    Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics, 2018, 11, 51-74 51 © 2018 College Sport Research Institute Renown to Rubble: The Rise and Fall Of Pitt Stadium 1925-1999 __________________________________________________________ Chad Seifried Louisiana State University Jim Evans The Ohio State University Allison Mosso Louisiana State University __________________________________________________________ This paper traces the evolution of Pitt Stadium from 1925 to 1999 and highlights critical figures and events in the financing and construction of the venue, details renovation efforts, and presents information, which led to its abandonment and subsequent demolition. Pitt Stadium, like other campus stadia, was built to open untapped reservoirs of alumni donations, increase revenues, and enhance “brand awareness” to improve student enrollments, the overall campus experience, and help the school “climb” the ladder of institutional reputation. Yet, image attacks regarding the perceived professionalization of college football, internal tension, the Great Depression, poor scheduling, and lack of spectator and player amenities contributed to the failure of the building to pay off its debt and subsequent dissatisfaction among various stakeholders. Although the University ultimately abandoned Pitt Stadium when it was no longer commercially viable, the school’s attempts to use on-campus athletics to secure important recognition as a major university are instructive for other institutions considering similar ideas.     Proposed Institutional Master Plan Update University of Pittsburgh Mid Campus District (Updated and Revised) Lower Campus District FINAL DRAFT January 29, 2010 Preface The University of Pittsburgh, one of the Nation’s oldest and most distinguished institutions of higher education, reaffirms its academic mission with planned improvements to the University’s facilities. This Institutional Master Plan Update reiterates the guiding principles established in the University of Pittsburgh Facilities Plan (1998-2007) along with the priorities developed in the University of Pittsburgh Facilities Plan (2007-2018). The University Facilities Management Division assembled a planning committee to update their Institutional Master Plan (IMP) for the Oakland Campus with the help of MacLachlan, Cornelius & Filoni, Inc. For purposes of planning, the Oakland Campus is divided into twelve campus districts. This IMP updates the previously planned Mid Campus district and it addresses planning issues in the Lower Campus district. One of the main goals of the IMP Update is to develop zoning guidelines to be approved by the City of Pittsburgh in order to facilitate future development in these districts. Beginning in late 2009, the University of Pittsburgh presented the proposed concepts included in this document and invited feedback from the Oakland Community Council, Oakland Task Force, Schenley Farms Civic Association, Bellefield Area Citizens Association and Part of the Solution Community Groups. Representatives of the Department of City Planning were consulted in determining the requirements of this document.
