1 Chair’s Message

Frances K. Hackett ‘80 Chair Board of Governors

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. As chair of the Ramapo College Foundation Board of Governors and as a proud alumna, I welcome you to our 32nd Distinguished Citizens Dinner. This annual event has become a tradition at the College. It gives us the opportunity to gather and to recognize leaders in our community while also highlighting the programs, dedicated faculty, creative students and accomplished alumni who make up the Ramapo College family. I would also like to take this occasion to publicly acknowledge you, our donors, for your generous support and commitment to ensuring that our students benefit from a quality education.

Each year, I witness firsthand the impact our support has on hundreds of outstanding students who have been awarded scholarships. In meeting students and their families, I am always overwhelmed by the thanks we receive, and I hear over and over again about the difference that their scholarship has made in their lives. It gives me great pride to be able to say that some of these amazing students are here tonight. On their behalf, I thank each of you for investing in them.

2 Chair’s Message

Frances K. Hackett ‘80 Chair Board of Governors

This sentiment is particularly meaningful this year as we honor three of our alumni and one of our closest and dearest corporate sponsors. This year’s honorees embody so many of the qualities that make Ramapo College special, to me and to all of you – civic engagement, dedication to community service, hard work and persistence, and, most importantly, the desire to push boundaries, both personally and professionally.

It gives me great pleasure to honor Dr. Timothy M. Finley, class of ’94, an anesthesiologist practicing at Holy Name Medical Center, Mr. Don LaGreca, class of ’92, co-host of the Michael Kay Show on ESPN Radio; Mr. Glen Messina, class of ’85, president and chief executive officer of PHH Corporation; as well as Mr. Reza Rafizadeh, vice president of operations for campus services at Sodexo.

Your attendance at tonight’s event helps us continue Ramapo College’s tradition of excellence. Proceeds from the Distinguished Citizens Dinner provide scholarships for deserving students, allow faculty members to conduct research and to stay current in their areas of study, and support many campus programs and projects.

In closing, I thank all of you again for joining us and supporting the Ramapo College Foundation.

3 Honoree

Dr. Timothy M. Finley ‘94

Dr. Timothy Finley is an anesthesiologist practicing at Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, New Jersey. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Ramapo College in 1994 and went on to graduate from UMDNJ School of Osteopathic Medicine in 1998. He completed a residency in anesthesiology at Drexel University College of Medicine.

For several years, Dr. Finley traveled regularly to Haiti as a volunteer to offer his medical services. He did so again recently following the earthquake that devastated the country. He serves on the Doctors’ Counsel of Sending Our Love to Haiti, a local organization formed by churches and synagogues to sponsor fundraising events. He was also honored recently by the UJA Federation of Northern New Jersey for his work on behalf of the earthquake victims.

In addition to his volunteer work, Dr. Finley has donated generously to Haiti earthquake relief efforts and has undertaken a fundraising effort to provide scholarships for two Haitian students to attend Ramapo College. Dr. Finley serves on the Dean’s Advisory Board for the School of Theoretical and Applied Science. He received the President’s Award of Merit at 2011 Commencement Ceremony.

4 Remarks Dr. Timothy M. Finley ‘94

President and Mrs. Mercer, members of the Foundation Board of Governors, Honorees, Family and Friends, I am humbled and grateful to be included among the very distinguished honorees being recognized tonight by my alma mater, Ramapo College. Ramapo changed my life. My experience at Ramapo College made it possible for me to achieve personal and career goals that are way beyond what I ever could have dreamed of when I dropped out of school in the ninth grade.

Becoming a physician was not anything I ever thought about when I was growing up, and I’m pretty sure that none of my friends or members of my family, or any of my teachers in Hackensack Schools would ever have believed that medicine would become my profession. When I left school, I had a short and unsuccessful stint as a fish monger, and then I found a job in construction.

