Introduction: Athletic Scholarships and You

With all the athletic scholarships handed out each year, how can my son or daughter get one?

That’s a question you might be asking. That’s the question I asked three years ago when my twin sons were high school juniors, excelling in baseball.

So I embarked on a journey to get an answer. I entered a world I knew nothing about and learned a lot along the way. In the end, both of my sons were able to receive a fully paid education at the school of their choice, but it did not happen the way we had expected.

There’s a lot to watch out for, and you could end up spending a huge amount of money needlessly. In these pages, you’ll get an education in the recruiting process, and you’ll avoid the pitfalls that many parents and student-athletes fall into.

You will learn how to get your son or daughter recruited, and you will take the steps to make it happen. If you follow the Recruit Me process, less than a month from today college coaches will begin contacting your student-athlete. Recruiting will begin.

You’ll save time, money and energy by following the process I’ll guide you through. You could hire a service or consultant, but in most cases there is no need to pay them thousands of dollars to get your child recruited. At a fraction of the cost, you can do most everything these services do – if you’re willing to do the work.

The Recruit Me System I’ll teach you is simple – but not easy or trivial. You’ll have work to do. But I don’t believe in complex processes, and you certainly don’t need one either. You just need the dedication and commitment to follow the simple steps that I’ll teach you.

Don’t Fall for the Myths About Athletic Scholarships

How can I find out what’s really important in going after athletic scholarships?

As I went through the recruiting process, I found out that there are a lot of myths. Parents like you and me, and kids like ours believe certain things that are not true, and as a result they miss the chance to receive an athletic scholarship at the school of their choice.

My goal is to help you cut through the myths and focus on what is true and important.

Myth #1: If my child is good enough, the college coaches will find him or her.

Truth: A very small percentage of high school student-athletes receive scholarships because the coach “happened to find him or her.” Only the top-line elite athletes—the top 100 or so nationally—receive enough national media recognition that they are automatically recruited without having to make an effort.

The other 99%+ have to take the initiative to contact the schools where they have an interest. Most schools’ recruiting budgets are small, and coaches rely on you to contact them first. They don’t have the time or budget to travel around the country to see your child compete. Videos, stats, references and the like become key tools for the coach in the recruiting and evaluating process.

You might think that it’s too self-promoting to make the initial contact with a coach and to “market” your child. However, this is the norm. If you don’t do it, other student-athletes will get the scholarship because they and their parents will have made the effort and received the attention. Coaches these days expect you to do this. It is an accepted practice.

Myth #2: If my child is talented, the coach can get him or her into the school despite poor grades.

Truth: Poor grades shut off a coach’s interest more quickly than anything else. Schools have minimum academic requirements and coaches usually cannot get around those minimums. They would rather pursue the student-athlete with comparable abilities but with higher grades and SAT’s. It’s a better investment of their time. So, be sure to emphasize to your child that poor grades can wipe out their ability to get an athletic scholarship. If they can’t get into the school, they can’t get on the team.

Myth #3: I can trust everything the coaches say and promise during the recruiting process.

Truth: Coaches realize that not all recruits will choose that college. Therefore, the coaches must over-recruit. They have a tendency to over- promise and overstate, too, and the reality once you enroll is not always what was presented. Be careful. Ask questions. Try to get to know the coach’s character. Check into the coach by talking with friends who may know him or her. Find out about his or her reputation. If you can, talk with current athletes on the team to get their take.

Myth #4: We can wait until my child’s senior year to look for athletic scholarships.

Truth: The school selection process can take a year or more, so start early. Begin when your son or daughter is in his or her freshman sophomore year. Begin gathering information about schools and programs. Make initial contact, and then begin sending stats after competing at the Varsity or club level. You should definitely start the process no later than the junior year. The coach is under certain restrictions on when he can contact your son or daughter and how he does the recruiting. See the NCAA Recruiting Rules (Appendix D) and NAIA Recruiting and Eligibility Rules (Appendix F) that I’ve included. Also, see the lists of NCAA Member Institutions (Appendix E) and NAIA Member Institutions (Appendix G).

Myth #5: Most athletic scholarships are full rides.

Truth: It is just the opposite. It is very rare that your child, or any child, will be offered a full athletic scholarship at any school. Coaches have limited scholarships as regulated by the NCAA. They try to stretch their scholarship dollars just as you try to stretch your education dollars. Your child will likely be offered either room and board, tuition, or books, or some combination of these. Be prepared to pay some money at any school where you are offered a scholarship. It will likely only be a partial scholarship. That’s when the tough decision comes as to which school to choose.

Myth #6: My high school coach - or guidance counselor - will get me a scholarship.

Truth: Few high school coaches or counselors have either the time or the knowledge to take charge of your recruiting. They might have a few contacts at colleges that they can alert to their exceptional athletes, but you’ll need more than just a few colleges looking at you if you want the best chance of receiving a scholarship. You need to be talking to many dozens of coaches.

Myth #7: The only colleges worth considering are Division I schools.

Truth: You should also be considering Division II, Division III (non- athletic financial aid) and even NAIA schools if you want your best chance at a scholarship and if you want your best chance at getting to play once recruited.

Myth #8: I have to be the best player on my team to get any athletic financial aid.

Truth: Even if you’re not a national superstar already being recruited, an accomplished, talented athlete has a great chance of being recruited. Often athletes who don’t reach that “blue chip” status get lost in the recruiting process unless they market themselves. Most colleges don’t have the budget for high volume recruiting efforts. If they don’t know you exist, they can’t recruit you!

A Note to Parents

Let’s talk about your involvement as a parent in the recruiting process.

You must commit time to this.

Your son or daughter has his or her hands full with academics and athletics. It is important that they do their best in these two areas, because their ability to get scholarship offers depends on it.

You need to take the lead in contacting schools, writing letters, responding to coaches’ inquiries and tracking the communications. It’s a big job, and will get complex as more and more coaches respond.

This can be overwhelming for your student-athlete, so they will need your help and guidance – and organization. When coaches start to write and call them, your son or daughter can get stars in their eyes and get consumed by the attention.

Keep them on task and don’t let them get sidetracked from their primary responsibilities: school and athletics.

Parents, let me say few words about scholarships. Your child may have an interest in schools that do not offer athletic scholarships but have a strong recruiting program. Also, some schools may initiate contact but do not offer scholarships. For instance, Ivy League schools do not offer athletic scholarships, and neither do small, Division III schools. However, many of the non-scholarship schools are some of the best academic institutions in the nation.

The good news is that schools that do not offer athletic scholarships usually offer other forms of financial aid, such as academic scholarships, grants, and loans. If your student is really interested in a school that doesn’t offer athletic scholarships, check with that school and find out what other avenues are available. It is conceivable that they may be able to offer a financial aid package where you can pay less for the education than you would with a partial athletic scholarship at another school.

In fact, even if your student does receive athletic scholarship offers, you should make sure you also pursue those other financial aid options.

The recruiting and school selection process is more than pursuing the goal of getting a scholarship. You ultimately want your child to choose a school where they can compete and where they can get the best education—for the best price.

Step 1: Select The Right Schools to Contact

This can be a fun process as you sit down with your son or daughter and let him or her dream a little. I would bet that you already have your top 3-4 schools you’d like your child to consider, but remember that this is their choice. While you should present the benefits of the schools you have in mind, your top schools are merely “schools on the list” as far as your son or daughter is concerned.

Ask questions, such as:

9 Do you want to stay in-state? 9 Do you want to go to a large or small school? 9 What part of the country? 9 How tough academically do you want the school to be? 9 What are you interested in studying? 9 What Conference do you want to compete in? 9 Any favorite schools? 9 What level – NCAA Division I, II, III; NAIA? 9 How about the reputation and quality of the team? 9 Does cost matter?

These are just some of the questions you’ll want to ask your son or daughter. You’ll get a good picture of where they are at. You may even find out that they have not given it much thought. That’s not unusual, so don’t worry. My sons never thought for a moment that they’d be at the school where they are now. (They both ended up at the same place).

By asking preliminary questions like this, you’ll narrow down the field of possibilities. For instance, there’s no sense contacting an out of state school if your child wants to stay close to home. These preferences will probably change over time, but this is a starting point.

How many?

How many schools should we contact? I recommend at least 20-25, but preferably 40-50. This is where your insight comes in. Your son or daughter’s world of reference is probably small, so they’ll only think of a few schools. However, you will have some ideas of where you want them to check besides. Write to those schools in addition to the ones he or she selects. You never know what will happen, and you want to have a number of options open months down the road when it is time to make the decision.

Gathering information for your letter. You’ll need the names of the coaches and addresses of the schools on the list. I recommend that you go to each school’s website to find out about their programs. This is not only a good way to find out the name and address of the coaches, but an excellent way to research the school and your sport at that school. Since the school’s site will be updated regularly, you can almost be certain that the information is up to date.

Free college directory. The first information source I’ll recommend is free. The University of Texas at Austin maintains a directory of all accredited US institutions. It’s not perfect because the directory doesn’t contain the actual coach/contact info – just links to each school’s website where you can find the contact info. You can use it by going to: http://www.utexas.edu/world/univ/alpha/

This will be an alphabetical listing by school and by state, and each school’s name is a hyperlink to the school’s website. See the screenshot on the next page. All you have to do is “click” on any institution’s name and you’ll be taken to their main website, where you can then search out the information on the athletic program and coach contact details.

Note: For those of you who like to print and mark up your lists, I’ve included the current alphabetical list as Appendix H. It will help you do a quick visual scan of US schools to consider. When you’re ready to get the up-to-date contact information for the schools and coaches you’re ready to write to, you can go online, visit the UTexas website and click on each candidate school’s live link.

U.S. Universities List

They also provide the list Organized by State, if you’d find that easier to browse. I think you’ll find this free site a useful starting point, even though you do have to click through to the colleges’ own websites to get their contact and athletic program information.

