programme continues to provide an avenue for our centres to receive support, guidance and advice from the wonderful ZUDG members. 2017 saw all umpire theory exams go online as well as a national community umpire review. From this review, the New Zealand Umpire Development Group (NZUDG) came up with the first six projects that will drive community umpire development across the country. These projects will begin in 2018.

Netball Mainland Annual Report 2017 19

ZUDG members 2017: Anne Marie Leech (Mid Canterbury), Trudy Eaden, Robyn Daly (Christchurch), Andrew Vincent (Nelson), Jose Zandbergen (South Canterbury), Sue James (NZUDG), Sheena Tyrrell (NZUDG).

TECHNICAL OFFICIALS DEVELOPMENT The Zone Technical Official Development Group (ZTODG) have continued to support the development of Bench Officials throughout the Zone in 2018. ZTODG members 2017: Margaret Marsh, Kay Norris, Maree Morel, Anne Harrison (Christchurch), Claire Lewis (Selwyn), Sandra Munro (Marlborough)

NETBALL SMART DEVELOPMENT NNZ with the financial backing of ACC have created 6 roles throughout the country to carry out the implementation and increased education/awareness of NetballSmart programmes. NM subsequently have a .75 FT dedicated NetballSmart Development Officer, Amy Eckersley, to support the Zone. NetballSmart provides an opportunity for us to educate and implement practices to develop strong healthy athletes with a decreased risk of serious injury. This is achieved through the NetballSmart Dynamic Warm up. Features of the NetballSmart programme will create physically, capable, competent movers who are more likely to stay involved in life-long physical activity if they receive a great experience with Netball. A decrease of serious injury claims will also decrease the impact of emotional, physical, social, psychological factors and the financial costs to Netball participants and communities.

The NetballSmart strategy involves four key objectives: 1. Decrease serious injuries in Netball players 2. Improve Player Welfare 3. Increase awareness/engagement of the NetballSmart philosophy 4. Develop Physically Capable Competent Movers

COACH DEVELOPMENT In April this year NM warmly welcomed Geni Tuilagi into the Coach Development Officer role. Geni came with an incredible amount of experience not only in the Netball coaching space but also as a professional educator, skills which the zone has benefited from enormously (see Coaching Report).

2017 INTERNS Netball Mainland was fortunate to have two interns in 2017 who worked on various projects throughout the year. Abbey Akurangi came on board from the New Zealand Institute of Sport, to help promote the

Netball Mainland Annual Report 2017 20

generous opportunity offered by Couplands Bakery designed to support clubs and schools in their fundraising efforts. Abbey will continue to work with Couplands and NM on this project into 2018.

Juliette Lewis came to NM from Lincoln University and worked on a number of projects including planning and delivering holiday programmes, ANZ futureFERNS delivery as well as carrying out some important research about why many netballers stop playing in their late secondary school/early university years. In 2018, Juliette will be finalising this research and it will be available for centres, clubs and schools to use to inform their planning.

In 2018, we will have three new interns working with us to deliver our school holiday projects, Tenieke Rielly, Jenne Jones-Poole, and Nicole Eastgate.

NETBALL MAINLAND ZONE FORUM The annual NM Zone Centre Forum was held on the 7th and 8th of October this year and coincided with the Silver Ferns vs Australia test at Horncastle Arena. NM loves to welcome our wonderful centre staff and volunteers to our home and we appreciate the time that you give up to join us for this weekend.

The theme this year was ‘Stronger Together’ and throughout the weekend we discussed how we can align our thinking, work together on new initiatives to stay ahead of the game and support each other through the many challenges that arise along the way.

One of the dominant concepts that came from these discussions was how we can ensure we are providing high quality and accessible opportunities to all participants of our game. There was passionate discussion about analysing how we currently do things, and deciding if this supports what we believe is ‘quality’. There was real a feeling of positive change in the room, with many Centres making a commitment to take some new thinking back to their communities to decide how they could enhance what is offered to their participants. NM is excited to support any Centre wishing to further these discussions in 2018.

PARTNERSHIP WITH SPORT NEW ZEALAND Netball Mainland is thrilled to announce that we have been selected as one of six organisations nationwide to embark on a partnership pilot with Sport New Zealand (SNZ). The philosophy behind the pilot is to work with targeted Organisations who are committed to implementing aspects of the Sport New Zealand Talent Plan to better impact athlete and participant experiences in sport. In conjunction with SNZ, NM is exploring what we can do to better enhance the quality of our athlete/participant experiences, to ensure we are able to keep netballers loving the game for life and strengthen netball in the Mainland Zone.

