The concept of organisational self-understanding denotes members’ the strategy process understanding of their organisation’s identity. The study illustrates that strategy processes in companies are processes of self-understanding. During strategy ma- king, strategic actors engage in the interpretation of their organisation’s identity. Strategy dynamics in Scania and Handelsbanken This self-understanding provides guidance for strategic action while it at the same time implies understanding strategic action from the past. Organisational self-understanding is concerned with the maintenance of in- stitutional integrity. In order to achieve this, those aspects of self-understanding that have become particularly institutionalised need to develop in a continuous manner. Previous literature on strategy and organisational identity has put too much emphasis on the stability/change dichotomy. The present study shows that it is possible to maintain continuity even in times of change. Such continuity can be established by avoiding strategic action that is perceived as disruptive with regard to self-understanding and by providing interpretations of the past that make developments over time appear as free from ruptures. Self-undertsanding is hence an inherently historical phenomenon. Empirically, this study is based on in-depth case studies of strategy processes in two large Swedish companies, namely the truck manufacturer Scania and the bank Handelsbanken. Language Variation and Ethnicity in a Multicultural East London Secondary School Shivonne Marie Gates Queen Mary, University of London April 2019 Abstract Multicultural London English (MLE) has been described as a new multiethnolect borne out of indirect language contact among ethnically-diverse adolescent friendship groups (Cheshire et al. 2011). Evidence of ethnic stratification was also found: for example, “non-Anglo” boys were more likely to use innovative MLE diphthong variants than other (male and female) participants. However, the data analysed by Cheshire and colleagues has limited ethnographic information and as such the role that ethnicity plays in language change and variation in London remains unclear. This is not dissimilar to other work on multiethnolects, which presents an orientation to a multiethnic identity as more salient than different ethnic identities (e.g. Freywald et al. 2011). This thesis therefore examines language variation in a different MLE-speaking adolescent community to shed light on the dynamics of ethnicity in a multicultural context. Data were gathered through a 12-month ethnography of a Year Ten (14-15 years old) cohort at Riverton, a multi-ethnic secondary school in Newham, East London, and include field notes and interviews with 27 students (19 girls, 8 boys). A full multivariate analysis of the face and price vowels alongside a quantitative description of individual linguistic repertoires sheds light on MLE’s status as the new London vernacular. Building on the findings of Cheshire et al. (2011), the present study suggests that language variation by ethnicity can have social meaning in multi-ethnic communities. There are apparent ethnolinguistic repertoires: ethnic minority boys use more advanced vowel realisations alongside high rates of DH-stopping, and the more innovative was/were levelling system. -

The Swedish nation state (1846- 1971) in practice created a system of institutionalized racism towards the nomadic Saami. Saami organizations managed to force the Swedish welfare state to adopt a policy of ethnic tolerance beginning in 1971. The earlier racist policy, however, left a strong anti-Saami rights legacy among the non-Saami population of the North. The increasing willingness of both the left and the right of Swedish political life to take advantage of this racist legacy, makes it unlikely that Saami self-determination will be realized within the foreseeable future. This is a compilation thesis consisting of three different articles with the purpose to explore the relationships between language practices, identity construction and learning in the context of the Vehicle Program, a vocational program in Swedish upper secondary schools. A feature of the particular setting studied here that sets it apart from the general education of auto mechanics in Sweden is that it was carried out in English. The study focuses on language practices within a community of practice where the norms for second language use, gender arrangements and identity work are negotiated in conversations between students and between students and teachers. The language practices are considered as talk-in-interaction, and identity construction and learning are understood as processes in socially situated activities. The study was conducted through an ethnographic approach, including observation, field notes, approximately 200 hours of video recorded interactions, and interviews with students and teachers. The recorded interactions were analysed using tools from conversational analysis and methods focusing on linguistic activities and interactional patterns. -

Debating Swedish Language Politics and Ideology in Contemporary Sweden Tommaso M. Milani Centre for Research on Bilingualism Stockholm University Doctoral Dissertation 2007 Centre for Research on Bilingualism Stockholm University Abstract This thesis is concerned with three language debates that reached their most crucial peaks in Sweden at the beginning of the twenty-first century: (i) the debate on the promotion of the Swedish language, (ii) the debate on language testing for citizenship, and (iii) the debate on mother tongue instruction. The main scope of the thesis is to take a theoreti- cally multi-pronged approach to these debates trying to shed light on the following aspects: Why did such debates emerge when they did? Which discourses were available in those specific historical moments? Who are the social actors that intervened in these debates? What is at stake for them? What do they claim? What systems of values, ideas and beliefs – i.e. ideologies – underlie such claims? What are the effects in terms of identities, objects of political intervention, commonsensical knowledge and authority that these discourses and ideologies produce? Taking Sweden as a case in point, the thesis adds to the existing literature another example of how language debates are the manifestation of conflicts between different language ideologies that struggle for hegemony, thus attempting to impose one specific way of envisaging the management of a nation-state in a time of globalisation. In their outer and most patent facets, these struggles deal with the relationships between languages in today’s Sweden, and how the state, through legislation, should – or should not – regulate such relationships in order to (re)produce some kind of linguistic order. -

Making the threatening other laughable: Ambiguousperformances of urban vernaculars in Swedish media, Language & Communication, 71, 1-15. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.langcom.2019.11.001 Introduction Youth speech styles in multilingual settings have been the object of a large body of sociolinguistic inquiry since the early 1980s (see Hewitt, 1982, 1986; Kotsinas, 1988; see also Cheshire et al., 2011; Kern and Selting, 2011; Madsen, Karrebæk and Møller, 2015; Nortier and Svendsen, 2015; Quist and Svendsen, 2010; Wiese, 2012). Rampton (2011, 2015) has recently suggested the umbrella term ‘contemporary urban vernaculars’ to label these linguistic phenomena in a way that transcends age and ethnicity. After all, contemporary urban vernaculars are not only employed by young people (see in particular Rampton, 2015; Eliaso Magnusson and Stroud, 2012), nor are they spoken by ethnic minorities alone (Årman, 2018). In the Swedish context, the term ‘ortensvenska’ (‘Suburban Swedish’) has been used to refer to these linguistic phenomena. Here the Swedish word orten literally means ‘suburb’ and carries the social class connotation of the American ‘project’ or the British ‘estate’. Another well spread label of the same style, ‘Rinkeby Swedish’ (Rinkebysvenska), also refers to an urban periphery: the multiethnic and socioeconomically disadvantaged Stockholm suburb of Rinkeby. Most importantly for the purpose of this article, ‘Rinkeby’ Swedish has been turned by media discourses into an ‘icon’ (Irvine and Gal, 2000) of ethnic otherness, associated with an aggressively sexist and homophobic masculinity (Author 1, 2007; Author 1 and Author 3, 2009; Author 3, 2010; Author 3 and Author 1, 2012: Stroud, 2004, see also Cornips, Jaspers and Rooij, 2015 for a discussion on labelling of styles).