Now for a power tool that makes this easier. I want to tell you about a much more convenient tool. It isn’t free, but it’s so inexpensive (less than $20) and it will save you so much time that I think it’s worth considering. You don’t have to use it, but you’ll be glad if you do.

College Coaches Online maintains an up-to-date directory of the over 1300 NCAA and NAIA colleges, their coaches, their sports and divisions, coach contact information, and even their cost of tuition. This database is the best, most accurate and most up-to-date registry of college and coach information available anywhere. In fact, NCAA licenses the College Coaches Online database for coach contact information, rather than attempting to maintain their own. It’s that good.

Here’s what I like about it. You can use the College Coaches Online Search to identify NCAA and NAIA schools that match your criteria. In fact, you can search for colleges by your specific needs: location, size, tuition costs, sport, division, and your academics (grades, class rank, SAT/ACT), and within seconds you’ll be given a list of schools that fit. The list will include the coaches’ names, addresses, emails and phone numbers.

Let me give you an example. Let’s say you’re a soccer player, but you want only colleges in the Northeast whose men’s soccer team competes in NCAA Division I. You also want a larger school with enrollment of over 10,000 students, whose tuition costs under $15,000. Finally, they have to accept students with a 3.0 GPA. You choose all these criteria in the College Coaches Online Search, and hit Find Colleges.

Results: Within seconds you get a list of every college fitting your criteria. They give you each coach’s name, address, email address, phone number, academic rating, and links to the school’s main web page and athletic department web page. You can click on the links to read about the school and the team and decide if the school would be a good fit for you.

Step 2: Write a Great Cover Letter

The next process will take you through the steps to writing the letter to the coaches. Once you have the basic letter written, this will be your model for custom letters you send to most schools.

1. Write your letter.

The key to this letter can be summed up in one word: BRIEF. The goal is not to share your son or daughter’s life story and all their great athletic achievements. That will come later. A long letter will turn off the coach quickly. He’s only going to read the first page anyway.

Therefore…

The letter should only be one page long. Every word counts. This is an introduction to your student-athlete. This is an attention-grabber so the coach will be interested in looking further. The one other sheet you’ll be including with the letter will get into more detail.

This all makes sense, doesn’t it? You’d be surprised, though, the number of parents or student-athletes who write a multi-page letter that never gets read. Make a good first impression by keeping the letter short and interesting.

Remember these tips as you write:

• You can’t just write whatever comes to your mind. In fact, you really need to choose your words carefully and communicate key elements that will get the coach’s attention. AND get his response.

• You need to be truthful and accurate, and don’t inflate your accomplishments. Effectively communicate your successes that present you in the best light.

• You must communicate the kinds of things that will get the coach’s interest and want to know more about you—enough that he writes back.

The Letter Writing Process Flow

This is a diagram of your letter writing process. I want you to understand intuitively what should be in each section of your one-page letter. I’ll elaborate in the pages following the diagram.

Who, what, where and when Introduce yourself and your intentions with a one-sentence

Athletic abilities Briefly tell about three or four of your athletic accomplishments and impressive stats from your most recent season. If you have participated in or received honors in other sports, mention them, but do not include highlights.

Personal Why do you enjoy competing in your sport? This is one, inspiring sentence from your heart.

Currently What are you doing currently in your sport? For instance,

you may be in season or playing on an off-season club team. You may be taking lessons of some kind. You may be planning to go to a summer camp in your sport. In addition, mention academics by giving your grade point average, SAT scores, or other academic achievements.

How? How will you benefit the team you are writing to? What will

you bring to the program with your abilities, skills, character and work ethic?

In the following pages are three sample letters, one of which was actually used by one of my sons three years ago. Before we turn to those, let me elaborate on what you want to say in the letter. (The letter, by the way, should be about five short paragraphs).

The following instructions are for your son or daughter as they write the letter, with your help. In fact, I’ll be speaking directly to your son or daughter from this point, even if you are the one leading and administrating the process.

Let’s get started…

A. Who, what, where and when. Introduce yourself and your intentions with a one-sentence opening paragraph, such as: I am a junior in High School and I am interested in competing at Penn State in 2005. Here’s what my son wrote in his opening paragraph:

I have an interest in playing baseball for Ohio State next year.

B. Athletic abilities. Briefly tell about three or four of your athletic accomplishments and impressive stats from your most recent season. If you have participate in or received honors in other sports, mention them, but do not include highlights. He’s what my son wrote in this paragraph:

Because of my athletic abilities, I have been used as an all- around player. This summer, I played catcher and first base in addition to pitching. We played a 93-game schedule and traveled throughout several Western States. I finished 4-3 and had a batting average of .322.

C. Personal. Why do you enjoy competing in your sport? This is one, inspiring sentence from your heart. My son’s line was not all that inspiring, but I’ll let you see it anyway. He wrote:

I love baseball and because of the weather here, I can compete and condition year-round.

D. Currently. What are you doing currently in your sport? For instance, you may be in season or playing on an off-season club team. You may be taking lessons of some kind. You may be planning to go to a summer camp in your sport. In addition, mention academics by giving your

Remember, this must be a one-page letter. That’s not optional. If it is more than a page, keep cutting until it is one page. I think you’ll be pleased when you’re done, because you’ll have a hard-hitting letter with a lot of substance and no fluff.

Once you finish the letter, have a couple of people read it and suggest some edits. This is not intended to be a long process, but it’s good to get a second opinion before you send it out. Remember that “first impression” saying?

A note about the envelope. Personalize it to the coach by name. Every school has a website, so you can easily get the coach’s name. If you have good handwriting, then handwrite the envelope.

Now take a look at the sample letters on the following pages, and then write your own.

After you’ve written your letter: How will the coach respond?

If you’ve written a letter that gets a coach’s interest, then he or she will usually respond by mail. Within a couple weeks, you should receive a questionnaire to complete. This questionnaire will have you include many more details about you, your academics and your athletics.

If you do not get a response from a coach within two weeks, then I recommend you call them and ask for a Player Questionnaire to complete.

Do NOT assume that the coach isn’t interested just because he or she hasn’t contacted you yet. Coaches are VERY BUSY, but they want to talk with good prospects. Help them out where you are concerned.

For years, I have been one of the top players in my age group. In June, I pitched two scoreless, no-hit innings at the Team One West Regional Showcase. Because of my athletic abilities, I have been used as an all-around player.

I love baseball and because of the weather here, I compete and condition year-round. Competing at the championship level is something I want to do year after year.

This summer, I played catcher and first base in addition to pitching. We played a 44-game schedule and traveled throughout several Western States. I finished 4-3 and had a batting average of .322. Right now, I am playing on a high school travel team that competes against Junior Colleges and Scout teams in Arizona.

I am looking for a winning college baseball program where I can use my skills. I have kept on top of my grades, maintaining a 4.0+ GPA. I would bring to the Ohio State program strong abilities as a pitcher and position player, a quality work ethic and a willingness to spend the time to improve.

Last year, I was a starter for our Varsity team, and averaged 21.4 points and 7.5 rebounds per game per game. In addition, I was named second team All-League, helping lead our team to second place in League and the third round in the State playoffs. I have maintained a 3.0 GPA in my first two years.

Basketball has been my favorite sport since fifth grade and I love competing year-round. I am looking forward to this season more than any other, because we have a shot at reaching the State Final Four. I am excited about that!

I have just come off a good summer season, having played in 24 games over two months, with some traveling to some tournaments around the state. I averaged 19.8 points per game, and started most of the games.

Step 3: Create Your One-Sheet Profile

Now that you’ve written your letter, you will use it as a model for the letter you send to all schools – personalized to each school, of course. The next step is to create the one-sheet “profile” which tells the coach about your abilities and achievements. This is really a resume. It may be the first one you’ve ever written, but it is probably the most important piece you will send a coach. The profile will either attract the coach or cause him to set it aside.

On the next page is a sample of what your profile can look like.

The profile is broken up into 10 sections. You can create this profile by using Microsoft Word or another word processor. Each section can be a separate text box. Referring to the sample on the following page, let’s take a look at what to include in each section.

Section 1: Name

Section 2: A short headline that jumps off the page, communicating something unique and impressive about you. An example would be: 87 MPH fastball and 3.6 GPA. That will get the coach’s attention and cause him to read further.

Section 3: Your sport; your position

Section 4: You and your family. Include the basics about yourself. Information will include:

Section 6: Physical: Height, weight, speed, strength (if data available), dominant hand, other sports you compete in.

Section 7: A narrative summary of your general strengths, as well as team and league information. Also, mention other sports that you compete in.

Section 8: A narrative of specific stats and achievements. This is where you brag about yourself, telling the coach about everything you do well and backing it up with the stats.

Section 9: Your potential. What will you expect to achieve in the coming year? This is a good spot for a quote from a coach. It is much easier for your coach to applaud you and project your future success than you can. It is also a stronger comment when your coach is validating your potential.

Section 10: Photo. As you can see in the sample on the previous page, I encourage you to include a photo of yourself. Either scan it in, or glue a wallet photo to that spot. Do not use a photo of you in uniform or in competition. A photo of you in street clothes is best.

The sample is just a suggestion. You can change the layout of the page to whatever suits you, but remember to keep it to a single page.

Once you complete your profile, you are ready to mail to the schools. These are the only two pieces of paper you want to send. They tell the coach all he or she will need to know in order to proceed further.

Step 4: Build Your Own Questionnaire

So what happens when a coach receives your letter and profile? If they are interested, they will send you a questionnaire. This is where you tell them everything about yourself, and they’ll certainly know whether they want to continue the recruiting process with you.

Every questionnaire you receive will be different. You will go crazy if you have to fill out a different one for dozens of schools. A better way is to create your own completed ONE-PAGE questionnaire that you can use to respond to any coach. This questionnaire will have all the information that any coach will ask for. When their questionnaire arrives, simply staple your completed one to their questionnaire and send both in. You’ve just saved 15-30 minutes for EACH school. That’s a huge time savings when you’re interacting with dozens of schools.