Netball Mainland Annual Report 2017 21

We are proud to see that the innovative work NM and all of you have been doing in 2017 has been noticed and appreciated by Sport New Zealand and we’re excited to take this to the next level. Sport New Zealand has a wealth of best practice research as well as enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff to support us on this journey and we look forward to working with you in 2018 to share learning.

HOLIDAY PROGRAMMES In 2017, the Netball Mainland team (staff, Tactix players, and interns) went out to five of our smaller Centres to deliver a fun skill based Holiday programme. We covered Kaikoura, Geraldine, Waimate, Hurunui and Malvern. The programmes were well received by all communities, reaching over 350 kids over the year. Next year we hope to expand our reach even further with our Holiday Programmes, our goal is to deliver a programme in each of our smaller centres without paid staff (10-11 Centres). To achieve this, we have recruited three new amazing interns who will have this as their main project for 2017. We have seen in the past that giving our interns the opportunity to plan and implement a project such as this can be very successful and we endeavour to continue that success with this group. All three interns are in their second year of study towards a Bachelor of Sports Coaching at the University of Canterbury.

SCHOOL VISITS TeRauoriwa (Tori) Harding, one of our Junior Development Officers, had a year full of engaging primary schools in the wider Canterbury region, promoting the national ANZ futureFERNS junior programme, and providing a quality netball experience to thousands of kids. She reached over 9000 kids through school visits and community ‘Have a Go’ day events.

Netball Mainland Annual Report 2017 22

YOUTH ADVISORY GROUP After the Netball Mainland’s Youth Advisory Group (YAG) was disbanded in 2016, we decided to refocus our energy towards this and put applications out for a Zone wide YAG, with the purpose of developing strategies and programmes that are relevant to Young People (age 16-23 years). We were pleased with the response and received applications from around the Zone. We will hit the ground running in 2018 when the group will meet for the first time and start planning for their first project. The Secondary School space is where we have the biggest drop off in participation numbers, and we realise that there are many factors contributing to this. This year, we invited two young girls from a local high school (Cashmere High School) to speak at the NM Zone Forum about their experiences within school Netball. This was a great opportunity for all our Netball Centres in the Zone to hear the stories of these young girls, and listen to some of their ideas around what would have kept them in the sport longer and/or bring them back in the future. We look forward to continuing these discussions next year with the YAG and see what projects the group can come up with to help with some of these issues.

SECONDARY SCHOOLS Another initiative brought in in 2017 was our Year 13/school leavers targeted events. After realising there was a gap in the transition between school netball and club netball, we decided to hit the road and visit some of these girls ourselves, with information on how to stay involved in the sport (and why) after school. A massive thanks to “Frooze Balls” for sponsoring the project and providing some delicious goodies.

COACH DEVELOPMENT REPORT

It has been two years since the establishment of the Coach Development Framework within Netball New Zealand. We have gained a better understanding of the specific role that coach developers play within the coach development system.

COACH DEVELOPER Coach Developers deliver and facilitate workshops with the overall goal to work alongside coaches to build their coach effectiveness. Over the two years and with the continual support of Sport New Zealand, Netball New Zealand (NNZ), Sport Canterbury and Sport Tasman, the Zone now has 16 NNZ accredited coach developers delivering the NNZ coach framework. As we build on the growth of coach development, it is exciting to have a few new coach developers who are currently working through the NNZ accreditation process. NNZ accredited coach developers have access to NNZ Development Forums, Zone training programme, Regional Sports Trust development opportunities, Sport New Zealand Development workshops and or equivalent development training programmes.

In 2017 many of our coach developers have attended these training forums including the Netball Mainland Coach Developer Forum in June 2017 and October 2017. At these forums, coach developers worked on their ability to capture the room as a presenter by nailing the first five minutes, effective questioning tools with the introduction of motivational interviewing, dealing with challenging group members, putting the learning into practice by delivering a component of the NNZ modules and receiving peer feedback.

Netball Mainland Annual Report 2017 24

The sharing of ideas and best practice in a safe learning environment allows for growth and development to take place.

