The Inventory of the Richard Roud Collection #1117 Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center ROOD, RICHARD #1117 September 1989 - June 1997 Biography: Richard Roud ( 1929-1989), as director of both the New York and London Film Festivals, was responsible for both discovering and introducing to a wider audience many of the important directors of the latter half th of the 20 - century (many of whom he knew personally) including Bernardo Bertolucci, Robert Bresson, Luis Buiiuel, R.W. Fassbinder, Jean-Luc Godard, Werner Herzog, Terry Malick, Ermanno Ohni, Jacques Rivette and Martin Scorsese. He was an author of books on Jean-Marie Straub, Jean-Luc Godard, Max Ophuls, and Henri Langlois, as well as the editor of CINEMA: A CRITICAL DICTIONARY. In addition, Mr. Roud wrote extensive criticism on film, the theater and other visual arts for The Manchester Guardian and Sight and Sound and was an occasional contributor to many other publications. At his death he was working on an authorized biography of Fran9ois Truffaut and a book on New Wave film. Richard Roud was a Fulbright recipient and a Chevalier in the Legion of Honor. Scope and contents: The Roud Collection (9 Paige boxes, 2 Manuscript boxes and 3 Packages) consists primarily of book research, articles by RR and printed matter related to the New York Film Festival and prominent directors. Material on Jean-Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut and Henri Langlois is particularly extensive. Though considerably smaller, the Correspondence file contains personal letters from many important directors (see List ofNotable Correspondents). The Photographs file contains an eclectic group of movie stills. -

Between 1933 and 1969, the Green Sheet was offered as a service to civic, educational, and religious centers informing patrons which motion pictures contained potentially offensive and prurient content for younger viewers and families. When the Motion Picture Association of America began underwriting its costs of publication, the Green Sheet was used as a bartering device by the film industry to root out municipal censorship boards and legislative bills mandating state classification measures. The Green Sheet underscored tensions between film industry executives such as Eric Johnston and Jack Valenti, movie theater owners, politicians, and patrons demanding more integrity in monitoring changing film content in the rapidly progressive era of the 1960s. Using a system of symbolic advisory ratings, the Green Sheet set an early precedent for the age-based types of ratings the motion picture industry would adopt in its own rating system of 1968. -

The Language of Emotion in Godard's Films Anuja Madan (Cineaction 80 2010) So, to the question ʻWhat is Cinema?ʼ, I would reply: the expression of lofty sentiments. —Godard, in an essay 1 Nana: Isnʼt love the only truth?2 Emotion in the New Wave films is a fraught concept. Critics like Raymond Durgnat have commented that the New Wave films are characterized by emotional “dryness,” but such a view fails to engage with the complexity of the films.3 In what may seem like a paradoxical statement, these films display a passionate concern for the status of emotional life while being simultaneously engaged in the critique of emotion. This paper seeks to discuss the complex dynamics of emotion in three of Jean-Luc Godardʼs films—Vivre Sa Vie (My Life to Live, 1962), Alphaville, une Étrange aventure de Lemmy Caution (Alphaville, A Strange Adventure of Lemmy Caution, 1965) and Week End (1967). All of them belong to the fertile period of the 60s in which Godardʼs aesthetic strategies became increasingly daring. These will be examined in relation to some of his critical writings. An important paradigm within which Godardʼs films will be analyzed is that of cinemaʼs relationship to reality. A foundational principle of the New Wave was the faith in the intrinsic realism of the cinema, something Bazin had expounded upon. However, according to Godard, Bazinʼs model of cinema was novelistic, the realist description of relationships existent elsewhere. In his model, the director constructs his film, dialogue, and mise-en- scene, at every point: Reality is formed as the camera is framing it. -

The Philosopher Cameo By Trine Riel Fall 2015 Issue of KINEMA THE PHILOSOPHER CAMEO Within current film studies a distinction is made between what are termed respectively ”philosophy offilm” and ”film as philosophy” (or in some extreme cases ”filmosophy”).(1) While philosophy of film refers to a philosophical study of films, ”a discussion of philosophical problems related to film, its nature, effects,and value”, film as philosophy proposes the medium of film itself as a mode of philosophising, awayof doing philosophy.(2) What the film as philosophy thesis proposes, in short, is that some works of film ”through means exclusive to cinema” can be understood to make concrete, epistemological contributions to philosophy that are just as rigorous as traditional philosophical propositions expressed linguistically.(3) And further, that it is not by citation of existing philosophical texts, or by having a recognised philosopher talk on screen, that a film can be said to align itself with philosophical activity: Merely ”downloading” philosophical content onto a film’s soundtrack does not make the film itself a philosophical proposition but only a representation of one.(4) Rather, if film can be said to produce philosophy, to engage in philosophical practice proper,it must instead be by its own, that is by cinematic, means. This article will not consider whether or not film can do philosophy or if doing philosophy can in factbe identified with the production or formulation of propositions. It aims instead at what is, in manyways,a more straightforward investigation. Rather than viewing works of film from a philosophical perspective, the following will focus on how the philosopher, as the embodied representative of the philosophical discipline, appears within a filmic context. -

His parents sent him to live in Switzerland when the war broke out, but in the late 40's he returned to Paris to study ethnology at the Sorbonne. He became acquainted with Claude Chabrol, Francois Truffaut, Eric Rohmer and Jacques Rivette, forming part of a group of passionate young film- makers devoted to exploring new possibilities in cinema. They were the leading lights of Cahiers du Cinéma, where they published their radical views on film. Godard's obsession with cinema beyond all else led to alienation from his family who cut off his allowance. Like the small time crooks he was to feature in his films, he supported himself by petty theft. He was desperate to put his theories into practice so he took a job working on a Swiss dam and used it as an opportunity to film a documentary on the project. -

01 02 03 The New Wave Hotel 04 05 Roland-François Lack 06 07 08 09 The association of the French New Wave with the kind of movement through urban 10 space that has been called flânerie is a familiar one. A defamiliarising strategy in this 11 chapter, and in my research more broadly,1 is to examine and occupy the spaces in 12 which New Wave films come to rest, countering a general assumption that cinema is 13 always about movement. The hotel is a peculiarly cinematic stopping place because, it 14 has been argued, it is ‘always already in motion’, a ‘ceaseless flux of reservations, occu- 15 pations and vacancies’.2 By fixing exactly the locations of Paris hotels in New Wave films 16 and by looking closely at the contents of the rooms in those hotels, this chapter will try 17 to resist the appeal of such mobility and fix its gaze firmly on its object, unmoved. The 18 suggestion will be, finally, that the French New Wave is less a cinema of flânerie than 19 it is a cinema of stasis; is as much a cinema of interiors as it is a cinema of the street. 20 What, cinematically, is particular about the New Wave’s use of hotels? New Wave 21 hotels are places of passage, temporary stopping places that signify transience and, in 22 the end, mobility. In her study of cinematic flânerie, Suzanne Liandrat-Guigues defines 23 the cinematographic image as ‘passage’,3 and though she goes on to illustrate the point 24 through New Wave films that follow characters as they walk in streets, fixing on their 25 ‘singular mobility’, here we will be following the New Wave’s characters into spaces 26 where walking is restricted.
