KNOWLEDGE IN ACTION Guide to Educational Activities at Qatar Museums & Cultural Sites - October - December 2014 INTRO - Qatar’s museums and cultural sites offer a variety of innovative, enriching and fun educational programs aimed at enhancing the learning experience for students and teachers. At QM we strive to stay connected to the flourishing formal education sector in Qatar, so that we bring teachers custom-made workshops, activities, conferences and trainings to suit their needs as educators. We also offer activities for individuals and families that can enhance their leisure time by learning about the world around them in an engaging, hands-on manner. All of our activities align with the Supreme Education Council Professional Standards for Teach- ers and the National Curriculum Standards. If you would like to book a visit to any of our activities please contact the relevant museum/ department directly for an appointment. All of our programs are free of charge and spaces are limited. The main objective of the Department of Archaeology is the educational Point of View: Working to achieve and spread archaeology awareness in the community. ARCHAEOLOGY & Students will learn the basics of archaeology POTTERY and pottery restoration, and take a workshop on flint RESTORATION stone.They will participate in a pottery workshop, WORKSHOP followed by a lecture on archaeology and archaeological survey. Age: 7-12 LOCATION: School Site Throughout the visit the students will practice the archaeological survey process. Finally, the students will have the option of visiting the UNESCO Heritage site, Al Zubarah, where they will go on a tour of Al Zubarah fort and to the archaeological town of Al Zubarah. 06 FIELD SURVEY Students are introduced to field survey by searching LOCATION: On-site for artifacts, recording them and using special tools. This exercise aims at spreading the spirit of coopera- tion, teaching students the importance of reporting any found pieces to the appropriate authority. FIELD VISITS TO The aim is to revive archaeological sites and let future AL-ZUBARAH FORT generations learn more about the monuments of our ancestors. LOCATION: Al Zubarah Fort EDUCATIONAL LECTURES The goal of these lectures is to teach students the & SEMINARS meaning of the monuments, their importance and the way to preserve them. 07 FLINT TOOL-MAKING In this workshop students are introduced to the an- WORKSHOP cient technique of flint tool making and to learn how LOCATION: School Site people in the prehistory in Qatar used flint rock stone to create sophisticated tools essential to hunting, preparing food and making clothing. Then students will have the opportunity to make flint arrowheads by themselves. EXCAVATION SQUARE An experimental archaeological site has been set-up LOCATION: On-site and embedded with pieces of pottery to provide students with a project-based learning experience in how to professionally dig up objects during an exca¬vation. This exercise teaches students how, why and when an excavation should take place, as well as the process and tools used in excavations. 08 AL ZUBARAH ARCHAEOLOGICAL TEAM (UNIVERSITY OF COPENHAGEN) Al Zubarah, Qatar’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site welcomes pre-booked school tours. Due to the outdoor nature of these tours they run only in the winter months from October to April. Typically a day trip to us for one or two classes (around 35 people maximum), would last from 9:00 am till 12:00 pm, or from 10:00 am till 2:00 pm, including: a tour of Al Zubarah Fort, a short lecture, a chance to see and handle some of the artifacts and then a visit to the excavation area in the town itself. We tailor our tours to the age of your pupils, and we have received positive feedback from primary level through to university students. Currently guided tours are only offered in English. AL ZUBARAH ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE VISIT: EXHIBIT, SITE VISIT, LECTURE, WORKSHOP Ages: 6–18 years old Location: Al Zubarah The Al Zubarah Archaeological Site Visit is the chance to go on a tour of Al Zubarah Fort with an archaeologist. Students will receive a lecture in our schools tent about Al Zubarah Old Town and the work of the archaeologists. They will also get a chance to interact with archaeological artifacts, visit the park and archaeological site where the “Palace” excava- tions occurred, and walk through the old town. By bringing your students and children to the Al Zubarah Archaeological site, we hope to help build awareness about Qatar’s past, while also expanding knowledge and interest in the role of archaeology among local communities. Collectively we hope to facilitate a better knowledge & interest in Al Zubarah, Qatari history, life in the past, daily life, and the economy. Our activities are unique, and urge children and families to play, explore and investigate together. We support learning through hands-on creative experiences, which we take into community venues and schools throughout Qatar. Our programs include innovative science experiments, creative master classes and fantastic storytelling. All of our offerings aim to strengthen family bonds, develop creativity, build confidence and improve communication skills. We come to you. ALMA’MAL – THE WORK STUDIO Language: English Target Audience: Age 7-11 years Date: September to December 2014 Contact Person: (English and Arabic) [email protected] AlMa’mal helps bring children’s ideas to life, building upon their creativity to deliver responses to real world opportunities and challenges. Children will build their creativity; learn about entrepreneurship and motivation, and become inspired and ready to make a difference for the benefit of Qatar. Over au- tumn 2014 children will work in partnership with a museum’s exhibition team to create a public exhibit. 12 ALHALAKA Alhalaka is a program designed to take creativity to Language: Arabic & English a new level in your institution. It also carries out an artist in residency program for young local artists to help them develop their skills and horizons. The Public Art Department further organizes and manages exhibi- tions at Al Riwaq and the QM Gallery at Katara. Alongside their commitment to developing the public art in Doha, the team run workshops for school teachers and educators, as well as Family Fridays, engaging children and parents in fun learning activities. They also conduct guided tours of exhibitions at QM Gallery Katara and QM Gallery Al Riwaq for schools and universities.
