  • THE TWO XUN the Contributions of Xun Yu and Xun You to the Foundations of Wei Yang Zhengyuan the End of the Han Dynasty Began Dr
THE TWO XUN The Contributions of Xun Yu and Xun You to the Foundations of Wei Yang Zhengyuan The end of the Han Dynasty began dramatically in 189 as the General Dong Zhuo lead his troops into the capital and usurped power. Over thirty years later, the end was completed by the abdication of the last Han Emperor Liu Xie, posthumously Emperor Xian “the Worthy,” to Cao Pi, posthumously Emperor Wen “the Literary,” in 220. This thirty year transition, one of the most famed and romanticized in Chinese history, involved a near total collapse in Imperial authority, and as a result the celebrated “Three Kingdoms,” the three claimant successors to Han, were forced to build their states almost from the ground up.1 Of the three, the most successful in rebuilding and maintaining the institutions of Han was by far the Wei. Despite their Imperial ambitions, Shu in the Sichuan basin and Wu about the middle and lower Yangzi were largely warlord states based on the frontiers of the former Empire. Wei controlled the former Imperial heartlands in the central plains and about seven-tenths of the former registered population, and though the Wei dynasty was eventually subverted by the Sima family and replaced by the Jin, it was upon the foundations laid down by Wei that Jin was eventually able to conquer its rivals and briefly reunify the Empire.2 The foundations of Wei were laid under the leadership of Cao Cao, posthumously Emperor Wu “the Martial,” a talented and ambitious member of the middle and lower gentry. 3 When Dong Zhuo first seized power in the capital, Cao Cao sold his family resources to raise personal troops and join the coalition of opposition forming against Dong Zhuo in the eastern parts of the Empire.

  • Chinese Indonesians Reassessed
Chinese Indonesians Reassessed The Chinese in Indonesia form a significant minority of about 3 percent of the population, and have played a disproportionately important role in the country. Given that Chinese Indonesians are not seen as indigenous to the country and are consistently defined against Indonesian nationalism, most studies on the commu nity concentrate on examining their ambivalent position as Indonesia's peren nial "internal outsider." Chinese Indonesians Reassessed argues for the need to dislodge this narrow nationalistic approach and adopt fresh perspectives which acknowledge the full complexity of ethnic relations within the country. The focus of the book extends beyond Java to explore the historical development of Chinese Indonesian communities in more peripheral areas of Indonesia, such as Medan, the Riau Islands and West Kalimantan. It reveals the diverse religious practices of Chinese Indonesians, which are by no means confined to "Chinese" religions, and the celebration of "Chinese" ethnic events. Presenting a rich array of his tor ical and contemporary case studies, the book goes beyond national stereotypes to demonstrate how Chinese Indonesians interact with different spaces and envi ronments to establish new Chinese Indonesian identities which are complex and multi-faceted. The book engages with a larger global literature concerned with diasporic Chinese identities and practices and offers sophisticated and empiri cally grounded insights on the commodification of ethnic cultures and religions.
