President Andrew Hamilton Office of the President New York University 70 Washington Square South New York, NY 10012 [VIA EMAIL] July 7th, 2021 Dear President Andrew Hamilton, We are writing to deliver a petition, attached to this letter, signed by 1,133 people urging you to stop racial profiling Asian American and immigrant professors at New York University (NYU) and protect their rights to due process. Two tenured professors of Asian ancestry at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine are facing unjust termination due to the National Institute of Health (NIH) investigations related to the Justice Department’s “China Initiative,” a discriminatory initiative launched under the Trump Administration. Under this initiative, the federal agencies such as the FBI and NIH have pressured NYU into profiling Asian Americans and Asian immigrants. The result is the ruined careers and lives of NYU professors. We urge NYU to: ● Immediately stop the racial profiling of Asian American and immigrant faculty members and to protect their rights to full due process; ● Reinstate the due process protections to School of Medicine medical professors that had been in place for all NYU faculty members since the 1980s so they may fight the injustices properly; ● Minimize entanglements with law enforcement and the FBI; and ● Provide clear, updated guidelines and instructions regarding grant application requirements, disclosures and conflicts of interest forms. Professors and researchers should have the opportunity to correct their forms without devastating employment consequences such as suspension and termination. As a university of international standing, NYU prides itself on its diverse faculty, significant international student population, and extensive global network. It maintains two degree-granting institutions outside the United States, one in China and one in the UAE. The university administration should not be caving to Trump-era racist policies by targeting scientists, researchers, and scholars based on their race, ethnicity, or ancestry. This contradicts NYU’s overall mission of global research, teaching, and scholarly collaboration. Universities such as NYU have encouraged international academic collaborations and transnational research initiatives, including with universities in China. As the corresponding guidelines surrounding international collaboration and disclosures change, the university ought not be criminalizing past behaviors that they often encouraged. NYU should stand up for its faculty and contest federal government overreach, rather than serving its faculty up on platters. Racial profiling is not only morally wrong, it is an ineffective weapon often wielded for malicious intent. We urge NYU to uphold its institution’s values, live up to our nation’s democratic ideals, and stand up in the face of injustice.
