It tells the story of Onizuka of days as GTO: The Early Years Vol.13 high school hooligan. This being a shonen manga in a high school setting it has the requisite sex, violence and toilet humor. With that vein the stories in it reflects those desires. If the punk Onizuka has one redeeming quality, it would be his loyalty to friends. He never backed down from any challenge that could possibly kill him if only to help a friend. That and despite the hormones, made him an interesting character. It was a fun read nonetheless. An Annotated Bibliography by Jack Baur and Amanda Jacobs-Foust with Carla Avitabile, Casey Gilly, Jessica Lee, Holly Nguyen, JoAnn Rees, Shawna Sherman, and Elsie Tep May 17th, 2012 Table of Contents Introduction 2 Young Readers 3 Middle School 7 High School 14 Older Teens 22 Prepared by BAYA for the California Library Association 1 Introduction It’s no secret that comics (or “graphic novels,” if you prefer) are hot items in the library world these days. Oh, we’ve known that for years, but recently publishers have been getting into the game in a big way. Too big, arguably. As publishers struggle, it seems like more and more they are turning to graphic novels as new revenue streams, to diversify existing properties, or as ways to repackage old content. With the deluge of titles coming at us, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for a librarian who isn’t deeply invested in their GN collection or tuned into the world of comics publishing to discern the excellent titles from the merely popular, and the quality from the... well, crap. And oh there’s a lot of crap out there these days... But there’s a whole lot of great stuff, too. Comics are a wonderful and unique medium, which allow any kind of story or instruction to be delivered in a way that is fun, engaging, and accessible. Just like other storytelling forms, the content can be simple and amusing, or it can be deep and challenging. It’s no surprise that comics are seeing such a jump in popularity and acceptance now.

  • Ownership Concentration in the U.S. Comic Book Industry
From McAllister, M.P., Sewell, Jr., E. H., & Gordon, I. (2001). Comics and Ideology. NY: Peter Lang. @2001 Peter Lang. Chapter 2 Ownership Concentration in the U.S. Comic Book Industry Matthew P. McAllister In the May 24, 1998 issue of The New York Times, there appeared a 3,200-word essay about the Marvel Entertainment Group, for years the dominant publisher in the comic book industry (Bryant, 1998). The illustration that accompanied the story was a drawing of two angry figures slugging it out in a fierce battle royale. However, this article did not appear in the entertainment section, the arts section, or even the book section. It appeared in the business section. The article was not about the hottest titles, characters or artists, but instead about stock values, junk bonds, and corporate assets. And the two figures pummeling each other were not fictional superheroes, but rather cari- catures of two Wall Street moguls, Ronald Perelman and Carl Icahn. In fact, the news article focused specifically on the dire nature of the comic book market and the struggle for control over Marvel, the industry leader, that took place between these two financial tycoons. This article joined a series of news reports from 1996 through 1998 that appeared in other business venues like The Wall Street Journal, The Hollywood Reporter, and The Financial Times of London. Such articles collectively presented a troubled image of the economic and industrial dynamics of the comic book industry in the late 1990s. This chapter will focus on these dynamics from the perspective of political economy, arguing that the comic book industry is characterized by increased conglomeration and ownership concentration.

  • Japanese Publishing Industry Summary 1. Market Overview
Industrial Report (C) JETRO Japan Economic Monthly, July 2005 Japanese Publishing Industry Japanese Economy Division Summary In 2004, Japan's publishing industry reversed course to show an increase in book sales due to the release of several million-sellers. The aggressive use of a marketing technique known as "media-mix" along with comprehensive publicity and advertising programs are credited with this development. While Japan's publishing industry has traditionally consisted of publishing firms, distribution agencies and retail stores, the emergence of the Internet has spawned new forms and channels of publishing. Other significant developments in the publishing industry include the increased popularity of Japanese comic books and magazines overseas. 1. Market Overview The All Japan Magazine and Book Publishers’ and Editors’ Association estimates publication sales in 2004 at 2,242.8 billion yen, a 0.7% increase over the previous year and the first such increase in eight years. Books accounted for 942.9 billion yen, a 4.1% increase over last year, while magazines only registered 1,299.8 billion yen, a decrease of 1.7% (Fig. 1). Several million-sellers created a bright spot in the 2004 sales figures although the weeklies led the slide in magazine figures. • Cerebus: from Aardvark to Vanaheim, Reaching for Creative Heaven in Dave Sim's Hellish World
Cerebus: From aardvark to Vanaheim, reaching for creative heaven in Dave Sim's hellish world Tim Blackmore Resume: Tim Blackmore analyse la dimension intertextuelle des bandes dessinees de Dave Slim: a la fois evidentes et complexes, les allusions au cinema, a la peinture, aux genres litteraires et paralitteraires permettent de mieux preciser la frontier'e souvent incertaine entre la litterature reservee a lajeunesse et la litterature destinee aux adultes. Working from Kitchener, Ontario, Dave Sim writes, draws, and markets Cerebus, a highly successful black and white comic about an ambitious aardvark. When he began it in 1977, the comics world had dire warnings for him and for his then wife Deni Loubert (Cerebus's publisher): "We were told that we couldn't make it if we didn't go to New York" (Wawanash 31: 22). The overt threat implies that creative activity can only be successful in approved geo- graphical, financial and artistic surroundings. But Sim refused to accept that idea; as Gary Groth, editor of The comics journal, noted recently, "if Dave Sim at times seemingly operates out of an ivory tower, it should be remembered that he built it himself (Groth,"Repentant" 80). Discorporate Cerebus Sim's isolation is a key factor in the development of Cerebus. Remote from even the meagre support offered by the comics community, away from the corporate lap of above-ground American comics (Marvel and DC), away from under- ground comix (Zap, Weirdo), and even from ground-level comics publishers (Fantagraphics, Dark Horse, Tundra), Sim is one working in opposition to many. In 1984 he wrote, "You have to understand that doing a comic book for seven years with no one else assisting in the direction of it becomes a very intense kind of self-therapy" (Swords 6: 30).
