    College news 201 IN MEMORIAM Sir Victor Ewings Negus at an early stage in his career, but at that time >,rm~s only intense personal drive could create the neces- sary conditions to make this possible. The Mechan- ism of the Larynx is a classic piece of research and is still the standard reference book of the world. In 1937 he assisted St Clair Thomson in the preparation of the fourth edition of Diseases of the Nose and Throat, which has been for many years the standard textbook in English on this sub- ject. The fifth and sixth editions were entirely his, and he brought them completely up to date. The language was lucid and concise and very readable. This textbook was his only major publication in clinical otolaryngology, but he had many publica- tions outside the field of clinical surgery. In the basic sciences he published books on The Compara- tive Anatomy and Physiology of the Larynx in 1949, The Comparative Anatomy of the Nose and Accessory Sinuses in 1958, and The Biology of Respiration in I965. The theories expounded in these books were developed and supported by his own laboratory investigations carried out in the Ferens Institute at the Middlesex Hospital and in the Royal College of Surgeons after he had retired from clinical practice at King's College Hospital. When the Council of the Royal College of Sur- geons, under the presidency of Lord Webb-Johnson, decided to co-opt to Council representatives of specialist branches of surgery Victor Negus was the first co-opted member for otolaryngology.

    J. H. HOVELL The extra-oral approach to the ascending ramus is difficult owing to the proximity of the facial nerve. The intra-oral approach is, however, quite simple and fixation by sigmoid notch wiring straightforward. It was not until I was well advanced with my assessment of these cases that my views on open ascending ramus slides became modified. I have not yet done a sufficient number of these cases to form other than tentative conclusions, but I feel that this lecture would not be complete without at least this mention of my most recent work. In conclusion I must again thank Mr. C. Bowdler Henry for allowing me access to his cases and Mr. Richard Battle for his helpful advice and encouragement. In the 1960s conservator David Tompsett made a large series of corrosion casts of mammalian organs. These casts are made when resin is injected into the soft tissues of an organ and left to set. The body part is then bathed in acid to disintegrate the surrounding tissues. The result is an intricate resin cast. The cast on the front cover shows a pair of lungs. 2 Welcome to this summer edition of Surgical Spirit , which mainly revolves around a series of successes for our Museums and Archives department, such as designation status for our collections; the staging of an event with a difference; funding for our ‘War, Art and Surgery’ programme in 2014. Many snippets also include the news about the Hunterian Museum featuring in The Times and the FT Weekend Magazine ; The Hunterian Bicentenary Fellowship award; and catering discounts available for our helpers. Our own volunteers’ contributions in this issue make us re-live our recent day out and the experience of visiting the College and the Hunterian Museum from an artist’s point of view; while the curatorial focus is on a recently re-displayed museum case and the completion of the latest Wellcome Museum of Anatomy and Pathology project. Once again in this edition there are plenty of team changes relating to both staff and volunteers.   • Cruise Med Norwegian Sun – September 2012
    Cruise med Norwegian Sun – september 2012 Dagbog fra en dejlig cruiseferie i Nordsøen og Atlanterhavet Søndag d. 16. september: Vi fik pakket kufferterne færdig om formiddagen, sat urtepotterne i vand og var klar til afgang kl. 12. Forinden var vi begge på vægten, så vi kan se hvordan 2 ugers cruise indvirker. Der kom mail fra Rikke med link til en dejlig video fra vores familiecruise i Middelhavet i sommer. Der var telefon fra Thomas, Rikke og Lissa med gode ønsker for rejsen, og Steen & Karin og Lissy & Gert sendte mail og ønskede god tur. Michael kørte os til Frihavnen, og indchekningen på Norwegian Sun gik meget hurtigt og enkelt. Vi fik vores ”stateroom”, og gik derefter op på 11. sal og fik BBQ frokost ved poolside. Det var salat og grillet kylling, og kun Karin fik is til dessert. Vi var derefter på rundtur og se alle skibets faciliteter. Der var redningsøvelse på dæk 6 en halv time før afsejling, og kl. 17 afgik skibet, og vi var tilskuere til noget underholdning med musik og dans på dæk. 9. KL. 18 gik vi til restaurant Seven Seas og fik et bord til 2. Vi syntes godt om lokalet, den høflige betjening og maden. Karin fik laksetartar, svinemedaljon og norsk cheesecake, og jeg valgte caesar salad og grillet kyllingebryst og ingen dessert. Der blev serveret isvand, og vi holdt os fra vin. Vi slentrede derefter igen lidt rundt, og jeg skrev lidt på dagbogen, inden vi kl. 21 gik til Stardust teatret og så dagens show. Den kvindelige canadiske cruise director Jamie var meget veltalende og underholdende, et par der fejrede 60 års bryllupsdag fik en flaske champagne, en række senior officerer blev præsenteret, et ensemble på 14 unge personer dansede og sang, og en herrekvartet fremførte med succes en række sange på italiensk og engelsk bl.a.
