    "Jacky Jacky Was a Smart Young Fella": A study of art and Aboriginality in south east Australia 1900-1980 Sylvia Kleinert A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The Australian National University, April 1994. xiv A note on the title The title of my thesis, "Jacky Jacky Was a Smart Young Fella" is a well-known south eastern Aboriginal song. As in any folk tradition, the origins of the song are obscure and wording varies according to time, place and performer. My title follows the version sung in 1961 by Alick Jackomos, a lifelong supporter of Victorian Aborigines and recorded by Alan West, then a curator at the Museum of Victoria. Some performers, including Percy Mumbulla from the south coast and Alick Jackomos attribute the song to the Wallaga Lake community, others, like the Aboriginal singer, Jimmy Little, and the ethnographer, Anna Vroland, favour Lake Tyers. In 1968 Percy Mumbulla claimed Jacky Jacky was a corroboree song taught to him by Sam Drew (Bubela) however the Lake Tyers informants cited by Vroland attribute the English verses to Captain Newman, manager of Lake Tyers station in 1928- 1931 : they maintain the chorus refers to the arrival of steamer traffic between Bairnsdale and Orbost at the turn of the century. The tune, in all cases, resembles the Liverpool song, "Johnny Todd". The song thus selectively incorporates from Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal traditions. Most particularly, "Jacky Jacky" encapsulates the way that south eastern Aborigines accommodated a colonial presence by parodying, and thereby gaining some control over, existing stereotypes. Through this inversion, humour becomes a tactical weapon in a song of political protest played back to the majority culture.

The concept of the career is theorised as a means of bringing together the textual and institutional dimensions of writing and being a writer in a specific cultural economy. The guiding question of the argument which re-emerges in different ways in each chapter is: in what ways was it possible to write and to be a writer in a given time and place? Waten's career as a Russian-born, Jewish, Australian nationalist, communist and realist writer across the middle years of this century is, for the purposes of the argument, at once usefully exemplary and usefully marginal in relation to the literary establishment. His texts provide the central focus for individual chapters; at the same time each chapter considers a specific historical moment and a specific set of issues for Australian cultural history, and is to this extent self-contained. Recent work in narrative theory, literary sociology and Australian literary and cultural studies is brought together to revise accepted readings of Waten's texts and career, and to address significant absences or problems in Australian cultural history. That same year Louise E Rorabacher wrote a book-length study - Marjorie Barnard and M Barnard Eldershaw, after agreeing not to write about Barnard's private life. This led to many studies of the pair's joint literary output and short biographical studies and much misinformation, from scholars beguiled into believing Barnard's stories which were often deliberately disseminated to protect the secrecy of the affair that dominated her life between 1934 and 1942. A re-examination of her life and work is now necessary because there have been huge misunderstandings about other aspects of Barnard's life, too. Her habit of telling imaginary stories denigrating her father, led to him being maligned by his daughter's interviewers. Marjorie's commonest accusation was of her father's meanness, starting with her student allowance, but if the changing value of money is taken into account, her allowance (for pocket money) was extremely generous compared to wages of the time.

Rambling in Overdrive: Travelling Through Tasmanian Literature CA Cranston Two years ago I published an anthology of original and published writings about Tasmania titled Along these lines: From Trowenna to Tasmania1 — a mistake it turns out (as far as the title goes) as readers generally assume that Trowenna is some other place, rather than some other time. The idea was to situate various texts about Tasmania into context, so that when traveling the arterial highways of the heart- shaped island one was presented with stories and histories (time) that live on the sides of the road (place). This paper will address the theme of the conference (‘Originally Tasmanian. Creativity and Innovation in the Island State’) with a methodology similar to that ‘driving’ the anthology. It will examine the relationship between context (the origin) and text (the representation), and by implication, the relationship between natural and symbolic worlds. The ramble, which textually refers to the discursive — ideas, like automobiles, that ‘run about’ — will be accommodated, and as such will occasionally disrupt normal expectations of chronology, the historian’s purview. The motivation for the anthology came out of a need to experience at first hand niggling doubts about the textual construction of the island. I was a migrant so (in terms of the conference theme) I’m not ‘Originally Tasmanian’. I was living in a biotic community I knew nothing about and for which I had no language. I was presented with a textual culture I knew little about, and I was hungry for island stories.