How will you know what information to include? Much of the information is standard no matter what sport you are in. You can see what I mean by the sample that follows. The questionnaire is divided into four areas: (1) Personal information, (2) Family information, (3) Academic information, and (4) Athletic information (for one sport only).

The best way for me to explain specifically what to include is to list it all here. You can print out this list and fill in your student-athlete information by hand, then build your detailed questionnaire from that. Refer to the example on the next page if you get lost. This is a simple process, but explaining it may make it appear complex.

You should build this questionnaire quickly after you have sent out your first letters, because within a week or two, you will receive responses from those letters. The responses will be in the form of blank questionnaires. The faster you can turn them around, attached to your completed questionnaire, the better.

NOTE: When you send your questionnaire, it’s a good idea to also send your season schedule, whether it is your current high school or club team schedule. Also, every time you enter a new season, send your schedule as an update to the coaches. This will give the coaches an opportunity to see you play if they are in the vicinity where you are competing. You never know when they’ll be nearby looking at prospects.

Feeling Overwhelmed? Right now, you might feel overwhelmed, having to write your letter, your profile and your questionnaire. But, let me assure you, you have the hardest work behind you. These three documents you have created (The Letter, the Profile, and the Questionnaire) are the basis for most of the written communication you will make with the coaches.

Step 5: Track Your Communications

Gentlemen, start your engines. The volley of communications will now begin. You’ve sent out letters and profiles to dozens of coaches, and within a few weeks you’ll be receiving questionnaires in return. You’ll be responding to these.

It can all get out of control if you don’t adopt a good journaling and tracking system from the start. Besides the written communications, your student-athlete may begin receiving phone calls, too, adding to the number of communications to keep track of. You want to track dates of communications, who you wrote or talked with, and any notes you want to make about the interactions. Don’t think you can get by with a stack of Post-It notes or a pile of scribbled papers. You will be interacting with dozens of schools, and if you aren’t careful, they’ll all begin to blur together. So I’m warning you in advance: you need a good, organized system to keep track of all the steps and interactions. It’s the only way you’ll survive.

Make a chart. The easiest way to do this is to keep a chart on your computer. You can set this up as a Word Table, or something comparable. Perhaps an Excel table would work best for you. The point is to get set now to journal all the interactions with the dozens of coaches you’ll be communicating with. Whichever method you feel most comfortable with, get it ready now.

Check out the following sample table as you build your own. You should set your chart up in “landscape” (wide) mode so you’ll have more space for notes.

There should be 9 columns, with the following headings:

First, your interest level in particular schools changes as the process goes along. Second, some schools may contact you first – even though they weren’t on your list. You want to track these communications, too, as you may get interested as time goes along. Update this column regularly.

When the coach calls you. If a coach calls you, it usually means he or she has more than just a passing interest in you. Just as the coach wants to find out if you have an interest in the school, you want to find out what kind of interest the coach has in you. The first call will center on that subject. I recommend telling the coach you have an interest and that you need to find out more about the school and program. Keep all your options open for as long as possible. Since you’ve probably already been communicating by mail, the call is likely a follow-up to that.

Have your own questions ready. It is good to put a list of questions you want to ask the coaches by the phone so you can be ready to ask them. Remember, NCAA rules dictate that he can only call once a week, so get as much information as you can. Your parents may have some questions, too, so it is fine to have them talk with the coach, too. Take a look at Appendix B: What to Ask a Coach for some guidance on good questions to ask.

This is where the tracking sheet comes into play. If you have specific questions for specific coaches, then write them on the sheet so you have the questions easily available.

Often, coaches will call when you are not home, and your parents will talk with them. Since this counts as the one call per week, it is another reason to have your questions in writing near the phone. Then your parent can ask the questions even if you’re not there.

Write everything down. Take notes as you talk with the coach. With the number of schools you’ll be communicating with, you need to keep good written records. Transfer these notes into your tracking sheet before you forget the details.

Q: So, what do I say when I talk with a coach?

Let him know how you are doing, if you are competing at the time. Ask your questions about the program, the school, the team, the coaching staff. Ask him what the team’s needs are. What are the team’s strengths and weaknesses? You can ask him about his coaching style and coaching philosophy. Remember, just as much as he is recruiting you, you are recruiting a school. It is always good to have something to discuss.

At times, you will receive a call from a school you did not write to. They found out about you through a reference, perhaps through your high school coach. Or they saw you in competition. The call might surprise you at first, but be sure to keep the lines of communication open even though you did not initiate the contact. You never know where it will take you.

If a coach calls when you aren’t home, it is perfectly all right to call him or her back. In fact, the more you keep the communication going, the better. If you appear to lose interest in the school, they will lose interest in you and the calls will stop. Your goal is NOT to see how many calls you can receive, but it is to keep as many options open as possible. I cannot overemphasize the importance of that.

Step 6: Send One-Page Updates

You need to continue communicating with the coaches. After a certain date, depending on your sport, they are permitted to call you, and some will. They are permitted to call you no more often than once a week, but you are permitted to call them as often as you like.

If you stop communicating with the coaches, they will assume you’ve lost interest. Therefore, respond to every letter they write, even if you don’t have much interest in the school. That’s because you do not want to eliminate any schools until you’re close to making your decision. You’ll be surprised how many offers you thought would materialize never do, and a school that was not at the top of your list moves up.

You don’t have to return all the phone calls. You won’t have the time to do so, but you should put out an update after every season.

This update, which you should write at the conclusion of each High School season and club season, provides highlights of the season, updates your stats, and shows the coaches that you are still interested. You can also include your upcoming schedule if you are moving on to a club team during the off-season. This is much easier than sending custom letters to every school at various times. This is a uniform approach.

Q: What should my one-page update look like?

The one-page update, as you can see in the sample, is another opportunity to highlight your successes, and brings the coach current on your athletic and academic achievements. Remember to also send your next season’s schedule, if it’s coming soon. For instance, you might be competing on a club team after the high school season is over. Send that schedule.

I suggest using a narrative format, with bullet points for each thought. Include things like:

Know When and How To Use Video

I’ve heard a lot about sending a video of myself in competition. Is that a good idea? What’s the best way of getting that done?

Most coaches will not get a chance to see you compete in person. Therefore, a video can become very important. First of all, do not send a video unless the coach asks for one. Coaches receive dozens of videos a day or a week, and they will not watch them until they have a sincere interest in you. Unless they’ve started a file on you as a prospect they’re interested in, they won’t want to take the time or have the hassle of dealing with an unsolicited video.

That said, when a coach asks you for a video, then you better have one ready.

The video should be about 10 minutes and look like this:

1. Begin with a one-minute greeting, introducing yourself, where you are from, maybe a few words about your family, a few words about what you do in your sport, and also say unique that will cause the coach to remember you. Then give a brief overview of what is coming up on the video. It is good to write an outline or a script, and practice it several times. With my sons, we had to do 3-4 takes before we were happy with what we recorded.

2. Include some highlights in your competition. Some sparkling moments. The coach will be looking at your mechanics and style. If you are a position player in baseball or softball, include several shots of your hitting, fielding, throwing, running. If you’re a pitcher, include 5-6 pitches from various angles. If you’re a tennis player, some serves and other shots. If you’re a football player, some isolated blocks, tackles or runs.

3. Finally, for most sports, include several minutes of continuous footage. That way, you can be seen in action in the context of the game.

With today’s digital camcorder and computer editing technology, you may be able to produce the video yourself. It does not need to be a professional production. Coaches are not looking at video quality, but rather athletic quality. They can see it regardless of the quality of the video. If you are not able to produce the final video yourself, then I recommend hiring a wedding and event video producer. They have all the equipment to do the editing and duplicating

Choose the Right Camps and Showcases

Q: A lot of my friends are going to camps held at different colleges. Some are going to “showcases” where coaches show up to evaluate players. How important are these in getting recruited?

There is no substitute for a coach seeing you compete in person. That’s when you’ll get an honest evaluation and a good idea whether you will fit into the program. Camps and showcases can be excellent opportunities, but you can go broke attending them. You have to be selective, because they will run you anywhere from $300-$750 each, plus travel and expenses. You can’t afford too many, at that price.

Camps: Let’s talk about camps first. These are good recruiting tools for some schools and fundraisers for most schools. In most cases, you will pick up some good instruction, but that’s not your primary reason for attending. You want to show the coaches how well you perform, and you might get to know them on a personal level, too. If you end up going to their school, that helps.

Camps can last from one day to one week. At the multiple day camps, there are usually coaches from several schools there as instructors to handle the large number of athletes. That’s good, because you are seen by schools you may not have known anything about. You get to know coaches, and your interest level may shift to a school you may not have had an interest in. In addition, coaches from different levels are there, which also widens the opportunities.

A camp also helps you see how well you compete against better competition than you may face during the season. In most cases, the athletes who show up for the camps are usually from all over the country or region.

At a camp, there will be instruction time and competition. There is also a lot of interaction with coaches, which is far better than a weekly phone call or letter. You can get to know a lot about the coach, his or her abilities, and how good he or she is.

I recommend only going to a camp at the schools where you are very interested in attending. Or, a camp where the coach from a school you are interested in will be instructing. An exception would be to attend a camp where there are

Showcases: Regarding showcases, these are supposedly open only to “select” athletes. You have to be recommended, so they say, but I know for a fact that some of the showcases work off mailing lists, and will accept non- recommended athletes.

Our sons attended a showcase and that is where they were spotted by the coach of the school they are attending right now. So, for us, it was a good move. However, these showcases do not allow that much individual exposure because there are so many athletes there. For instance, at a baseball showcase, you may get 15 batting practice pitches, run the 60, take infield practice, and play in a couple of scrimmages (with few at bats). All this for a very steep cost, with hardly enough exposure to give coaches a chance to look at you in depth.

The advantage of a showcase is that there are a lot of coaches there, which is an excellent situation. If you are interested in a particular school, and you know the coach will be at the showcase, alert him or her in advance so you can be “looked at” during the showcase. The NCAA recruiting rules don’t allow coaches to talk with you at the showcases – but they can look.

