23th to February 25th2017 “Inrecent years the originality and character of regional areas along with their villages andlandscapes arebecoming more and more important. In this context questions arise asto spatial perception and the symbols in the space which influence that perception. Therole of culture in this context forms the basis for the rediscovery of the idiosyncrasies ofvillages and the landscapes surrounding them.” (Walter Niedermayr) valese,Varena,, , Castello-Molina di Fiemme—one Ladin-speaking com munitycalled Moena, and the German-speaking municipality of Truden. The corner stoneof this Allmende-like by apact that concept granted was thelaid Valley in 1111 Communityadministrative autonomy, its own jurisdiction, and certain tax and duty concessions.centuries,For the most important economic and social decisions were madetogether via an administration structure similar to that of apeasant quasi-repu blic. Althoughthe political and economic autonomy of the Fiemme Valleydeteriorated in creasinglyin the nineteenth century as aresult of the changing geopolitical situation, whathas remained to this day is the institution of the Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme, whichgoverns the collective ownership of its lands, forests, and pastures and divvies upthe economic profits obtained therefrom among all the vicini. life inToday, the val ley-communityis still pervaded by the value system codified in the statues of the Ma gnifica, which arebased on solidarity and conceived as asocioeconomic principle that considersall property to be unalienable and indivisible common property. This legal frameworkand the resulting social and economic solidarity, which corresponds in its basictenets to the philosophy of the now internationally discussed commons move ment, have given rise to specific morphologies of the villages with urban-style edifices andahigh spatial density, with afascinating layering between public and private spaces, surprising circulation situations, hybrid house conglomerates and multidimen sionallyused structures. TheSouth artist Tyrolean WalterNiedermayr –internationally known for his photogra phicstudies of space as reality occupied and shaped by people has– been studying andphotographing the specific building culture in the Fiemme Valleyfor many years. Overthe course of seven years he photographed the ValleyCommunity, took roughly preliminary 10,000 photos—and based on them has focused on certain images—con ductedconversations with the inhabitants, and studied relevant books and documents onthe extensive history of the HeValley. immersed himself in the subject matter throughscholarly papers, direct spatial experience on his countless visits, and above allthrough the personal accounts of “natives.” He constructed from this his distanced butsubjectively focused gaze and photographically analyzed the idiosyncrasies of the structuresof the spaces and buildings. He also directed his attention at unadorned everydaylife, at the mundane present situation of building extensions, additions, new floors, and well-meaning restorations. Aselection of these photographs by WalterNiedermayr can be seen in the exhibition “Coexistences”designed by the Vienna-based firm PAUHOF Architekten (Michael Hof stätterand Wolfgang Pauzenberger). Along with interviews with Fiemme Valleyinhabi tantsand published material documenting the valley-community, the exhibition paints adetailed picture of this unique valley and its urbanesque village structures.