But I have been fortunate throughout my life to have met people who have helped, supported and mentored me – from Bob Wilson, the plumber I worked with when I was 20 years old and who gave me the advice that I try to live by: that one has to be a “giver” in this life, and influenced me to become a hospital volunteer in my off hours; to the physicians in the department where I volunteered who encouraged me to get my General Equivalency Diploma, go to college and actually consider medicine as a career; to Dr. Ed Saiff and Dr. Rena Bacon, my mentors at Ramapo College who never let me deviate from my newly-found goal of medical school; to Dr. Peter and Jackie Mercer, who nurtured my academic career at Ramapo and became my dear friends; to my colleagues at Bergen Anesthesia Associates; Michael Maron, chief executive officer of Holy Name Medical Center and Dr. David Butler, who recruited me to accompany him on medical missions to Haiti for the last 10 years and opened my eyes to the needs of the impoverished communities at the Hôpital Sacre Couer in Milot, Haiti.

Ramapo College went out on a limb in accepting me. I had a ninth grade education and never took the SATs, but I was accepted through the “application-through-sponsorship program.” My sponsors were the doctors who encouraged me to consider medical school when I was a hospital volunteer. I am truly indebted to those doctors for seeing something in me, and Ramapo for giving me, an “unconventional” student, a chance and legitimizing me – allowing me to achieve the credentials I needed to apply to medical school.

I am grateful to Ramapo and very proud that the College continues to open its doors to students with promise who don’t fit the typical student profile, including the students from Haiti that we sponsor each year. It is gratifying to look back and remember my days at Ramapo, where it really began with me.

Congratulations to my fellow honorees and many thanks to Dr. Peter and Jackie Mercer, the Foundation Board and the Dinner Committee. This is a very special night for me, I am grateful to all of you who made the evening possible and to everyone who is here to support me.

6 Remarks Don LaGreca ‘92

I’m so very thrilled by this honor. It’s days like this when you are taken back to the turning points and people that got you here. It all started with my decision to go to Ramapo College. However, I didn’t go to become a radio personality. I went for . You see I was a pitcher at Don Bosco Tech and thought I had a future in it. Crazy right? Well it was. I was cut when a few pitchers from Army transferred over to Ramapo. Dream over. My senior year in high school I won a communications award, thanks to Mr. Robertson, VP at Don Bosco Tech. So off to the radio station, WRPR. If I can’t play it, than maybe I can talk about it. That’s where I met Professor Andre Perry. Andre taught me about radio and the business of radio, how to get in it and stay in it. Of course I didn’t know it at the time, fighting him the whole way thinking that I knew it all, but now I see how right he always was. The radio station is where it all came together for me. Ramapo College allowed me to work with all the equipment and work all the jobs that allowed me to hone my skills and get me a great start in the business. It’s also the place where I met Tim Reid. Andre always taught us about networking. Tim Reid started it all. Tim worked at K-Rock, then a classic radio station in NYC. Let the networking begin. 18 years of networking in less than a minute... Tim introduced me to Maria Malito, a DJ at the station. Maria was married to Pete Walker who worked at Phone Programs, a company that owned Sports Phone. I got a job there. I met Andy Roth who knew Steve Malzberg who worked at Shadow Sports and handled updates for 1010 WINS. On 1010 WINS Mark Chernoff, PD for WFAN heard me and hired me for updates there. Then, when ESPN Radio started in NYC, the person that helped in the hiring process was Steve Malzberg. And here I am, a combination of hard work and a lot of people working hard to help me... my Mom and Dad, Mr. Robertson, Andre Perry, Tim Reid, Andy Roth, Steve Malzberg, Mark Chernoff, Tim McCarthy, Michael Kay, Gregg Buttle, Dave Maloney, Kenny Albert and so many other. Ramapo got me started, it laid the foundation for me and my career. That’s why I’m so proud that I went to this school and so very proud to be honored here today.