Other: Keep in mind that another great way to get seen by coaches of schools you’re interested in is to let them know when you will be competing in their area. And that’s free.

Register with the NCAA Clearinghouse

You must register with the NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse. This process certifies you to be able to receive an athletic scholarship or practice or compete at the Division I or II levels. In other words, you must register to be able to compete! The best time to do that is after your junior year.

To register with the Clearinghouse, you must complete and sign the Student Release Form (SRF), which is found in the Guide for the College Bound Student Athlete. You send it to the Clearinghouse with a nominal fee. This SRF authorizes each high school you have attended to send the Clearinghouse your transcript, test scores, proof of graduation (once it occurs) and other necessary academic information. It also authorizes the Clearinghouse to send your academic information to all colleges that request your eligibility status.

You can also register online at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net. Select “Prospective Student-Athletes” and click on “Domestic Student Release Form” or “Foreign Student Release Form.” Complete the online SRF form and include your credit or debit card information to pay the fee.

After registering online, print both Copy 1 and Copy 2 of the transcript release form, sign them, and give both to your high-school counselor. Print a copy for yourself, too.

You can always check your status with the Clearinghouse online at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net or by calling 877-861-3003. This is a touch-tone automated service. You need to have your social security number and PIN number on hand. (You will select a PIN number when you complete the SRF).

You may be one of the best athletes in the area, but if you do not perform in the classroom, you will disqualify yourself from many schools. The coach won’t even look at you if you fall well below the standards at his college or university. He’d be wasting his time trying to recruit someone he couldn’t get admitted because of bad grades.

To increase your chances of an athletic scholarship, do yourself a favor: be a first-class student. Do your best. I think you know in your heart what “best” means for you. Excel in the classroom just as you excel as an athlete, and you will open up huge opportunities. With good grades and good SAT scores, you will beat out competitors with lesser grades and scores.

As an athlete, you have extra time pressures that most students don’t have to face. You have practices, personal workouts, road trips and competitions that cut into your time available for study. If you also have a job, your study time is very restricted.

But you also have an advantage over many other students. To rise to the level you’ve attained as a top athlete, you’ve already learned to discipline yourself, to follow a plan, and to press on even when you don’t really want to. That’s one of your advantages.

Now let me give you an additional advantage: a crash course on how to study, write reports, and take tests most effectively. Most students never think through their game plan on studying, writing, or even test-taking. They just assume that they know how it all works, since they’ve been in school since their earliest memories. They’re probably wrong. They don’t realize that there’s a way to significantly increase their performance academically, while requiring less time studying. That’s what I’m going to share with you now.

No two people study the same way, and there is little doubt that what works for one person may not work for another. However, there are some general techniques that seem to produce good results. No one would argue that every subject that you have to take is going to be so interesting that studying it is not work but pleasure. We can only wish.

Everyone is different, and for some students, studying and being motivated to learn comes naturally. If you are reading this page, it's likely that you are not one of them, but don't despair, there is hope! Your success in high school and college is dependent on your ability to study effectively and efficiently. The results of poor study skills are wasted time, frustration, and low or failing grades. It's your life, your time, and your future. All I can say, upon reflection of many years as a teacher, is that time is precious and not to be squandered, no matter what you believe right now.

The value of a schedule

Before you even begin to think about the process of studying, you must develop a schedule. If you don't have a

schedule or plan for studying, then you will not have any way of allocating your valuable time when the unexpected comes up. A good, well thought out schedule can be a lifesaver. It's up to you to learn how to develop a schedule that meets your needs, revise it if necessary, and most important, follow it.

A schedule saves time

All schedules should be made with the idea that they can be revised. A good schedule keeps you from wandering off course. A good schedule, if properly managed, assigns time where time is needed, but you've got to want to do it!

Making every hour count

A schedule should take into account every class, laboratory, lecture, social event, and other work in which you engage. There are givens such as classes and so on that have to be incorporated. You must focus on the other "free time" available and how you will use it. Make a weekly schedule and block off the 24 hour day in one hour increments. Indicate times for classes, labs, lectures, social, and work time. Also block off a period for sleeping each day. With what is left over, plan time for study. This gives you a rough road map of the time available. Of course, you can revise your schedule as circumstances warrant.

When to study

The problem of when to study is critical. A good rule of thumb is that studying should be carried out only when you are rested, alert, and have planned for it. Last minute studying just before a class is usually a waste of time.

Studying for lecture courses

If your study period is before the lecture class, be sure you have read all the assignments and made notes on what you don't understand. If the study period is after the lecture class,

review the notes you took during class while the information is still fresh.

Studying for recitation courses

For classes that require recitation, such as foreign language, be sure to schedule a study period just before the class. Use the time to practice. Sometimes, practice with others can help sharpen your skills in a before-class study period.

Don't be afraid to revise your schedule. Schedules are really plans for how you intend to use your time. If your schedule doesn't work, revise it. You must understand that your schedule is to help you develop good study habits. Once you have developed them, schedule building becomes easier.

The schedule you develop should guide you in how to allocate the available time in the most productive manner. Sticking to your schedule can be tough. Don't dribble away valuable time. Thinking skills

Everybody has thinking skills, but few use them effectively. Effective thinking skills cannot be studied, but must be built up over a period of time. Good thinkers see possibilities where others see only dead-ends. If you're not a good thinker, start now by developing habits that make you ask yourself questions as you read. Talk to other students who you feel are good thinkers. Ask them what it is they do when they think critically or creatively. Often times, you can pick up valuable insights to help you become a better thinker.

The SQ3R method

The SQ3R method has been a proven way to sharpen study skills. SQ3R stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review. Take a moment now and write SQ3R down. It is a good slogan to commit to memory to carry out an effective study strategy.

Survey - get the best overall picture of what you're going to study BEFORE you study it an any detail. It's like looking at a road map before going on a trip. If you don't know the territory, studying a map is the best way to begin.

Question - ask questions for learning. The important things to learn are usually answers to questions. Questions should lead to emphasis on the what, why, how, when, who and where of study content. Ask yourself questions as you read or study. As you answer them, you will help to make sense of the material and remember it more easily because the process will make an impression on you. Those things that make impressions are more meaningful, and therefore more easily remembered. Don't be afraid to write your questions in

the margins of textbooks, on lecture notes, or wherever it makes sense.

Read - Reading is NOT running your eyes over a textbook. When you read, read actively. Read to answer questions you have asked yourself or questions the instructor or author has asked. Always be alert to bold or italicized print. The authors intend that this material receive special emphasis. Also, when you read, be sure to read everything, including tables, graphs and illustrations. Often times tables, graphs and illustrations can convey an idea more powerfully than written text.

Recite - When you recite, you stop reading periodically to recall what you have read. Try to recall main headings, important ideas of concepts presented in bold or italicized type, and what graphs charts or illustrations indicate. Try to develop an overall concept of what you have read in your own words and thoughts. Try to connect things you have just read to things you already know. When you do this periodically, the chances are you will remember much more and be able to recall material for papers, essays and objective tests.

Review - A review is a survey of what you have covered. It is a review of what you are supposed to accomplish, not what you are going to do. Rereading is an important part of the review process. Reread with the idea that you are measuring what you have gained from the process. During review, it's a good time to go over notes you have taken to help clarify points you may have missed or don't understand. The best time to review is when you have just finished studying something. Don't wait until just before an examination to begin the review process. Before an examination, do a final review. If you manage your time, the final review can thought of as a "fine-tuning" of your knowledge of the material. Thousands of high school and college students have followed the SQ3R steps to achieve higher grades with less stress.

Reading

A primary means by which you acquire information is through reading. In college you're expected to do much more reading than in high school. Don't assume just because you're "read" the assignments that is the end of it. You must learn to read with a purpose. In studying, you may read the same assignment three or four times, each time with a different purpose. You must know before you begin reading what your purpose is, and read accordingly.

Getting the Main Idea

Getting the main idea in reading is central to effective studying. You must learn what the author's central idea is, and understand it in your own way. Every paragraph contains a main idea. Main ideas are perfect for outlining textbooks. Make it a habit to find the main idea in each paragraph you read.

Extracting Important Details

Extracting important details mean that you locate in your reading the basis for main ideas. There is usually one important detail associated with every main idea. The more important details you can identify, the easier it will be to review for examinations because you have made a link between an idea and information that supports it. The more links you can make between details and ideas, as well as ideas themselves, the more powerful will be the efforts of your study.

Don't Read Aloud to Yourself

Generally, reading aloud to yourself does not help you study more effectively. If you move your lips while you read, you're not reading efficiently. If you read aloud or move your lips while you're reading, you are reading slowly, so stop moving your lips. Try putting a finger over your lips. Your finger will remind you not to move your lips. Make an effort to read

faster and retain more - after a while, you'll be surprised how little effort it will take.

Taking Notes

Like reading, note-taking is a skill which must be learned and refined. Almost invariably, note taking, or the lack of it, is a constant deficiency in the study methods of many high school and college students. Learning the ingredients of good note taking is rather easy; applying them to your own situation depends on how serious you are in becoming a successful student.

Where to Keep Notes

You must learn to keep notes logically and legibly. Remember, if you can't read your own writing a few days after taking notes, they are of little use. By all accounts, the best place to keep notes is in a loose-leaf notebook. Use dividers to separate the different classes you take. Make it a habit of using your notebook to record ALL your notes. If you're caught without your notebook and need to take notes, always have a supply of loose-leaf paper with you. Insert your note papers into the notebook as soon as you can. Be sure to buy a good notebook, as it will get a lot of wear and tear.

Outlining Textbooks

First of all, don't underline. Use a highlighter. Experience has shown that text passages highlighted are more easily remembered than the same passages underlined. In outlining a text, don't just read along and highlight what seem to important words. That technique rarely works.