SECONDARY SCHOOL COACHES Netball Mainland was once again invited to take part in the ‘Growing Coaches’ programme alongside Secondary School Sport Canterbury. This is an initiative from Sport New Zealand which not only supports students to gain a learning experience as a coach, but also contributes to their NCEA. This year, ten schools were involved with 97 students walking away with a practical experience in the coaching process. We look forward to future collaborations with Secondary School Sport Canterbury in developing opportunities and pathways for students coaches and umpires.

UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY, SPORT COACHING DEGREE In 2017, we have seen many first year University of Canterbury Sport Coaching students being placed in Christchurch Primary Schools. The year two and three students have been placed either in the Secondary School or club spaces as part of their practicums. It is relevant to note that twenty-five of these coaches have chosen Netball as their preferred sport to coach. NM has continued to support these students as they progress through their degree. The support received is access to the NNZ Community Coaching Award pathway, mentoring and observation sessions with the Coach Development Lead, as well as finding suitable and meaningful coaching opportunities in the community.

NNZ COACH DEVELOPMENT MODULES Despite changes to the NNZ coach framework in February 2017, NM saw 749 coaches attend NNZ developing modules throughout our netball centres. This is an improvement from 2016 where the numbers were sitting at 546. We value the great efforts coaches are putting into their development. The goal for 2018 is to increase the number of coaches achieving their Community Coach Award Level 1 and 2.

NM have enjoyed working alongside our coach developers in the delivery space. It is wonderful to engage with our community coaches and even more so when they were provided opportunities to observe the Beko trials as a part of the Selection module.

MENTORING PROGRAMME The effort that coaches put into their development is demonstration of their willingness and readiness for self-improvement. The benefits of working on one’s coaching craft will increase the confidence and performance levels of the athletes we engage with. Subsequently, this led to the creation of the mentor

Netball Mainland Annual Report 2017 25

programme. A programme designed to be a safe learning environment for coaches with the main purpose to enable them to become more effective in the things they do with their players, which will result in an improved performance of the player.

In March 2017, Sport Canterbury and Sport Tasman delivered the mentor training to twenty-five coaches from around the zone. These coaches were trained to observe a coach in action; to collect data in relation to a specific behaviour or action that the coach is focussing on at that time; how to provide feedback regarding what was observed and finally an action plan. What we have learnt from this experience is that twenty coaches were then mentored on average five times during the season. The coaches who were being mentored each coached an average of ten players having an impact on 200 players and their quality experience.

After reviewing the current mentor programme, NM have already started collaborating and planning with Sport Canterbury and other Regional Sport Organisations (RSO), as to how we could work better together to achieve shared outcomes for all sport.

NNZ COACH LEAD TEAM The development and growth of the five coach leads from each Zone has been led by Tania Karauria (NNZ National Training Manager). During our two-yearly forums in , the theme driving our performance in 2017 was, ‘Better than Before’. At these forums, coach leads have the opportunity to represent their Zones and to reflect on what is better than before. These opportunities not only allow us to show case our zones, but also to reflect and share best practice.

At our final forum in early December 2017, we were introduced to the new ACC NetballSmart Officers within our Zones. It is exciting to be working with Sharon Kearney (NNZ ACC NetballSmart Manager) and her cohort, to support and educate the community with regards to injury prevention. The focus for 2018 is the planning of the NNZ National Coach Developer Forum in February 2018.

TEAM CULTURE ROADSHOW Growing a group of individuals into a team, going in the same direction, is part of the challenge of coaching a team. In 2017, our Silvermoon Tactix Head Coach, Marianne Delaney-Hoshek, delivered a presentation to coaches at our Nelson, Christchurch and Ashburton Netball Centres. It was an exciting time to introduce our new Silvermoon Tactix Head Coach to the community, where she imparted her wisdom and knowledge, as to how she creates a successful team culture environment.

Netball Mainland Annual Report 2017 26

PLANNING FOR 2018 During the off-season, NM have met up with Centre staff members and coach developers to commence planning for 2018. We value the work that our volunteers and centres do throughout the season and we look forward to what 2018 will bring for us all.

2017 was the inaugural season of the new ANZ Premiership competition. It saw the exit of all the Australian teams and the addition of another NZ team called the “” based in South Auckland.