Glen A. Messina ‘85

Glen A. Messina serves as president and chief executive officer (CEO) of PHH Corporation and as a member of the company’s Board of Directors. Mr. Messina joined PHH as chief operating officer in July of 2011 with more than 25 years of management experience, 17 of those with General Electric Company (GE). His roles at GE included chief financial officer (CFO) of the company's $6.9 billion equipment services business as well as CEO, and earlier CFO, of GE's mortgage services business, which was one of the top ten mortgage lenders in the with $400 million in revenue. Most recently, Mr. Messina served as CEO of GE Chemical and Monitoring Solutions, a global water and specialty chemicals services business, with $1.2 billion in revenue and 3,000 employees in more than 100 countries. Mr. Messina earned a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Ramapo College and an MBA in Finance from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He is a Board Member of the Catholic Partnership Schools and a member of CEOs Against Cancer. Mr. Messina lives in South Jersey with his wife and three children.

8 Remarks Glen Messina ‘85 Thank you President Mercer, the Foundation Board of Governors, and the faculty and friends of Ramapo. I am truly honored to receive this recognition and to be selected to join other accomplished and distinguished citizens of Ramapo. I would also like to congratulate the other recipients this evening.

My path to Ramapo was somewhat unique. My college experience started at a different school, but I quickly learned that I was not a good fit. In fact, my first school strongly suggested that I would likely be unsuccessful at any institution of higher learning. Thankfully, I chose to disagree and searched for another college that would be a better fit for me. After my first visit at Ramapo, I knew this is where I wanted to be. Ramapo was a second chance for me, the school welcomed me with open arms, and it proved to be the perfect fit. The culture here is one of complete and total support for its students. I can tell you from experience this is not always the case at other schools.

What sets Ramapo apart are the people. The college and its faculty have a vested interest in the success of the student body. The faculty readily provided one-on-one guidance when needed, taught from a practical business perspective, served as educators and mentors, and demonstrated genuine concern for and interest in their students. As most of my classes were in the evenings due to my work schedule, many of my evening professors had careers outside of Ramapo. It was clear that they chose to teach because of their passion and desire to make a difference, and shape the minds of the future.

Helping people is a critical element of our society, and that was modeled by the faculty at Ramapo. It was the people at Ramapo that made the difference for me. It was here that I discovered my interests, gained an understanding of the business world and an appreciation for learning, and, maybe most important of all, made me want to learn.

When I reflect back on my time here, I learned the value and importance of investing in the success of others. This demands a commitment to forge a deeper connection with people and be genuine in your desire to do so. I have had the privilege and good fortune of working at large corporations for most of my career, and today I serve as the chief executive officer of a New Jersey-based company that has over 6,000 employees. One of our core values is “we are committed to our employees’ success.” I firmly believe for a company to be successful you must tap into the will of the people. You achieve this through building engagement and establishing an environment of integrity, transparency, openness and compassion. Good leaders build a connection with their employees. They foster a culture that inspires, challenges and appreciates its employees. This belief was instilled in me at Ramapo and remains with me today.

I am grateful to Ramapo and its faculty who helped me receive an education that is second to none and for giving me a second chance. I must of course give thanks to my wife, Suzanne, for her love and unconditional support, and my three children, Michael, Nicole, and Lilly, who bring me so much happiness each and every day of our lives. They are my inspiration and what drives me.

Thank you again for this wonderful award and for allowing me to be a part of this great event.

Reza Rafizadeh

Reza Rafizadeh began his career with Sodexo in 1988. During his tenure, his responsibilities have included: retail , director of board operations, director of retail operations, general manager, district manager, regional director of operations and vice president of operations. He supports Campus Services partnerships in Philadelphia, New Jersey and New York. Mr. Rafizadeh draws upon his experience to support Ramapo’s on-site team in everything they do. He provides the on-site team with a continuous flow of new ideas, benchmarking standards, problem-solving, access to regional and national resources, and developing long-range strategic plans for the growth and strength of partnerships. Mr. Rafizadeh also acts as the facilitator between senior administrators and partners and Sodexo’s national and global resources. He is always available to discuss issues outside of the day-to-day routine. He is Ramapo’s key partner for long-term strategy and planning, with the ability to provide high-level commitments and ensure that things are done as agreed. Mr. Rafizadeh maintains personal involvement with the College’s operations by working closely with the district managers to establish program objectives. He gives attention to detail and monitors standards of quality in every area of the operation. His mission is to exceed customer expectations. He ensures the management team stays in touch with the changes in the campus environment and that industry improvements continue to be reflected in your program. He helps the team to provide the best possible service by sharing the best practices from different campuses and partnerships. Most importantly, he provides leadership and brings support to the district managers in providing a long-range strategic plan for growth and excellence. This support encompasses all areas of Sodexo’s expertise, be it food, facilities, housekeeping, energy audits, facility improvements and construction, or other areas of enhancing and improving the student experience.

