From Disney to Disaster: the Disney Corporation’S Involvement in the Creation of Celebrity Trainwrecks
From Disney to Disaster: The Disney Corporation’s Involvement in the Creation of Celebrity Trainwrecks BY Kelsey N. Reese Spring 2021 WMNST 492W: Senior Capstone Seminar Dr. Jill Wood Reese 2 INTRODUCTION The popularized phrase “celebrity trainwreck” has taken off in the last ten years, and the phrase actively evokes specified images (Doyle, 2017). These images usually depict young women hounded by paparazzi cameras that are most likely drunk or high and half naked after a wild night of partying (Doyle, 2017). These girls then become the emblem of celebrity, bad girl femininity (Doyle, 2017; Kiefer, 2016). The trainwreck is always a woman and is usually subject to extra attention in the limelight (Doyle, 2017). Trainwrecks are in demand; almost everything they do becomes front page news, especially if their actions are seen as scandalous, defamatory, or insane. The exponential growth of the internet in the early 2000s created new avenues of interest in celebrity life, including that of social media, gossip blogs, online tabloids, and collections of paparazzi snapshots (Hamad & Taylor, 2015; Mercer, 2013). What resulted was 24/7 media access into the trainwreck’s life and their long line of outrageous, commiserable actions (Doyle, 2017). Kristy Fairclough coined the term trainwreck in 2008 as a way to describe young, wild female celebrities who exemplify the ‘good girl gone bad’ image (Fairclough, 2008; Goodin-Smith, 2014). While the coining of the term is rather recent, the trainwreck image itself is not; in their book titled Trainwreck, Jude Ellison Doyle postulates that the trainwreck classification dates back to feminism’s first wave with Mary Wollstonecraft (Anand, 2018; Doyle, 2017). -
Pledge DRAKE's TAKE: FAREWELL! by DRAKE VORDERSTRASSE, PRESIDENT
The Pledge DRAKE'S TAKE: FAREWELL! BY DRAKE VORDERSTRASSE, PRESIDENT During their term, the 2019-2020 Nebraska FBLA State Officers have SPRING 2020 had the chance to lead our organization in the discovery of a world of opportunity. From Omaha to San Antonio and from Denver to Kearney, our state has left a memorable trail for us to reflect upon as the FBLA membership year begins to draw to a close. nebraskafbla.org Jency, our State Parliamentarian, never failed to make everyone on the @NebraskaFBLA team feel like a Star. She has been a true friend to each member of the Nebraska FBLA officer team, but still found a way to keep us all organized when we got off-track during a meeting. @nebraskafbla Our Reporter, Sadie, ensured that each officer was well-informed of upcoming deadlines and of course, how far we were from completing our terms. Her service as a State Officer and a National Council Member is admirable, to say the least . Connor, our Treasurer, could always be relied on for a quick morale boost. Whether it be his exuberant energy, expansive knowledge of NEBRASKA FBLA 2019-2020 random trivia, or bizarre obsession with dinner rolls, Connor certainly A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITY set the pace for the rest of the officer team. Our State Secretary, Megan, is perhaps best known for her aptitude for sarcasm. Her passion for the March of Dimes, phenomenal work ethic, and questionable vernacular made Megan quite the triple threat as our Secretary. Thank you to Ethan, our State VP, for providing endless laughs with stories about his campaign booth antics. -

Ana Salvatore Envision a Rainbow of Glittering Lights and 20000 Starry
Time for Them to Fly? Ana Salvatore Envision a rainbow of glittering lights and 20,000 starry-eyed pre-teen girls screaming at the top of their lungs. I attended a Jonas Brothers concert last August and the energy of fans was mind- boggling. Bombarded with this teeny-bop fanaticism, my mind revisited a time when boy bands sent my hormones reeling. My heart spun back to my first concert ten summers ago starring the oh-so-dreamy Backstreet Boys. I was ten, and Nick Carter was a few years older. Just a few. But he was beautiful. His beach-blonde hair had a tendency to look perfectly disheveled and his bright blue eyes had Cupid sending arrows through my heart. Among Nick’s many big-screen moments that night, there was one on-camera appearance that I remember vividly: singing “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” and dancing with slight indecency, he had me love struck. The Backstreet Boys engendered in me the same magical and feverish obsession that defines Jonas Brothers fans. As is characteristic of boy band worship, fans live and breathe anything and everything that emanates J-O-N-A-S. But where do these obsessive-compulsive personalities come from? On the surface, girls are attracted to the brothers’ image as a band: drool-worthy good looks, a unique, punk-infused-prep style, and an energetic stage presence. Lured by these dazzling visuals, fans deem the trio rock n’ roll eye-candy. “They’re perfect, everything about them,” raves my fourteen year old sister. Encompassing this perceived perfection, however, is a much larger force of attraction: the two-dimensionality of it. -

‘A CHRISTMAS FOR THE BOOKS’ Cast Bios CHELSEA KANE (Joanna Moret) – Chelsea Kane has been acting professionally since the age of nine when she landed the role of Young Kim in the national Broadway tour of Showboat. Kane most recently starred as Riley on Freeform’s long-running hit show, “Baby Daddy,” which won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Cable TV Comedy in 2017. Kane also starred in the original TV movies “Lovestruck” and “#Popfan,” and as Meredith in the theatrical release of Bratz. She enjoyed a recurring role on the final season of The CW’s “One Tree Hill” and was a fan favorite on season 12 of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars,” finishing as one of the three finalists. Kane was a series lead on Disney’s “Jonas” and the voice of Bea Goldfishberg in their animated series, “Fish Hooks.” In addition to voicing roles in Adult Swim's “Hot Streets” and “Rick and Morty,” Kane loves bringing life to Pow in the new Netflix series “Trolls.” ### DREW SEELEY (Ted Dinrise) – Drew Seeley grew up in Toronto where he first fell in love with performing. At age 11, he was cast in Hal Prince’s revival of Showboat and stayed with the production for a year. Two years later, he got his first guitar, began writing songs, and hasn’t looked back since. In 2005, Seeley started working with producer Ray Cham and together they wrote “Getcha Head in the Game” for Disney’s quadruple platinum “High School Musical” soundtrack. This garnered them an Emmy nomination in the Best Original Song and Lyrics category. -
