  • Language Specific Peculiarities Document for Halh Mongolian As Spoken in MONGOLIA
Language Specific Peculiarities Document for Halh Mongolian as Spoken in MONGOLIA Halh Mongolian, also known as Khalkha (or Xalxa) Mongolian, is a Mongolic language spoken in Mongolia. It has approximately 3 million speakers. 1. Special handling of dialects There are several Mongolic languages or dialects which are mutually intelligible. These include Chakhar and Ordos Mongol, both spoken in the Inner Mongolia region of China. Their status as separate languages is a matter of dispute (Rybatzki 2003). Halh Mongolian is the only Mongolian dialect spoken by the ethnic Mongolian majority in Mongolia. Mongolian speakers from outside Mongolia were not included in this data collection; only Halh Mongolian was collected. 2. Deviation from native-speaker principle No deviation, only native speakers of Halh Mongolian in Mongolia were collected. 3. Special handling of spelling None. 4. Description of character set used for orthographic transcription Mongolian has historically been written in a large variety of scripts. A Latin alphabet was introduced in 1941, but is no longer current (Grenoble, 2003). Today, the classic Mongolian script is still used in Inner Mongolia, but the official standard spelling of Halh Mongolian uses Mongolian Cyrillic. This is also the script used for all educational purposes in Mongolia, and therefore the script which was used for this project. It consists of the standard Cyrillic range (Ux0410-Ux044F, Ux0401, and Ux0451) plus two extra characters, Ux04E8/Ux04E9 and Ux04AE/Ux04AF (see also the table in Section 5.1). 5. Description of Romanization scheme The table in Section 5.1 shows Appen's Mongolian Romanization scheme, which is fully reversible.

• Northern Paiute Verbs
NORTHERN PAIUTE VERBS BY GILBERT NATCHES NORTHERN PAIUTE VERBS GILBERT NATCHES EDITOR'S NOTE In 1914, Mr. Natches, a full-blooded Northern Paiute of Pyramid Lake, Nevada, a landscape painter of some talent, visited the Univer- sity for several months. He had been invited in the hope that he might assist in the editing of Dr. W. L. Marsden's Northern Paiute texts. This plan proved illusory, partly because of slight differences of idiom between the Paiute of Oregon and Nevada, partly because of psychological causes which render the exact following and inter- preting of another narrator's text difficult. Mr. Natches however readily learned to write his language, and left at the University a vocabulary, series of phrases, and such connected texts as he was able to remember. From these materials have been selected the list of verbs and the brief texts that follow. The orthography is the same as Dr. Marsden's in the preceding paper, with the addition of small capital letters to designate unvoiced vowels. The letter e represents the Shoshonean vowel often written fu or ii, more properly i. Aster- isked forms are those that appear only once in Mr. Natches' writing. Winder historian faced conflicting stories in search for elusive grave EDITOR'S NOTE: Harry C, Dashieli began his search for the lost grave of Maryland Gov. Le vin Winder iwho "died in 1819) in the late 1940s. As the vears passed, Dashieli had managed to concentra te his search on wha t is known as the Lewis Farm, near Venton, in Somerset County. From time to time the attorney faced conflicting theories as to the exact location of the grave. Even by the early 70s Dashieli held firm to his belief that the graveyard was along the banks of Little Monie Creek on the Le wis Farm, but a number of inves tigations failed to yield a trace of the elsuivegra ve. By the 1960s Salisbury busi nessman Da vid Grier became in volved with the search and he to met with silence from local resi dents that he thought might know where the grave was lo cated.