10 Remarks Reza Rafizadeh I am honored to be a recipient of the 2013 Ramapo College Distinguished Citizens Award. It is humbling to be included with such a distinguished group of honorees. I offer my most sincere congratulations to Dr. Timothy Finley, Mr. Don LaGrecca and Mr. Glen Messina.

With this recognition as a Ramapo College Distinguished Citizen, I have developed a deep sense of personal pride and professional fulfillment. My close association with the hospitality services at Ramapo College, William Patterson University, Montclair State University, The College of New Jersey, and are hallmarks of my career. New Jersey has developed a system for higher education that is an extraordinarily diverse and rich asset for the citizens of this State and beyond.

In the last six years, I have forged a very close relationship, specifically with Ramapo College. In that time, I have witnessed the astonishing growth Ramapo College has experienced under the leadership of President Mercer. That leadership has made Ramapo College one of the premier institutions within New Jersey’s state college system.

The mission of Sodexo is rooted in our Spirit of Service, “Making Every Day a Better Day.” That is what more than 125,000 of our valued people strive to do for our guests each and everyday, all over this great country. This spirit is closely aligned with the spirit of progress and advancement at Ramapo College. Residential student growth, new programs and degrees and first class faculty are what have made Ramapo a leader in Higher Education.

Our two organizations have been partners in student services and development for more than 20 years. This partnership is deep and is getting stronger each year. We are honored to be servicing this institution’s students, faculty, staff and alumni. Ramapo students see our people at least three times a day. For many this is more than they see their individual faculty. For most incoming students, the college journey may be the first time they are away from home. Ramapo and Sodexo are committed to making their stay at the college as “homelike” as possible. We do this without taking away their opportunity for growth and independence. The work that we do together creates exceptional student experiences and it drives results in the classroom and beyond. We want the student to be challenged by the faculty, not by a lack of hospitality or difficulty in achieving a high quality of daily campus living.

Our shared connection to student success makes me proud. Most importantly I am proud of our deep and enduring, vested relationship and I am looking forward to many more years of service to this institution. This is a great place and I have come to love it dearly.

Once again, I am honored to receive this distinction, and I thank each and every one of you.

13 President’s Message

Dr. Peter P. Mercer President Ramapo College of New Jersey

Dear Guests, Welcome to the 32nd Ramapo College of New Jersey Distinguished Citizens Dinner. Thank you for joining us!

On behalf of the Ramapo College Board of Trustees, faculty, students, and staff, I am pleased to recognize our Distinguished Citizen honorees: Dr. Timothy M. Finley ’94, Anesthesiologist Practitioner at Holy Name Medical Center Don LaGreca, ’92, Co-host of the Michael Kay Show on ESPN Radio 98.7 FM Glen Messina, ’85, President and CEO at PHH Corporation Reza Rafizadeh, Vice President of Operations for Campus Services at Sodexo

These four individuals have made significant contributions to their professions and their communities. In so doing, they have exhibited many of the leadership qualities that we at Ramapo College seek to instill in our graduates. Our honorees, like our graduates, embody the necessary skills, knowledge and ethical standards to develop new ways of thinking, engaging, and contributing to society.

It is no coincidence that Ramapo College, in our efforts to develop student leadership skills in the context of a liberal arts curriculum, has also enjoyed some major institutional achievements.