The 2017 Silvermoon Tactix team had a group of seven returning players with the addition of Temalisi Fakahokotau from the , Brooke Leaver from and Kadeen Corbin from England. Unfortunately for Jess Moulds, she ruptured her ACL playing for NZ A in the off season and this meant she was unavailable to play for the majority of the season. Jess still fulfilled some of her captaincy role with Hayley Saunders and supporting and doing the on-court captaincy role.

A wee ‘twist’ to the season was when Sue Hawkins resigned as Head Coach after five games, which meant I stepped into the role for the first time. It was a bit of a shock but I certainly enjoyed the challenge.

The team showed a great level of perseverance and progress in 2017. Pre-season we played matches in Dunedin against the Steel and then up to Otaki for the official ANZP pre-season tournament. This was a fantastic start for the competition, having all the teams together for some cultural activities and game play.

The season started with a few losses but there was a steady improvement in performance which led to two wins and two bonus point results. It was pleasing to see the growth in 2017, for example versus the Northern Stars we lost first time up by 11, then 4, and then won the last game by 4. Against the Steel we lost by 50 then 6, then 4.

Probably the most satisfying game was the win against the Northern Mystics in the last round by 11 goals which was the largest win against Northern Mystics in ANZ history.

SILVERMOON TACTIX AWARDS 2017 Temalisi Fakahokotou not only got Silvermooon Tactix Player of the Year, Members Player of the Year and Players Player of the Year - she also reclaimed a spot in the Silver Ferns.

Erikana Pedersen and Zoe Walker were named in the Silver Ferns Development Squad along with Silvermoon Tactix Rookie of the Year, Ellie Bird. Ellie had a remarkable season coming in as a new player in the BEKO league but being elevated to the Silvermoon Tactix.

Charlotte Elley and Kate Lloyd were named in the NZU21 team that won the World Youth Cup in Botswana.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT The players were fantastic ambassadors for the Silvermoon Tactix and completed all their sponsor and public appearance obligations with absolute professionalism. The players were always willing to spend time with sponsors and provide children with autographs and photos.

Over 450 hours of promotional work was completed by the players over the season. This was down (454hrs) from 2016, but with two less players in the squad the average hours completed was actually slightly higher.

The players visited 15 of our 18 centres over the course of the season. They signed, coached and had fun with many ‘budding’ future Silvermoon Tactix players.

PERFORMANCE REPORT

The development of players, coaches, umpires and technical officials is an on- going priority for the Zone. The major highlight for 2017 was the Hellers Mainland Beko team finishing 2nd.

HELLERS MAINLAND BEKO LEAGUE TEAM

The Beko Netball League is fundamental to strengthening Netball New Zealand’s performance pathway, the development of talent, and competitiveness of Netball New Zealand’s elite teams. The competition includes six teams playing a double round-robin and a semi and final. Netball Mainland took a unique approach to the Beko competition in 2017.

Firstly, by appointing Marianne Delany-Hoshek to the Head Coach Role as well as holding the Assistant Coach role to the Silvermoon Tactix, this giving Marianne the opportunity to run a longitudinal campaign. A key focus was for the athletes to be able to move between the two teams seamlessly.

Secondly, three Assistant Coaches were appointed to work alongside Marianne, Netball Mainland believes strongly in creating depth and building capability of coaches.

Thirdly, the NM Beko Team became a programme and had significant resources added to support the athletes, by doing this the same support staff as the Tactix were used so consistent messaging and support were in place.

NM Beko Netball League team had improved performances on the court as the result of this unique approach.

NNZ HIGH PERFORMANCE COACH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

NM coaches Julie Seymour, Marianne Delaney-Hoshek and Nic Kelly were selected for this NNZ initiative. NNZ provided a Leadership course that all three coaches took part in in 2017. Further individualised support to each of the coaches within the High-Performance Coaching framework was also offered. They will each have their own personal development plans and mentoring, assistance with leadership development and formulation of winning strategies.

NETBALL MAINLAND COMPETITION U15 Zone Championships In the third year of the Netball Mainland U15 Zone Championships and after the feedback received in 2016, the tournament structure was changed so all 20 teams played in the same Centres for each of the three phases. The competition was played in three phases; with Phase 1 being hosted by Nelson, Phase 2 hosted by West Coast and Phase 3 being hosted by North Canterbury Netball Centre.