Taking Lecture Notes

Surveying, Questioning, Listening

Taking accurate and concise lecture notes is essential. Develop the habit of taking notes using appropriate methods

described earlier in the SQ3R technique. For example, when you listen to a lecture, formulate questions as you listen. Your main job in taking lecture notes is to be a good listener. To be a good listener, you must learn to focus and concentrate on the main points of the lecture. Get them down, and then later reorganize them in your own words. Once you have done this, you have set the stage for successful reviewing and revising.

Reviewing and Revising

As you prepare for examinations, tests, or other assessments, you should spend time reviewing and revising your lecture notes. Begin the process by reviewing your notes right after a lecture. If you wait too long, you may discover that the notes just don't make sense. Don't hesitate to revise your notes based on the review process.

Research Notes

Any form of note-taking that requires compilation of information by categories, rather than in narrative form is best done using index cards. You can sort, edit and arrange index cards to suit your particular study needs. The most important point in using cards is to indicate the correct reference or topic at the top of the card. Use the cards for study, review, to help organize information for papers, reports, or projects. An even better idea, if you have a personal computer, is to organize your categorical information in a database. Once you set it up, finding, updating and adding new information is quite easy. If you have a printer, you can print out your notes in a variety of ways.

Survey any objective examination to find out what types of questions are being asked. Surveying helps you to know what to expect.

Knowing the Ground Rules

Always read directions! Indicate your answers exactly the way the directions state. Make sure your answers are clear. Determine what the scoring rules for the test are and follow them to your advantage. For example, if wrong answers are penalized, don't guess unless you can reduce the choices to two.

Answering Easy Questions First

Answering easy (to you) questions first is the best strategy. If you stumble over difficult questions for too long a time, you may not be able to complete the exam.

Picking out Key Words

Objective examination questions usually contain one or more key words. A key word or group of words are those on which the truth or falsity of a statement hinges. Learn to spot the key words in the statement that define the meaning. If a statement contains two clauses, one of which is false, the whole statement is false. Usually, two-statement true-false questions are either both true or both false.

Reading Multiple-Choice Questions

Multiple choice questions are essentially true-false questions arranged in groups. Usually, only one alternative is correct. Your job is to pick the alternative that is more nearly true than the others. Read multiple-choice questions the same way as for true-false. Eliminate obvious false choices.

Reading Other Types of Questions

The methods used to answer true-false and multiple choice questions apply to matching questions as well. Always scan

the entire list of alternatives before matching any. As in the other types of questions, try to identify key words in each list and test them. Completion questions require you to provide a word or phrase. When you encounter completion questions, choose your words carefully. If you don't know the answer, give it your best guess, as often times such responses get at least partial credit.

Essay Examinations

Planning your time in answering essay questions is more important than in objective type tests. The general rule is not to get carried away on one or two questions to the extent that you cannot answer that other questions in the time allowed. Read through the entire examination first. Get a feel for the questions you are expected to answer. If the exam allows you to choose from a number of questions, be sure to number your answers exactly to match the questions.

When you follow directions for an essay exam, pay attention to the key words the instructor has included. Such words as "list," "describe," "compare and contrast," and "outline" have special meaning. Don't "write around" the question but answer it directly. If a question asks you to list something, don't write a narrative about it. Answering essay questions directly is always the best policy.

After scanning the list of questions to be answered, choose the ones you know most about. A good idea is to prepare an outline of your answers. The outline will help you remember important ideas and facts to be included in your response. Another technique is to do a "memory-dump." This technique is discussed in the last section of this guide, "Power Study Tips."

Good handwriting is an absolute essential. If your cursive writing is very hard to read, try printing instead. Most instructors value clear handwriting. Grammar, punctuation, and spelling also count. Well-written grammatically correct answers almost always receive higher

grades than poorly written grammatically incorrect answers, even though the answers themselves are the same.

Writing Themes and Reports

Reviewing the Topic

Students usually have some freedom to choose the subject of themes or reports. When you make this choice, be sure that the topic is acceptable to the teacher, and is as interesting to you as possible. Another consideration is that of availability of resource material. Your task is made much easier when there is a good amount of reference and resource material available.

Using Correct Punctuation and Grammar

As in writing essays questions, good grammar and punctuation are a must. Most students use word processors to write papers. Be sure to use the spell checker that almost all word processors have built in. Many word processors also have some sort of grammar checker. Learn to use a grammar checker, as it can point out serious flaws in your writing and help you become a better writer. Most grammar checkers explain the grammar rules that apply to the suggested corrections to your writing.

Gathering Materials Before You Write

Before you begin writing, assemble the materials you will need. Use index cards, notes, bibliographies, summaries, reports and reviews as part of your preparation process. Using index cards for references is an excellent way to organize your materials. Computer database programs can also help you classify and organize reference materials.

Preparing an Outline and Writing the Paper

Once you have your topic, have gathered and organized your materials, it is time to outline your paper. Put your outline on paper! Don't make the mistake of trying to keep everything in your head. Make your outline in the form of main headings or ideas with sub-headings fleshing out the flow of the paper. Using the outline as a guide begin writing begin by asking yourself what the paper is going to say and what conclusions you want to reach. Doing this ahead of time will help keep you focused and prevent you from straying from the purpose of the paper. Making up the outline as you go along almost always results in a less than satisfactory product. Writing is important in high school and is a key to success in college and in many professions. Become a good writer by writing, revising, and reviewing your work. Don't be afraid to ask other students to critique your work. Try to write in your own natural style, be aware that most good writers go through many revisions, and be prepared to do the same. Writing and test-taking are the end results of developing good study skills. There is no magic formula for success. If you follow the suggestions in this guide, apply them and think about them, you'll have taken a giant step toward becoming a successful student.

Power Studying Tips

The following tips have proven to be extremely powerful guides for organizing, thinking, studying, and learning in college. They represent the best advice of successful college students. They can also work for high school students.

Study Space

Tip: Your study space should be as quiet and comfortable as possible. Avoid studying in noisy places such as cafeterias, recreation rooms, or lounges.

Tip: When studying, keep a waste basket handy.

Study Habits

Tip: Begin study no less than 30-90 minutes after a meal.

Tip: Never study within 30 minutes of going to sleep.

Tip: Prioritize! Make a list of what you intend to study, prioritize the list, and stick to it!

Tip: If possible, study no more than 30-40 minutes at a stretch. Many students retain more by studying for short periods with breaks in between. It all depends on what you're trying to study, but generally, after a period of study, take a break.

Tip: Take study breaks away from your desk or where ever you are studying. Let the break be a time to think about other things. Use some break time to reflect, not constantly review what you have just studied.

The Classroom

Tip: Distractions in the classroom are deadly. To help avoid distractions, sit near the front of the class. You're less likely to miss something important, and there are far less distractions at the front than any other location.

Tip: Think! Thinking is one of the most important things you can do in class. If you just sit there passively, and not think, class can be deadly. Think about what the teacher is saying BEFORE writing down anything. Writing down each word is a WASTE OF TIME. Reorganize in your mind what the teacher says, and then write it down. This way you will be

connecting the teacher's words with HOW you think. If you do this, your notes will make a lot more sense later on.

Tip: Pay attention to the course outline or syllabus. Generally, important points and materials are referenced here and repeated. Don't be afraid to ask the teacher if there is something you don't understand. Most teachers will be glad to clarify for you.

Preparing for Class

Tip: Efficient students do not underline! Underlining is not a productive way to emphasize textbook material. It's best to use a highlighter.

Tip: Read the table of contents of your texts carefully. If the textbooks have chapter summaries, read them first! If you don't understand the material from the summaries, go back and highlight. Take notes on what you have highlighted and review your notes. Tip: Break study material into short segments of length dependent on its difficulty. Remember, concise notes are more powerful than copious notes. Think about the material! Then take notes on what you don't know or are not sure of.

Test Taking

Tip: For essay examinations, try the "memory dump" technique. If permitted, write down everything you've memorized - facts, names, dates, ideas, events, and so on BEFORE you do anything else. Sometimes reading through the essay questions can distract you from what you've studied. The "memory dump" technique requires that you write down everything possible BEFORE you begin writing essay answers. This way, you are less likely to forget something important.

Make Your Final School Choice Wisely

I have offers from several schools I like. How do I choose which to accept?

There is no formula for choosing your school. You can walk through the process I’ve explained, but it will ultimately come down to your choice. You will have to weigh and evaluate a lot of factors and variables. You might go through some tense times, there may be some heated conversations between parent and child, you’ll have to deal with pressure from coaches, financial issues will arise, and the list goes on.

Below is a checklist I’ve put together to help make the choice easier as it comes down to the end:

9 Net cost comparison. Take the total cost of the school and subtract all the financial aid offered.

9 Scholarship offer. If the school does offer athletic scholarships, how good is the offer you have received? This could be an indication of the coach’s commitment to you.

9 Academic quality of the school

9 Academic match: does the school offer majors in your areas of interest?

9 Quality of the program. Grade it from A to F

9 Coaching staff: coaching ability, integrity, character, reputation

9 Coach’s interest level in you. How much of an effort did the coach make in the recruiting process? Evaluate his or her interest level in you. (Consider: How often does he or she call you? Were you offered an official visit? Where does he or she say you will fit into the program?)

9 Potential for becoming a better athlete in the program

9 Potential for earning a starting position within the first two years (you want to go where you can play)

I’ve taken you through the mechanics of the recruiting process, but it would be impossible to cover all the dynamics in a short time like this. I hope I have been able to give you the tools necessary to wade through the recruiting waters. If you follow the steps I’ve given you, you will do fine.

I want to remind you: there is no substitute for good grades and quality performance. That’s what it will eventually come down to.

One of the most challenging things during this scholarship search process will be assessing your abilities against those with whom you are competing for a scholarship. You may be a star at your school or in your league, but you need to find out how that matches up with other student-athletes around the country. Many of them are stars, too.

