“World Youth Day (WYD) is an opportunity for young Catholics to encounter the global Church and all its riches. More than 2/3s of the Catholics in the world now live outside of North America and Europe. WYD is a time to experience that reality.” “Many of the young men and women who have entered Holy Orders or religious communities had found the profound first call to a vocation at WYD.” “Come to WYD to be with your peers and Pope Francis!” Bishop Coyne What is World Youth Day? Starting in 1985 in Rome by Pope John Paul II, the Holy Father has invited youth and young adults to gather periodically with him across the world in an epic event known as World Youth Day. Though the title indicates a “day,” it is really a week long life changing experience of the universality and richness of the Catholic Church. This past summer, Pope Francis invited youth and young adults from across the world to the 14th World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland. The Diocese of Burlington will be teaming up with Chris Dawson and “Save Vermont” to send a group of pilgrims, along with millions of other Catholics from around the world, to the place where Saint Pope John Paul II spent much of his life. The official website for WYD Krakow has been released (http://www.krakow2016.com/en ) Please view the official World Youth Day promotional video here Who can attend? The pilgrimage is for both youth and young adults. For the purpose of this pilgrimage, we are defining youth and young adults as the following: Youth • generally between 16-18 years old • at least 16 years old by time of departure (July 22, 2016) -- exceptions may be made for those teens attending with a parent • currently enrolled in high school or is in home school • graduated from high school in the spring/summer of 2016 Young Adult • between 18-29 years old • graduated from high school on or before the spring/summer of 2016 What will happen and how will we get there? The basic itinerary for the trip is as follows: - July 19th – Travel to Poland (van from Burlington to Montreal – then a flight to Poland). - July 20th – Acclimate and some tourism - July 21st – July 24th – ‘Days in the Diocese’ at the Siedlce Seminary in Siedlce, Poland. Siedlce is a city roughly 4 ½ hours from Krakow (where the main WYD events will take place). Pilgrims from 14 countries plan to be there… (http://en.2016jerycho.pl/) - July 25th – 31st -- WYD Week in Krakow: There will be various events with Pope Francis and millions of pilgrims from around the world! - August 1-2 - Travel back to Vermont via Montreal Here are some pictures from prior World Youth Days: What about chaperones for youth? We will be traveling as a diocesan delegation throughout this pilgrimage to World Youth Day. There will be ‘Days in the Diocese’ where we will be staying at the Siedlce Seminary (roughly 4 ½ hours northeast from Krakow). For every parish sending youth, the pastor (if attending) or his designee will be the main point of contact for each parish. All parishes sending youth must have at least one chaperone (at least 21 years old) for every six youth on the pilgrimage. Parishes can work together on this as long as the 1:6 ratio of chaperone to youth is in place. No chaperone is required for young adult pilgrims. All chaperones need to be compliant with Diocesan policies regarding child protection. How do I register and when is the deadline? An initial deposit of $400 and signed application is required to secure a spot on the pilgrimage. The current cost of the trip is $2200. This is a rock bottom price compared to other nearby dioceses ($3700 in New Hampshire and $4100 in Boston). Space is limited and can be closed off without prior notification. After slots are filled we cannot guarantee there will be availability to join the pilgrimage. All attending pilgrims should obtain a passport at least 3 months prior to the trip to Poland. Please note that the price may increase for those joining the pilgrimage after mid- September due to airfare increases. We will do the best we can to keep prices at a minimum. What about travel in Poland and safety concerns? Safety is obviously a concern whenever one travels abroad. The Office of Youth and Young Adult as well as Save Vermont will be partnering with local organizations to ensure the best and safest travel experience. July is the summer season in Krakow and the temperatures tend to be roughly the same as Vermont, averaging in the Mid to upper 70’s. Temperatures can range from the mid- fifties at night to almost 80 during the day. Krakow is one of the predominant tourist locations in Poland and therefore has many support facilities. The official language of Poland is, of course, Polish, although you will find English, German and French spoken to some degree in popular tourist areas. The currency in Poland is the Zloty. Current exchange rates can be found here: http://data.worldbank.org/country/poland Our diocesan delegation is focused on the safety of all the pilgrims involved with the group. We want everyone to have a grace-filled pilgrimage and return home safely. Because of the valid concerns regarding a pilgrimage to any foreign country, we will be focused on group activities and traveling as a group as much as possible. There will be meetings before the pilgrimage to help answer any questions or concerns and to best prepare the delegation. Please make sure you are up-to-date on routine vaccines before trip. These vaccines include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine, varicella (chickenpox) vaccine, polio vaccine, and your yearly flu shot. How do I get my Passport and Visa (if required)? All US Citizens must have a valid Passport for travel abroad. Passports must be valid over six months following the date of your return to the United States. The cost for obtaining a passport is roughly $135 and takes approximately 4-6 weeks to issue. Please have your passport four months prior to the pilgrimage (March 19). The State Department has more information on how to apply for or renew a passport (http://travel.state.gov/passport). You can also apply for your passport at your local Post Office. Poland does not require US citizens to have a Visa. What will be the total cost of the pilgrimage? The cost can change depending on several factors. The package includes air travel, ground transportation, lodging, most meals, and World Youth Day event registration. The current estimate is $2200. Again, this price may increase for those applying late. Pilgrims are encouraged to bring spending money in addition to the cost of the pilgrimage. Also, items to ‘trade’ with other pilgrims from around the world is always an enjoyable part of the world youth experience (bottles of Vermont maple syrup maybe? ) Parishes and individuals can organize fundraising efforts to cover most or all of the cost. The Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry can help with fundraising ideas (the best idea is a simple letter asking for financial support from friends and family). How do I pay? Pilgrims can elect to make payment in full or in installments by check made payable to “Save Vermont”. The first deposit of $400 may be sent with the application to either: Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry 55 Joy Drive, South Burlington, Vermont 05403 Or: Christopher Dawson - VT WYD 320 Woods Hollow Road, Westford, VT 05494 Where will I be staying? While in Siedlce, we will be staying at the local seminary with other pilgrims. While in Krakow, we will be staying with other pilgrims in a place designated by World Youth Day – either a Church, school, gym or hall. In other words, we will be ‘roughing it’ and not staying in hotels. Questions? For all questions please contact Chris Dawson at [email protected] or, 802-872-9776. Or, contact Bill Gavin, Diocesan Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry, at 802-658-6110 ext. 1240, or email him at [email protected] Some of the Popular Religious Sites in Poland we hope to visit while in Poland: Diocese of Siedlce Kalawaria Zebrzydowskiej Auschwitz Czestochowa Krakow .