14 President’s Message

Dr. Peter P. Mercer President Ramapo College of New Jersey

Ramapo College continues to attract impressive faculty and staff, highly qualified students, and renowned intellectual leaders. During the past two years, such luminaries as Juan Gonzalez, renowned journalist and columnist; Joyce Carol Oates, acclaimed author and Nobel Prize nominee; Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor of the United States Supreme Court; and Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel Laureate and Fulbright Scholar, have visited our campus and shared how they have pushed the boundaries of their respective disciplines.

As the funding for higher education continues its ebb and flow (actually, more ebb than flow), the year ahead will not be without challenges; however, our college is well-prepared to meet them, evidence our recently endorsed Strategic Plan and Campus Facilities Master Plan. Furthermore, Ramapo College’s reputation among its constituencies continues to strengthen. In the latest edition of “America’s Best Colleges,” released by U.S. News & World Report, Ramapo was once again named among the top schools in the Best Regional Universities North category. Also, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine again ranked Ramapo among its “100 Best Values in Public Colleges.” Our college is one of only three New Jersey public institutions of higher education included in the list.

As always, we remain grateful for the support and talents of our alumni, parents, friends, and board members as well as our faculty, students, and staff. Cheers to a wonderful evening and an exciting future!

Sincerely, Peter P. Mercer President

Cathleen T. Davey Executive Director, Ramapo College Foundation Vice President, Institutional Advancement

Good Evening,

As we celebrate the 32nd Annual Distinguished Citizens Dinner, I am reminded of how fortunate we are each year to be able to recognize honorees that have done so much for their communities and for Ramapo College. Our 2014 honorees, recognized for their lifetime achievements, continue to set an impressive example for our students to emulate. Congratulations to Dr. Timothy M. Finley ‘94, Mr. Don LaGreca ‘92, Mr. Glen Messina ‘85, and Mr. Reza Rafizadeh. Without your incredible support of the College, we would not be able to prepare our students to push boundaries and become successful leaders.

Tonight, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Mr. George Ruotolo Jr., will receive a ceremonial check from the Chair of the Board of Governors, Ms. Frances Hackett, in the amount of $7,644,534. This check represents the amazing and generous donations from you - our guests at special events, our Board Members, alumni, friends, parents, faculty and staff who have supported the Annual Fund or the Capital Campaign. As well, this check represents the competitive grants awarded and investment returns. We know this support is given because you recognize the excellence of our faculty, academic programs, and College leadership.

I am honored to share that the "Further Our Promise" Comprehensive Capital Campaign has to date secured $49.8 million toward the goal of $50 million. However, I am more excited to share that we are truly helping our students to learn, create, discover, heal, and challenge in ways that set Ramapo apart from other public liberal arts colleges. All this plays a significant role in preparing our students for a lifetime of achievement. The new Adler Center for Nursing Excellence, the complete

renovation of all our science facilities, the new Center for Excellence in British Studies in our Salameno School of Humanities and Global Studies, the Sharp Sustainability Education Center, the new Career Pathways Program in the Anisfield School of Business, and the new Les Paul Recording Studio in the School of Contemporary Arts are just some examples of how your generosity has ensured that our students have the best hands-on experience possible.

The tremendous growth in Ramapo's Endowment Funds in this Campaign enhances opportunities for students to study abroad, for students to intern in not-for-profit organizations, for high achievers to be recognized for academic excellence, and for students with financial need to be given the opportunity to attend their first -choice college. These scholarship awards are possible because of a 60% increase in the fair market value of our endowment over the last three years. A strong investment return last year of 11.5% allows the Foundation to award more than $500,000 this year in named scholarships.

We truly celebrate and appreciate each and every gift you give to Ramapo. Together all of our donors make a significant difference to the College. This momentum and success is a result of your belief and support of this exceptional institution. You encourage us to be better and to build upon our distinctive strengths. You allow us to help students push their boundaries, expand their imagination, explore and innovate. And you allow us to "Further Our Promise" to our students.

As always, I extend my heartfelt thanks.
