Radio broadcasting is an essential service for First Nation communities. To state the bleeding obvious, community radio is a vital coalface in the open cut mine of Australian media. It provides a dump truck with grunt and poke for Australians, of all backgrounds, with ideas Adequate government funding is vital if we are to retain our new digital radio and updates struggling to be heard elsewhere on the dial. services and have a digital radio future. This is of benefit not just to First Nation people, but to all Australians. Community radio introduced me to a cinema outside Hollywood, to the glorious shock of independent music coming from my own city, from my own country: it introduced me to theatre and introduced me to art. I can still recall the dangerous, thrilling excitement shooting through my body when, as a kid in the suburbs, I first heard the work of local artists, writers and musicians on community radio: it made me dare to dream the seemingly impossible, that one day too I could be a writer. The future of media is digital, we all know that. Community radio allows us to envisage a future that is not beholden to the dictates of government or to the ruthless imperative of the rationalist dollar. I think a digital media in this country without community radio being part of it would be a future not worth having. It would be a future without the possibility of dreams.
