    Darkness Is Cheap1 Spooky similarities and shared symbolism between A Christmas Carol and Groundhog Day By: Thomas M Ciesla January, 2018 At first glance the storylines of “A Christmas Carol” and “Groundhog Day” couldn’t be more different. Written 150 years apart, Dickens story was heavily influenced by social injustices of the time: poverty, child labor horrors, and social class structure. Groundhog Day was written on a vastly different social fabric, in a place far removed from foggy-smoggy London: sunny and carefree Los Angeles. The former was penned during the oppressive 1800’s of England, while the latter was created on the golden coast of California in the 1990’s. Perhaps these disparities are most apparent in the overall pessimism of A Christmas Carol versus the optimism and somewhat snarky humor of Groundhog Day. Each protagonist has a slightly different way of expressing distaste for others and society in general. Scrooge prefers the more enigmatic “Bah Humbug” to articulate his overall disaffection. Phil prefers the slightly more hostile “people are morons.” Now for some similarities. Winter is omnipresent in each storyline as you would expect given the similar timeframes, but more important are references to the creeping, otherworldly cold. It permeates the neighborhoods, the buildings, the people, and the heart and soul of Scrooge and Phil.     The Birth of Chinese Nationalism By Salvatore Babones May 3, 2019 In China, May 4 is Youth Day, a holiday established by the Communist Party in 1949 and celebrated on and off ever since. On this day in 1989, more than 100,000 students demonstrated in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, a key milestone on road to the tragic events of June 4, when Chinese troops opened fire on the civilians amassed there. This year, China’s president and Communist Party leader, Xi Jinping, has called on students to commemorate a very special Youth Day. But it’s not the 30th anniversary of 1989’s pro- democracy protests that he has in mind. Rather, it is the 100th anniversary of May 4, 1919, that he wants to commemorate. On that day a century ago, another group of students rallied in Tiananmen Square. In May 1919, the leaders of World War I’s victorious allies were meeting in Paris to determine the shape of the postwar world. Most Westerners know that the resulting Treaty of Versailles profoundly influenced subsequent European history through the foundation of the League of Nations, the rise of Adolf Hitler, and eventually World War II. Some may even know how the peace treaty, the Balfour Declaration, and the Sykes-Picot Agreement created the modern Middle East.     JEFFERSON PARISH EMPLOYEE DIVERSITY & INCLUSION BOARD APRIL 2021 CALENDAR BULLETS Autism Awareness Month is a time to educate your community about autism and Light It Up Blue! Spreading autism awareness in schools is a great way to celebrate April and promote inclusion and acceptance in the classroom and beyond. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) refers to a group of complex neurodevelopment disorders. The term “spectrum” refers to the wide range of symptoms, skills, and levels of disability in functioning. In 2013, the American Psychiatric Association merged four previously distinct diagnoses into one umbrella diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). These included autistic disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDDNOS) and Asperger syndrome. Children and adults with ASD are fully able to perform all activities of daily living while others require substantial support to perform basic activities. ASD occurs in every racial and ethnic group, and across all socioeconomic levels. However, boys are significantly more likely to develop ASD than girls. The latest analysis from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1 in 68 children has ASD. Symptoms can vary greatly from person to person depending on the severity of the disorder. Symptoms may even go unrecognized for young children who have mild ASD or less debilitating handicaps. It is important that early evaluation is conducted, by an expert, so that indicators of ASD are detected and may have a dramatic impact on reducing the symptoms. Autism and other forms of disability are part of the human experience that contributes to human diversity.
