F r o m to the Caspian Sea

A luxury river cruise along the aboard the MS Volga Dream 24th June to 6th July 2018 ere is a wonderful opportunity to travel along ‘the main street of HRussia’, an apt title for the mighty Volga River as she snakes her way from Moscow and through the Russian heartland to the Caspian Sea. Along the way we will encounter the many ethnic peoples of the Central Volga, learn something of their cultures and enjoy the ever changing landscapes of countryside and city, of towns and villages. Pass small hamlets of wooden houses, fabulous kremlins, glorious cathedrals and, in stark contrast, some vast industrial complexes. It is a fascinating time to undertake such a journey, to witness the turning point of economic development in an area which sees few tourists and is very much the motor of the Russian economy.

Our river journey will begin in Moscow, Mother ’s first city and from here our luxurious travelling hotel will transport you through the vast lands of the to the ‘Gates of the Caspian Sea’. Along the way we visit fascinating places such as ancient Nizhni Novgorod and some of the cities of the Golden Ring, Volgograd (Stalingrad) scene to some of the fiercest fighting of the Second World War and ultimately Astrakhan, a former capital of the Tatar Empire which fell to in 1556. Such a trip by any other means than a river vessel would be difficult to comprehend and to add even further to our experience we will be joined by local guides who will provide much insight in to Russian history and politics.

The Itinerary Day 1 London to Moscow, Russia. Fly by scheduled flight. On arrival transfer will be treated to a concert from a local child folk group and experience a to the MS Volga Dream. The remainder of the day is at leisure. Dinner traditional Russian dinner with vodka tasting. tonight will be served on board. Day 7 . As we approach the Republic of Tatarstan, Russian Orthodox Day 2 Moscow. Our day will start with an orientation tour of Russia’s capital Churches no longer dominate the river banks, being instead, replaced city followed by a ride on Moscow’s ornate metro. Following lunch in a local by the occasional Muslim mosque, all beautifully adorned and with their restaurant we will proceed to the old Tretyakov Gallery to view its extraordinary own unique character. In the afternoon, we will disembark from the vessel and diverse collection of Russian art, from 12th century icons to 20th century to explore Kazan, the centre of Tatar culture in Russia. Here, we will visit paintings. We will return to the MS Volga Dream for dinner this evening. the white-walled Kazan Kremlin where the famous mosque, Kul-Sharif, neighbours the old Peter and Paul Cathedral. Later today we will enjoy a Day 3 Moscow. Our exploration of Moscow continues this morning with a concert by a local Tatar folk group. visit to the world famous Kremlin and its Armoury Museum, consisting of Tsarist thrones, ceremonial crowns, coaches and gifts of state. We will then Day 8 Samara. Relax on the vessel’s Sun Deck and admire the serenity and visit the magnificently frescoed 15th century Assumption and Archangel beauty of the Zhigulevskie Mountains as we approach the city of Samara. Cathedrals before returning to the MS Volga Dream for lunch and to begin our sailing along the Volga River. This evening we will be formally introduced to the Crew at the Captain’s Welcome Reception and Dinner.

Day 4 Uglich. We will arrive this morning into Uglich, a city that dates back to the 10th century. Our walking tour of this Golden Ring city will include the Chapel of Dmitry, a 17th century treasure built on the site where Ivan the Terrible’s 10-year old son met his death. We will also visit the Church of the Transfiguration, noted for its beautiful iconostasis, and attend a choral musical concert.

Day 5 Yaroslavl. This morning visit the oldest city on the Volga River, Yaroslavl, a World Heritage Site. In the Spassky Monastery see the Transfiguration of the Saviour, adorned with murals depicting St John’s apocalyptic visions before visiting the richly frescoed Church of St Elijah the Prophet. Enjoy a costumed reception at the Governor’s House before reboarding the MS Volga Dream for lunch and sailing on to our next port of call.

Day 6 Nizhni Novgorod. Formerly named Gorky and once a wealthy commercial centre poised on the trade routes to the East, Nizhni Novgorod became a closed city due to the military activity involved there during the Soviet era. We will learn much of the city’s history, including how it became a place of exile for political prisoners, also having the opportunity to walk the ramparts of the 16th century Kremlin with its spectacular views and finally, to visit a number of the city’s elaborately painted churches. On arrival into Samara, we will depart on a city tour, including a visit to its its heroic defense by the Russian people during World War II, this being space museum, and the fascinating Samara Art Museum. the grounds of the most decisive battles on the eastern front. We will visit the memorial on Mamayev Hill, where some of the bloodiest fighting Day 9 Saratov. Once home to a large German community, today Saratov transpired and also spend time at the Stalingrad Battle Panorama Museum. is known for its connection to Russia’s first cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin, who lived and studied here. During our guided city tour we will visit the Day 11 Sailing. Enjoy a relaxing day aboard our luxurious vessel as we Radishchev State Art Museum, being the first Russian picture gallery gently cruise to Astrakhan, a city set at the mouth of the River Volga, flowing outside of St Petersburg and Moscow. Return to the vessel for dinner and directly into the Caspian Sea. Arrive this evening and moor overnight. continue sailing. Day 12 Astrakhan. Our exploration this morning will focus on the fortress Day 10 Volgograd. Formerly known as Tsaritsyn and then Stalingrad, the built in the reign of Ivan the Terrible.