You will need to come to terms with your abilities early on, and target the schools where you have the best chance of competing and receiving a scholarship. Be candid with coaches who are evaluating you. Ask them what they think of your abilities. Your feelings might be hurt in some cases, or in other cases you may be surprised to find that have underestimated your abilities. But this is vital information for you to have. You want to make sure you are targeting the right schools, and a big factor is your talent level.

When you have a pretty realistic assessment of your abilities, I recommend shooting for a couple schools above your level (in order to challenge you), a couple below (so you have something to fall back on) and the rest right in the ballpark.

What to Ask a Coach

You’re going to be talking with dozens of coaches, each of whom will want to put his or her institution and program in the best light to attract you. Here are some good questions on athletics and academics that will be of help as you talk with them.

Athletics

Describe your coaching style. All coaches have different coaching styles and use different techniques for motivation and discipline. It is to your benefit to ask this question to determine whether your learning style and the coach’s style would be a good fit.

What are your expectations for the upcoming year? Obviously, all coaches would like to see their programs succeed each year. By asking this question, you will learn the goals and objectives the coach has set forth to reach the final destination – a successful season.

Describe the walk-on process and the scholarship program. You will learn how the coach handles his/her walk-ons. Each coach and institution treats walk-ons differently. Also, the scholarship programs will vary to some degree.

What role will I play on your team? Many coaches will already have an idea of how they would like to utilize certain recruits. You will be able to find out where the coach sees you fitting in on his/her team and why.

What demands does this sport require physically and what time is required? It is important to know the physical demands that will be placed on you during your tenure as an athlete. Also, you need to know how much time is spent with this sport so you may manage your study time wisely.

How strong is my degree program? There are some institutions that have stronger programs than others. There are also those institutions that specialize in specific degree programs.

Does this major mix well with athletics? Some majors are more time consuming than others and may require labs or mandatory work outside of class hours. You need to know the demands that will be placed on you within your major, to know if you are spreading yourself to thin through participating in athletics.

What is your view on academics? Many coaches have different thoughts regarding athletics. It is important to know that the coach’s philosophy on academics will compliment yours.

What percentage of athletes graduates in four years? This will tell you about a coach’s commitment to academics. Also, the team grade point average is a good indicator of academic commitment.

College Life

What is a typical day for a student-athlete? You will learn a typical schedule that will include courses, practices, meal times, study times, etc. This will give you insight as to how to manage your time and assist you with needed adjustments.

What does the institution’s services entail? You will be informed of any study hall hours that may be required of you during your tenure. Also, this is a good time to ask about the availability of tutors.

What is the average class size? You will learn what type of attention you will be receiving as a student. Some larger institutions have large classes that tend to be taught by teaching assistants.

How would you describe the residence halls/campus housing and will I be required to line in campus housing as a student-athlete? Sometimes student-athlete housing is provided and included in the scholarship you are allotted. It is important to know this before enrolling with the

Financial Aid

What is the length of my scholarship and what type of scholarship is it? Most institutional scholarships are for only one year. Also, there are some scholarships that cover just tuition (or housing, or books) and others that cover housing, books, tuition, or full-ride scholarships.

Is there financial aid available for summer school? Some athletes prefer to simply take the necessary course hours to be eligible to play during the season. This could leave you with several credit hours that you may wish to pick up during the summer. However, you may need financial assistance in the summer, so ask whether or not your financial aid packages cover summer expenses.

Describe the different financial aid packages. It is important to know what your athletic scholarship entails. Also, it is important to know if you can supplement your athletic scholarship with other financial aid packages the institutions offers.

If I get seriously injured and I am unable to participate, what will happen to my scholarship? Institutions are not obligated to offer scholarships or financial aid past the term of the agreement. It is important to know what the institution’s commitment to injured athletes is.

May I be employed while receiving a scholarship? Find out if you can be employed while in season, or out of season. Also, find out if you can be employed during vacations without violating your scholarship

Because the Recruit-Me System takes you step-by-step through the recruiting process, we receive a lot of further questions from student-athletes and parents. Once you begin the recruiting process yourself, you will find this Q and A section helpful. You’ll have questions of your own, so you’ll be able to identify with some of these. If you have further questions, please e-mail me at [email protected] and I will do my best to answer you personally.

Q: Do college coaches typically call the student-athlete or do they go through their high school coach, and which call carries more weight?

A: Coaches should initially contact the student, although they may do some checking with your high school coaches. Their first sign of interest comes when they send you a questionnaire to complete. The first contact is not usually by phone. In fact, NCAA rules state that coaches are not allowed to call you until July 1 AFTER your junior year. I would encourage you, though, to call the coaches if they have not sent a questionnaire within three weeks after you send the initial letter and profile. You can call them at any time, and you can find out a lot of information that way. Taking the initiative is important.

Q: I play varsity doubles and have received all-state for 2 years, but it seems very hard to get noticed at the regional/national level in doubles. Any suggestions?

A: Your struggle is not an uncommon problem for most high school athletes. Even talented ones like yourself get overlooked. Most colleges’ recruiting budgets are limited, and the coaches cannot get out to see that many players. They rely on tournaments, showcases and camps to see large numbers of players at once. Only for exceptional prospects will a coach normally travel to see an individual game or match.

For these reasons, it is extremely important that you take the initiative to let college coaches know about you. Be aggressive in pursuing the schools where

Once you make contact with the coaches, you open the door for continued contact. They will write back if they see that you have the tools to play on their team. Your letter, player profile, completed questionnaire, video (if they ask for one), and regular updates are those tools.

If you sit back and wait for coaches to find you, it is likely not going to happen. That's the mistake most parents and athletes make. You'll miss the boat, because other athletes with your abilities (and less ability) are getting in line ahead of you by contacting the schools.

Q: What kind of grades in high school are acceptable in order to receive an athletic scholarship?

A: I cannot tell you how important it is to keep your grades up. If you cannot get into the school, the coach cannot get you on the team. The NCAA has standards for grades in order to be eligible for Intercollegiate Athletics, and they differ by Division. I’ve covered the specifics – which were changed in 2004 – in Appendix C: NCAA Recruiting Rules.

Q: My son did not receive a baseball scholarship, but wants to continue to play in college. Is it worth it, or is it only the scholarship kids that get to play?

A: Your son can definitely continue to play baseball even if he does not receive a scholarship. The coach may not see his talent until he gets there and tries out for the team. So much can happen during the course of the year. Players come and go, some do poorly while others bloom at some point during the year. If he makes the team, tell him to hang in there. Playing on the college level is a lot different, and he will have to determine how far he wants to go and how long he wants to play.

Q: My son Samuel is a basketball lover who plays the game excellently. He is a freshman now. We are doing all that we can to prepare him for the next level of basketball through various camps, etc. What help and guidance can you give?

A: First of all, let me say that I am happy that you are starting early in his high school career to prepare him for the recruiting process. Many parents and athletes wait until it is too late. I recommend starting no later than the junior year, but even earlier is better.

Without overloading you with details, here are a few things I would recommend to your son:

1. Keep your grades up. If you don't have the grades, you will eliminate yourself from many colleges. That's one of the biggest things that keeps student-athletes from getting being recruited. If you don't meet the school's academic standards, the coach can't touch you.

2. Choose your camps carefully. As you know, camps are expensive. Choose the ones that have good reputations and will have a lot of quality colleges represented. Once you narrow down your college choices, probably after your sophomore or junior year, consider attending a camp at one of your top choices.

3. Contact schools of interest now. Write your initial letter, just so the coaches can see your interest. They are not allowed to contact you at this point, so don't expect a response. But they will start a file on you. Continue to send them updates after each season.

I hope that helps in these early stages.

Q: My daughter's list of "best schools for her future" are very competitive (D- I); does your system will help her even to have a chance at one of them? She'll be a senior, is not too late to star the process now. She is a great student and athlete.

A: You want to have as many options as possible, so you should divide your prospective schools into three categories: (1) Programs right at your ability level; (2) Programs above your ability level, and (3) Programs that are below your ability level.

If you are only shooting for schools that will be a stretch, you are narrowing the possibility of being recruited and receiving a scholarship. Your ultimate

You should compile a list of 40-50 schools to contact. Your current "top list" may not be your top list when you get through the recruiting process. There are so many good schools and programs out there, most of which you are not familiar with right now. So keep your options open by contacting schools in all three of the above categories.

Q: What does it take to qualify to play for a college team? I know I have the ability.

A: The two things you need to focus on are academics and athletics. Both go hand in hand. You may have the ability to play at a major school, but if your grades do not qualify, you won't be recruited there.

As part of the Recruit-Me System, we have included an NCAA and NAIA Guide to help you go through their most important rules. That would be relevant in your case.

Q: Should we continue to send updated information to the entire list of schools that we sent to or only to those who’ve responded to us? And how often do we send updates? Can you give me examples of updates to send to the coaches?

A: I would send updates to all the schools you have initially written to, assuming you have interest in each of those schools. (One of my sons sent a letter to Penn State, even though he wasn’t interested in playing there. He is a Penn State fan and just wanted to get a letter from them so he could frame it and say he heard from Penn State!) If you send an update to schools you have not yet heard from, attach the Profile again so they have the basic information. Send an update after each season, whether it be high school or club. And, adding a cover letter is always good, too, just to stand out and add that personal touch. It shows you are truly interested. Open it with something like, "You

Q: I was supposed to graduate 4 years ago, but I dropped out and got my GED. I am a great long distance runner and a very good sprinter. I would like to walk on and start from there.

A: I suggest you go to the NCAA website (www.ncaa.org) and see the academic requirements explained there. From that point, if you want to pursue an athletic scholarship, Recruit-Me will take you step-by-step through the recruiting and scholarship process.

Q: I don’t know if I could get a scholarship. My team was 0-10 last season.

A: Just because your team had a bad season, I wouldn't be discouraged away from pursuing a scholarship. What matters most is your own play and stats. While it’s always nice to be on a winning team, if you're a stand-out player with good stats in a league of strong competitors, you can get a scholarship even if your team had a bad season. If you and your high school coach believe you can play well at the college level, you should go for it.