Unfortunately, the weather didn’t co-operate with some of the worst weather that the Championships has ever seen over the 3 weekends. There will be further changes in 2018 after the review of this year’s competition.

AUDIT & RISK COMMITTEE REPORT For the year ending 30 November 2017

COMMITTEE PURPOSE The purpose of the Audit and Risk Committee is to provide the board with assurance that: • All financial matters and prepared financial reports and statements comply with accounting standards, are true and fair and are not misleading (to extent it is able given the role of NNZ Shared Services contract;) and • Prudent and appropriate financial management is maintained • An appropriate system of internal controls operates by Netball Mainland; and • All material risks are identified and appropriately managed

COMMITTEE REPORT

The Committee and the Board has had a number of risks come to fruition in the last year with Silvermoon Tactix Coach Sue Hawkins leaving, further uncertainty about the proposed Metro Sports Facility, uncertainty about the future commitment of the Tactix naming-rights sponsor, Silvermoon, due to ownership changes, and on-going financial challenges for Netball Mainland (NM).

On a positive note, the Zone has further enhanced its relationship with Netball New Zealand throughout the year on a number of fronts and have worked together to ensure the NM Strategy is consistent with the Whole of Netball (WON) Plan and that it is implemented as expected.

The relationship with Centres continues to be strong and there has been an increased focus on roles and responsibilities to ensure the WON Plan is implemented. The Board has also agreed to its own plan for greater engagement and visibility amongst the Centres.

The Silvermoon Tactix completed the season under the Assistant Coach Marianne Delaney-Hoshek and had an encouraging season with two wins albeit the team finished the season in bottom place overall. The Beko team, Hellers Mainland, continued under the assistant coaching staff and was second in the competition losing the final by only 2 goals.

Under the new Head Coach, Marianne Delaney-Hoshek, the Silvermoon Tactix looked a different side and with Marianne appointed for 2018 there is a very positive feeling held for the 2018 competition. Similarly, with the Hellers Mainland Beko team which has already proved its capability and, as a ‘feeder’ competition for the ANZ Premiership, the success augurs well for the future of the Silvermoon Tactix too.

Netball Mainland Annual Report 2017 42

The Metro Sports Facility is a key post-earthquake anchor project and would provide much needed indoor-courts for Christchurch, able to be used by Silvermoon Tactix, Hellers Beko teams, as well as Christchurch Netball Centre, and to host national age group netball events. The ongoing-delays, uncertainty about the final plans and, with the change of government, the latest review has created further uncertainty and delays which is very disappointing.

With the success in securing Silvermoon as the Tactix naming-rights sponsor having further uncertainty of its on-going support due to a change in ownership was far from ideal. However, the new owners have assumed the two-year deal that the naming-rights provided for and, with the 2018 season so close, we are pleased that the relationship will be maintained with the new owners.

The Committee would dearly love to not have to focus on commercial revenue but 2017 has also come with challenges of securing the sponsorship needed to support the Silvermoon Tactix as well as the on- going reliance on gaming trust funding to support much of the operations of NM as a whole.

With the support of Commercial Managers Steve Brooker, and Megan Keith-Mitchell in the second half of the year, engaging and nurturing new potential sponsors has continued to be a major focus. The Board has maintained strong oversight of the sponsorship revenue streams and to ensure even more focus a new Sponsorship Committee was established to liaise with Steve and Megan, as well as CEO Brigit Hearn, to track sponsorship revenue opportunities and report back to the Board.

We are very thankful for the previous support of a very generous benefactor. However, indicators are this will not continue in 2018.

In addition, NM has maintained strong engagement with Netball New Zealand to ensure communication has been open and that cooperation is maintained to collectively work on the financial challenges NM faces.

Financial Position

The 2017 financial year has come with familiar challenges. The full year budget provided for a modest $40k net surplus and the final result was an operating deficit of $228k due to a number of extraordinary (unbudgeted) expenses, increased costs and reduction in benefactor funding.

The Board and management have continued to maintain strong financial controls both in terms of expenditure and sourcing revenue to meet on-going cashflow requirements.

Risk Register

The Committee has regularly reviewed the Risk Register as required and made changes as appropriate.

The notable area of on-going focus and where the most risk sits is, unsurprisingly, in the area of sponsorship and gaming grant revenue.
