  • A Sentinal Appeared Carrying One of Goering's Fine Leather Cases. 'I
A sentinal appeared carrying one of Goering’s fine leather cases. ’I felt you should see this, sir.’ He opened it to reveal the big- gest collection of pills I had ever seen in my life. There were approximately twenty thousand pills in the case that Goering claimed were for a heart ailment. He would take them by the handfull, 20 in the morning and 20 at night. They were Paracodin a German syn- thetic drug used when morphine was not available. Also found among his clothes and personal effects were several ’tiny vials of Potas- sium Cyanide’. Examined each vial had enough cyanide to bring in- stant death to a dozen men. One of these vials, Goering managed to keep concealed for over a year until he committed "suicide with it only hours before he was to be hanged. "As well as his ’secret weapons’, Herr Goering’s valuables listed on the inventory and deposited under lock and key in the Gun room, were: 1 gold Luftwaffe badge; 1 gold Luftwaffe badge with diamonds; 1 deskwatch; 1 travelling clock by Movado; I large personal toilet case; 1 gold cigarette case, inlaid with amethyst and monogrammed by Prince Paul of Yugoslavia; 1 silver pill-box; 1 gold and velvet cigar-case; 1 square watch by Cartier, set with diamonds; 1 gold chain, gold pencil and cutter; 3 keys; 1 emerald ring; 1 diamond ring; 1 ruby ring; 1 semi-precious buttons; 1 small eagle with di- amond chips; 1 diamond A/C brooch; 4 cuff-links with semi-precious stones; 1 gold pin (evergreen twig); 1 pearl stick-pin; 1 gold stick- pin with swastika of diamond chips; 1 watch fob (platinum,

  • Soviet Family Law in the Light of Russian History and Marxist Theory Harold J
SOVIET FAMILY LAW IN THE LIGHT OF RUSSIAN HISTORY AND MARXIST THEORY HAROLD J. BERMAN" To maintain an equilibrium between change and continuity is a crucial problem for modem -society, and one which "has confronted Soviet Russia during the past decade in an acute form. The Revolu- tion, which set out to annihilate everything that belonged to the past, has come to terms with the pre-revolutionary Russian heritage. If only to preserve the new, it has been found necessary to restore some- thing of the old. And this, in turn, has involved a revaluation of the Marxist doctrines upon which the Revolution is founded. Particularly in Soviet family law, there has been within the last 10 years a partial restoration of pre-revolutionary traditions and a partial restatement of Marxist principles. By investigating the backgrounds of Russian history and Marxist theory, we may be in a position prop- erly to understand these developments. PRE-REVOLUTIONARY RuSSIAN FAMILY LAW The first written law of Russian history begins with the rules of the blood-feud. I Such law testifies to a public order which existed, when it did exist, only as between families, but which was powerless to reach down into the internal relationships of a household. At best, it Was inter-family law-analogous perhaps to our modem international law. Within the family there was only the law of that family, determined by tribal custom. 2 The first Russian chronicle tells of incestuous marriage, wife-capture, general promiscuity.3 For the husband there was com- plete freedom of divorce, while the wife was not released from marriage even by the death of her husband but had to follow him into the next world.

  • All Stalin's Men? Soldierly Masculinities in the Soviet
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Illinois Digital Environment for Access to Learning and Scholarship Repository ALL STALIN’S MEN? SOLDIERLY MASCULINITIES IN THE SOVIET WAR EFFORT, 1938-1945 BY STEVEN GEORGE JUG DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Diane Koenker, Chair Professor Mark Steinberg Associate Professor Mark Micale Associate Professor John Randolph ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the different but interconnected ways Soviet leaders and citizen-soldiers interpreted the Soviet war effort as a masculine endeavor. At the front, the entry of women into the ranks of combatants challenged not only men’s preeminence, but also official and popular narratives of a masculine ethic of national defense that stretched back to the Russian Revolution. The chapters of this dissertation explore the ways in which masculine values and priorities from the 1930s persisted in the Red Army despite the distinguished service of female combatants and divisions among male soldiers, commanders, and propagandists. Motives and actions such as hating and killing, comradeship and revenge, or serving Stalin and using skill, appeared as exclusively masculine in frontline culture, in contrast to depictions of vulnerable women as non-combatants and passive victims in the civilian realm. Analyzing Russian archival materials, military newspapers, and soldiers’ letters and memoirs, this study investigates the interaction and evolution of official and popular notions of soldiers and heroes as masculine subjects.

Such a deprivation of women’s agency led to female soldiers’ confusion of identity, experience of shame and consequential self-censorship.