Q: I am graduating this month, but I still want to try for a football scholarship. What should I do, even though I am so late?

A: Here's our advice. You might go to a junior college while you begin the recruiting process for admission to a 4-year school for a year or so later. You can get good exposure and build your player skills and stats there, which will assist you in your football scholarship process. You'll also have another coach at an even higher level who can give you a reference and recommendation.

Q: My son’s coach wants to write him a letter of recommendation. How important is that in the recruiting process?

A: That’s good about your son's coach writing a letter of recommendation. It’s a plus! Strategically, it will be best to send it when you send your introductory

Q: I am not being recruiting because of my low ACT scores. What should I do?

A: As you have discovered, your academics are a big part in your ability to land a scholarship. If you are not being recruited because of your ACT scores, I would recommend spending a year or two at a Junior College to raise your grades and then pursuing a scholarship once you have the grades.

Q: When should I start the recruiting and scholarship process?

A: It is good to begin making contact with schools after your freshman year. You may not hear much from coaches until you are a junior, though, because that’s the class they really focus on. However, if you’ve already established a relationship through your letters, profile, questionnaire and updates, you will stand out in the coach’s mind. It is important that you send stats once you have varsity or club numbers.

Q: My son is good in more than one sport. Should he pursue a scholarship in each one, or focus on one sport?

A: If your son plays multiple sports and is talented in each, it would be wise to pursue recruiting in each of them. That is, in the ones he really wants to compete in at the college level. It keeps your options open. And, at some schools, he may have the chance to play two sports.

Q: How do I choose the right summer basketball camp where I can be recruited?

A: In choosing a basketball camp, it is best to find one where the schools you are interested in will be represented. Or ones where there will be many coaches there, so you will have a lot of exposure. The camps are expensive, so you need to choose wisely. Most schools use these as fundraisers for the program, so be

Q: I don’t live in the United States. Can I still get an athletic scholarship at a U.S. college?

A: International student-athletes (Canadians, European and other non-U.S. residents) have the same sports scholarship opportunities at U.S. colleges. However, because of distance, unless they take the initiative they have a very difficult time getting noticed by the college recruiters. The Recruit-Me System helps the International student-athlete deal with this distance drawback by teaching them how to proactively market themselves to the colleges they're interested in. There are special eligibility standards that International students must be aware of, documented in NCAA’s Guide to International Academic Standards for Athletics Eligibility (available online at NCAA’s website).

NCAA Recruiting Rules

Rules, rules, rules. The NCAA is the king of rules. But if you want to be recruited, you have to follow them. And so do the coaches who recruit you. We hear stories every year about schools who have been penalized for recruiting rules violations. This has cost schools millions of dollars in some cases, restrictions from post-season competition, loss of scholarships, and other serious sanctions. So, it is good to be familiar with the rules so you understand “the game” before you start.

General Recruiting Information

It all begins when you start ninth grade. That’s when you become a prospective student-athlete. And you become a recruited student-athlete at a college if a coach or representative of the athletic program (including a booster) contacts you or a family member about you attending that school and participating in athletics.

A key date to remember is September 1 of your junior year. That’s when coaches, faculty members and students can begin to contact you, and it may only be by letter at that point. We will look at key dates for phone calls in a few minutes. By the way, boosters are not allowed to write to you.

What exactly does “contact” mean? It can include: (1) providing you with an “official visit”, (2) placing more than one telephone call to you or family member, or (3) visiting you or a family member anywhere than on the college campus.

As stated officially on the NCAA website, “In addition to recruiting regulations, contacts may not be made by the school’s alumni, boosters or representatives of their athletic program.” That means no letters, phone calls or visits from boosters.

In addition, no cars or cash allowed! You or your family may not receive any inducements to encourage you to attend a certain school. These inducements include cash, clothing, cars, improper expenses, transportation, gifts or loans.

Telephone calls

Starting July 1 after your junior year, in all sports except football and basketball (see below), phone calls are permitted from faculty members and coaches. This is limited to one call per week, although you may call the coach as often as you like. This limit is waived at these times:

• During the five days leading up to your “official visit” to that college • On the day of a coach’s off-campus contact (visit) with you • On the initial date of signing the National Letter of Intent, through two days after the initial signing date.

Division I football. The coach may call you once during May of your junior year, then not again until September 1 of your senior year. He and his staff can call you as often as they wish 48 hours before and 48 hours after 7 am on the initial signing date of the National Letter of Intent and during a contact period. A “contact period” is a period of time designated by the NCAA, and varies by sport. Outside a contact period, a football coach may only phone you once per week.

Division I men’s basketball. A school’s coach can call you once during your March of your junior year. He can then call you once on or after June 21. Then he may call you up to three times during July, with no more than one call per week.

Division I women’s basketball. A school’s coach can call you after June 21 of your junior year, and then three times in July (but only once per week).

As mentioned earlier, you or your parents or legal guardian may call the coach at any time, and beginning July 1 you may do so on a toll-free number or collect. Student-athletes from the college may not make recruiting calls to you, but you can call them at your expense after July 1 following your junior year.

Contacts

Although you may receive letters from coaches during your junior year, coaches are not allowed to contact you in person until July 1 after your junior year. A “contact” is defined by the NCAA as any face-to-face meeting between a college coach and you or your parents, during which any of you say more than “hello”. A contact is also made when any face-to-face meeting is prearranged. In other words, you and the coach just “happen to run into each other” somewhere. In addition, if a coach shows up at your high school game or practice and says anything to you, that is a contact.

Why is the definition of “contact” so important? That’s because there is a limit of seven contacts or evaluations (see definition of “evaluation” below) during the academic year. No more than three of these can be in-person, off-campus contacts (such as home visits). So, as you can see, a coach has strict limitations. These contact limits are different for Division I football and basketball.

In football, the coach can contact you off-campus six times, although no more than one contact per week is permitted during a contact period (a “contact period” is defined a little later).

In basketball, coaches have five contacts or evaluations during the academic year. No more than three of these can be in-person, off- campus contacts. In men’s basketball, coaches may make one contact with you during April of your junior year.

Evaluations

An “evaluation” is defined by the NCAA as “any off-campus activity used to assess your academic qualifications or your athletics ability, including a visit to your high school (during which no contact occurs) or watching you practice or compete at any site.”

Evaluations and contacts are considered “recruiting opportunities” and are limited. In all sports except football and basketball, a school has a limit of seven recruiting opportunities during the academic year. Basketball has five. In football, a coach cannot evaluate you more than three times during the academic year. There are further restrictions that coaches must follow

Furthermore, in football, basketball, softball, women’s volleyball and men’s lacrosse, there are certain periods when a coach can contact you off the college campus and attend our practices or games to evaluate your athletic ability. For all other sports, contacts and evaluations can take place anytime except during a “dead period.” Yes, another term we will define shortly.

Official Visits

One of the most exciting things you can experience in your recruiting life is an “official visit.” This is when a coach invites you to come to visit their campus and pays your way. You can have one expense-paid (official) visit to a particular college campus. And you can have a total of five official visits altogether. Your first official visit can occur beginning opening day of your senior year of classes. (For Division I men’s basketball, you may have official visits beginning January 1 of your junior year).

If you are being recruited for more than one sport, this five-visit limit applies. Therefore, whether you are a one-sport athlete or multi-sport, do not use up your five visits too early. As you can see, there is strategy to all this.

There is a pre-requisite for making an official visit. You must first give the college our high school transcript and a score from a PSAT, SAT, PACT plus or ACT. If you are already registered with the NCAA Clearinghouse, a Division I school can get this information from the Clearinghouse.

Your official visit may not exceed 48 hours. This expense-paid trip can include round-trip transportation, and you (and your parents) may receive meals, lodging and complimentary admission to campus athletic events. You’ll have to sit in the general seating area—no press box or bench seats allowed. My sons would have appreciated the press box, because there was a snow storm at the football game on one of their trips. Many coaches will also have players from the team do some of the hosting.

The NCAA also has restrictions on what printed material the school can provide you with through the mail or on your official visit. You’ll gain a collection of

As you can see, coaches have a lot of rules to follow. The above information is provided as a summary and the NCAA can change these rules at any time. We recommend you go to the NCAA website and view the rules in the Guide for the College Bound Student-Athlete at the web address given in the next section below.

Eligibility

You have to meet certain academic requirements before you can be eligible to compete in intercollegiate athletics. This eligibility pertains to all athletes, regardless of whether you are seeking a scholarship or not. In other words, you have to meet the requirements before you can step on the field at all.

The NCAA has set up an Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse, which certifies the eligibility of a prospective student-athlete. You need to register with the Clearinghouse. You can go online to their website to start the process at http://www.ncaaclearinghouse.net. Fill out the online form, or you can call them directly at 1-877-262-1492, or from outside the U.S. at 319-337-1492. When you call, ask for a free copy of the publication Guide for the College- Bound Student-Athlete, which contains the registration forms and an informational brochure. You can also go online to view the Guide at http://www.ncaa.org/library/general/cbsa/.

The NCAA has established a standard for core courses that need to be completed in high school. This changes regularly, and you can go online to http://www.ncaaclearinghouse.net/ncaa/NCAA/general/index_general.html to view the current list. There is a menu in the left column and you chose “List of Approved Core Courses.” The site asks you to enter a six-digit code for your high school and you can then see which courses at your school will qualify to meet the core requirements. The site also lists courses which do NOT qualify as core courses. (If you do not know your high school’s 6-digit code, then you can use the “look up” capability on the site).

