With the hugely successful One Day Event and the unforgettable talk by Clare Balding, the Vine’s Autumn programme got off to a flying start. It was good to see so many members and their families at both events and, at Clare’s talk, we were joined by a large number of Vine “supporters”. As a branch we are incredibly lucky that we can call on a network of volunteers who do not have children currently in the branch but, nevertheless, are willing to help organise events or make resources, such as the impressive facilities at Cheam School, available. As a thank you, we were able to invite many of our supporters to attend Clare’s talk as guests of the Vine. Our other key source of volunteers is, of course, the parents of our members and, on behalf of our members, a big thank you for everything which you have done for the Vine during 2012 and a thank you in advance for everything you do in 2013! If you are the parent of a new member and you are not sure how you can help, please look out for requests for volunteers in Hoofprint or have a chat with any committee member. There are always things (big and small, horsey and non-horsey) to do which make a huge difference to the experiences which we can offer to our members and their ponies. Only our instructors are paid. Everyone else is a volunteer, so we really do need you!! Best wishes, Caroline Over 300 people attended “An Evening with Clare Balding”. We raised over £1,000 for the Vine PC and nearly £350 for Riding for the Disabled (Clare’s chosen charity) which was split between two local branches. Hoof Print Camp Camp dates are: Mini Camp Monday 5 – Thursday 8 August Adbury Park, Burghclere, Berks RG20 4HB ( By kind permission of Mr & Mrs Skipworth) Age 8 or under on 31 August 2013 Junior Camp Monday 29 July – Friday 2 August Three Maids, Down Farm, Down Farm Lane Headbourne Worthy, Winchester, Hampshire SO22 6RG Age 9 - 13 on 31 August 2013 Senior Camp Sunday 28 July (eve) – Thursday 1 August Boomerang Stables, West Soley, Hungerford RG17 0TW Age 14 or over on 31 August 2013 The forms have gone out for Junior Camp – see website if you need a copy. Please do book your place early. We need to know who is coming ASAP so that we can book the best instructors before they get committed to do other things! Forms for the other camps will be sent out in the New Year. Clothing After many years supporting the branch in a variety of different roles, Julie Mitchell is standing down as clothing organiser. Thank you for outstanding contribution to the Vine, Julie. Penny Burton (Membership Secretary) has kindly offered to take on this role from 1 January 2013. Watch out for an email in the New Year with a list of clothing available together with prices and arrangements for ordering. For any pre-Christmas orders please contact Julie Mitchell (address on the front) Not All Hats Are Equal Not all riding hats meet stringent safety requirements. The Pony Club requires all hats worn by members at PC events to be tagged to show that they meet high standards of safety. The tag is a little purple label which should be attached to the hat – usually by wrapping it round the chin strap at the back. Hats are often checked at events and, to avoid last minute issues (which can be seriously stressful for members and their parents!), we strongly recommend that you get any hats checked and tagged at the earliest opportunity. Hoof Print The nominated hat taggers for the Vine are Caroline Blatchford and Penny Burton. Our children are different ages so between us we attend a good proportion of rallies etc. We will also make special arrangements to attend mini events from time to time. It is helpful to read the rules before you buy a new hat for your son or daughter. To see the rules please click on the link: http://www.pcuk.org/uploads/HAT_RULE_2012.pdf Any queries, please contact Caroline or Penny (details at the front) Vine Shows Saturday 23 February Spring Show at Sparsholt (from 2’0” – 2’3”) Monday 27 May Vine PC Open Show at Park Farm, Oakley Sunday 9 September ODE Levels 1 & 2 Area and National Dates A list of some of the key dates. • Historic Landscape Character Areas and Their Special Qualities and Features of Significance
Historic Landscape Character Areas and their special qualities and features of significance Volume 1 Third Edition March 2016 Wyvern Heritage and Landscape Consultancy Emma Rouse, Wyvern Heritage and Landscape Consultancy www.wyvernheritage.co.uk – [email protected] – 01747 870810 March 2016 – Third Edition Summary The North Wessex Downs AONB is one of the most attractive and fascinating landscapes of England and Wales. Its beauty is the result of many centuries of human influence on the countryside and the daily interaction of people with nature. The history of these outstanding landscapes is fundamental to its present‐day appearance and to the importance which society accords it. If these essential qualities are to be retained in the future, as the countryside continues to evolve, it is vital that the heritage of the AONB is understood and valued by those charged with its care and management, and is enjoyed and celebrated by local communities. The North Wessex Downs is an ancient landscape. The archaeology is immensely rich, with many of its monuments ranking among the most impressive in Europe. However, the past is etched in every facet of the landscape – in the fields and woods, tracks and lanes, villages and hamlets – and plays a major part in defining its present‐day character. Despite the importance of individual archaeological and historic sites, the complex story of the North Wessex Downs cannot be fully appreciated without a complementary awareness of the character of the wider historic landscape, its time depth and settlement evolution. This wider character can be broken down into its constituent parts.
