Art Appreciation Lecture Series 2019 Being human: The figure in art Life Class: Drawing the nude in Australia Anne Ryan 28/29 August, 2019 Lecture summary: In Australia from the mid 19th century until well into the 20th, the most diverse range of artists in Australia have made life drawings as an essential part of their art training and ongoing practice. Life classes for drawing and painting from the nude model maintained a dual purpose of functional training of the hand and eye of the artist, and as a liberalising and civilising subject for art. This lecture surveys life drawings made by Australian artists at home and abroad from the 1880s to the 1950s, giving an insight into the great breadth of approaches taken by them, as well as changing perceptions about what the nude model as subject could say about art.