Division I Eligibility:

To be a qualifying student-athlete and be eligible to compete in intercollegiate athletics at the Division I level, if you enter on or after August 1, 2005:

1. You must graduate from high school.

2. Successfully complete a core curriculum of at least 14 academic course units as follows. (Note: For students entering college in 2008, that number increases to 16 core course units, with the number of units indicated in brackets below):

• English: 4 years [Same beginning 2008] • Natural or physical science (including at least on lab course if offered by the high school): 2 years [Same beginning 2008] • Mathematics (Algebra I or higher): 2 years [3 years beginning 2008] • Additional courses in English, math, or natural or physical science: 1 year [Same beginning 2008] • Social science: 2 years [Same beginning 2008] • Additional academic courses (in any of the above areas or foreign language, philosophy or non-doctrinal religion --such as comparative religion): 3 years [4 years beginning 2008]

3. Meet the standards of the following formula: have a core-course GPA (based on a 4.0 max) and a combined score on the SAT verbal and math sections or a sum score on the ACT based on the “qualifier index scale.” This scale is charted below. What’s it going to show you? Basically that if your core GPA is poor, your SAT and ACT scores must be higher for you to qualify.

Division II Eligibility

The eligibility requirements for a Division II school are as follows:

1. Graduate from high school.

2. Have a GPA of 2.0 or higher (based on a 4.0 scale) in a successfully completed core curriculum of at least 14 academic course units:

• English: 3 years • Math: 2 years (Algebra I or higher) • Natural or physical science incl 1 yr of lab): 2 years • Additional courses in English, math or natural or physical science: 2 years • Social science: 2 years • Additional academic courses (in any of the above areas or foreign language, or philosophy or nondoctrinal religion): 3 years

3. Have a minimum SAT score of 820 or a sum ACT score of 68.

There is “partial qualifier” status in Division II. You are eligible to practice, but not compete against other schools. You then have four seasons of eligibility remaining. You are also eligible to receive an athletic scholarship during the first year.

The requirements for a partial qualifier at a Division II school are as follows: You must graduate from high school and meet one of these requirements: (1) Minimum SAT or ACT scores indicated above, or (2) successful completion of the required core curriculum above, consisting of 14 core courses with a 2.00 GPA in the core.

Division III Eligibility:

There are no athletic scholarships at the Division III level. This is no reflection on the quality of those schools. Many Division III schools are ranked among the top schools in the nation. Eligibility for financial aid, practice and

A final note on Eligibility:

The standards we’ve discussed here are merely the minimum NCAA standards for athletic eligibility. The school may have tougher requirements, and your entrance requirements and admission are determined by them. Finally, the GED test may be used under certain conditions to satisfy the graduation requirement, but of course you will still need to meet that SAT and ACT test score standards.

Foreign Student Eligibility

Foreign student-athletes are also eligible for athletic scholarships at U.S. colleges, but the eligibility standards vary depending on the country. NCAA has a document that gives most of the details a foreign student-athlete will need, country by country: Guide to International Academic Standards for Athletics Eligibility. If you’ve never been enrolled as a full-time student in a university: You must meet minimum academic standards in order to be eligible (the ones that vary by country). You will also need a minimum score on the SAT or the ACT. Other tests, such as the TOEFL or the TWSE, are not accepted.

If you have been or are currently enrolled as a full-time student at a university in a foreign country: You will be considered a transfer student, and your eligibility will follow the normal NCAA Transfer Guide rules. As I said earlier, NCAA has LOTS of rules, and they publish almost all their rules online. Unfortunately, many student-athletes have difficulty finding the information they’re seeking just because there’s SO MUCH on the NCAA websites (there are at least 3 NCAA websites, all of which are undergoing redesign at this moment).

With that warning in advance, I want to advise you that there’s a wealth of information available online from NCAA. If you need to know specifics or answers to more unusual questions, you can probably find the answer on one of NCAA’s websites.

NCAA Member Institutions by Division

I’ve been asked what the differences are between the NCAA Divisions, especially where athletic scholarships are concerned. I’ve included NCAA’s definitions here, along with a table showing the composition of the NCAA (how many colleges there are in each Division).

Division I (377 Institutions)

Division I schools are the major collegiate athletic powers, with larger budgets, more elaborate facilities, and higher numbers of athletic scholarships. Division I member institutions have to sponsor at least seven sports for men and seven for women (or six for men and eight for women) with two team sports for each gender. Each playing season has to be represented by each gender as well. There are contest and participant minimums for each sport, as well as scheduling criteria. For sports other than football and basketball, Div. I schools must play 100% of the minimum number of contests against Div. I opponents -- anything over the minimum number of games has to be 50% Div. I. Men's and women's basketball teams have to play all but two games against Div. I teams, for men, they must play 1/3 of all their contests in the home arena.

Football: Schools that have football are classified as Div. I-A or I-AA (I-AAA schools don’t have intercollegiate football programs). • I-A football schools are usually fairly elaborate programs. Div. I-A teams have to meet minimum attendance requirements (17,000 people in attendance per home game, OR 20,000 average of all football games in the last four years or, 30,000 permanent seats in their stadium and average 17,000 per home game or 20,000 average of all football games in the last four years OR, be in a member conference in which at least six conference members sponsor football or more than half of football schools meet attendance criterion. • I-AA teams do not need to meet minimum attendance requirements. • I-AAA schools do not have intercollegiate football programs.

Athletic Scholarships: Div. I schools can offer athletic scholarships. They must meet minimum financial aid awards for their athletics program, and

I school cannot exceed. • I-AA schools are currently limited to a total of 85 players receiving athletic scholarships. For competitive reasons, and the fact that a student on partial scholarship counts fully against the total of 85, virtually all I-A schools that are not on NCAA probation give 85 full scholarships. The service academies—in this context, Army, Navy, and Air Force—are exempt from this rule, as all of their students receive full scholarships from the federal government. • I-AA schools are currently restricted to giving financial assistance amounting to 65 full scholarships. Unlike I-A schools, I-AA schools may freely give partial scholarships; they have no limit as to the number of players receiving assistance. However, competitive forces mean that a large majority of players in I-AA programs are on full scholarships.

Division II (309 Institutions)

Div. II schools have to sponsor at least four sports for men and four for women, with two team sports for each gender, and each playing season represented by each gender. There are contest and participant minimums for each sport, as well as scheduling criteria -- football and men's and women's basketball teams must play at least 50% of their games against Div. II or I-A or I-AA opponents. For sports other than football and basketball there are no scheduling requirements. There are not attendance requirements for football, or arena game requirements for basketball. Division II teams usually feature a number of local or in-state student-athletes. Traditional rivalries with regional institutions dominate schedules of many Division II athletics programs.

Athletic Scholarships: Div. II schools can offer athletic scholarships. There are maximum financial aid awards for each sport that a Div. II school must not exceed. Many Division II student-athletes pay for school through a combination of scholarship money, grants, student loans and employment earnings. Division II athletics programs are financed in the institution's budget like other academic departments on campus.

Division III (490 Institutions)

Div. III schools focus primarily on academics, offering athletics more as a means of recreation than as a major draw. They are typically smaller schools,

Div. III institutions have to sponsor at least five sports for men and five for women, with two team sports for each gender, and each playing season represented by each gender. There are minimum contest and participant minimums for each sport. Division III athletics departments place special importance on the impact of athletics on the participants rather than on the spectators. The student-athlete's experience is of paramount concern. Div. III athletics encourages participation by maximizing the number and variety of athletics opportunities available to students, placing primary emphasis on regional in-season and conference competition.

Athletic Scholarships: Div. III schools are not allowed to offer athletic scholarships. Their athletics feature student-athletes who receive no financial aid related to their athletic ability, and athletic departments are staffed and funded like any other department in the university.

NAIA Recruiting and Eligibility Rules

NAIA rules and regulations are a lot less complicated. Let’s get right into them.

Scholarships

While the NCAA controls the number of scholarships available per sport, the NAIA leaves that area wide open, and it is up to the school to decide. You can combine academic and athletic scholarships in the NAIA, while at NCAA schools academic scholarships count against the athletic scholarship limit.

Basically, there is more money available in the NAIA. However, most NAIA schools are private schools, and the cost to attend is much higher on the average. Therefore, the final cost to you could be comparable or even higher than an NCAA state school. Even with a good athletic and academic scholarship combination.

With our sons, they both had academic and athletic scholarship offers at NAIA schools, and the net cost to us would have been $15,000-$25,000.

Scholarships are administered according to the policies of the school, not the NAIA. As you can see, there is much more independence attributed to each school.

Recruiting

One huge difference between the NCAA and NAIA recruiting rules is that in the NAIA you are able to have a tryout with the team. This is a tremendous opportunity, and I recommend you take advantage of that. You get to see the coach, meet the team, see how you like the program in action, and it allows the coach to assess your abilities. Your tryout must be done on campus. The NAIA even allows you to have an individual tryout apart from the team practice, but I recommend the former.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible to participate in a scrimmage or intercollegiate competition, you have to fulfill the following:

Meet two of the following three requirements upon entering as a Freshman:

1. Score a minimum of 18 on the ACT or 860 on the SAT 2. Have a high school GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. 3. Graduate in the top half of your high school class.

Once entering an NAIA school, you have to keep up with the work and perform well. Specifically:

1. Be a student in good standing at your school and make normal progress towards your degree.

2. Take 12 units during your season.

3. If you are a second-term freshman, you have to have accumulated 9 units before identification for the second term of attendance.

4. Accumulate at least 24 units the two previous terms. Repeated courses do not count towards the 24 units.

5. To participate, you must be within your first 10 semesters, 12 trimesters, or 15 quarters of attendance as a regularly enrolled student. In other words, your eligibility lasts only 5 years.

6. By the time you are a junior, you have to have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale, and that level must be maintained.

7. To compete in the second season in a sport, you have to have accumulated at least 24 semester hours or 36 quarter hours. This is raised to 48/72 entering the third season and then to 72/108 entering the fourth season. (Entering the fourth season, 48/72 of the hours must be in your major).

The NAIA makes this statement regarding recruiting, setting it apart from the NCAA:

“The NAIA recruitment process is less cumbersome, with fewer restrictions on the contact a student-athlete and coach can make. More frequent communication aids in assuring that the student- athlete is comfortable with the choice of institution. In the event that the student-athlete feels that the school or team is not the right it, he/she can transfer to another NAIA institution and compete the next season without sitting out a year.
