Leaves alternate, opposite, or verticillate, usually simple; stipules absent; leaf blade entire or slightly incised, rarely lobed or imparipinnate. Inflorescences terminal or axillary, cymose, corymbiform, spiculate, racemose, paniculate, or sometimes reduced to a solitary flower. Flowers usually bisexual, sometimes unisexual in Rhodiola (when plants dioecious or rarely gynodioecious), actinomorphic, (3 or)4– 6(–30)-merous. Sepals almost free or basally connate, persistent. Petals free or connate. Stamens as many as petals in 1 series or 2 × as many in 2 series. Nectar scales at or near base of carpels. Follicles sometimes fewer than sepals, free or basally connate, erect or spreading, membranous or leathery, 1- to many seeded. Seeds small; endosperm scanty or not developed. About 35 genera and over 1500 species: Africa, America, Asia, Europe; 13 genera (two endemic, one introduced) and 233 species (129 endemic, one introduced) in China. Abstract A survey of plants growing on walls in North Cyprus resulted in a preliminary checklist of some 200 vascular plant species. This corresponds to more than 15 percent of all species known for North Cyprus. In comparison to Europe the amounts of therophytes, phanerophytes and geophytes are considerably higher. 2. Introduction The construction of walls was developed in different culture groups (Mediterranean area, China, India, Central and South America) presumably independent from each other. Only with walls a permanent banking of farmland and wine yards was possible. The building up of cities and fortifications was rendered possible in an unexpected way. The city wall of Jericho is often noted as one of the very first ones (ca. 7000 B. C.). Depending on the region, the material used, their age, surrounding and state of preservation walls offer numerous micro-habitats and living areas for many organisms. Therefore they are in the focus of nature conservation. On the other hand they themselves are strongly endangered because nowadays walls are only seldom built up from stone or bricks and lime mortar. Nowadays concrete is mostly in use. During reconstruction commonly cement mortar is used instead of lime mortar which prevents colonisation of the wall fissures. -

Saussurea Journal de la Société botanique de Genève 41 Société fondée en 1875 2011 La Société botanique de Genève a été fondée le 1er mars 1875 par cinq jeunes naturalistes. Ses buts convergent tous vers l’étude des divers aspects de la botanique au sens large du terme : la floristique, la taxonomie, la physiologie, l’écologie, etc. Pour les réaliser, la Société organise des réunions mensuelles dans le cadre desquelles des conférenciers sont invités à parler d’un sujet traitant de la botanique. D’autre part, chaque année, au printemps et en été, de nombreuses excursions sont organisées dans les environs de Genève, ailleurs en Suisse ou en Europe, dans le but de mieux connaître la flore de ces régions. Finalement, la Société édite une revue annuelle, le “Saussurea” mêlant la vulgarisation aux textes purement scientifiques. A ces activités régulières s’ajoutent des activités particulières comme, par exemple, le projet de cartographie des plantes à fleurs et des fougères du canton de Genève, ainsi que la visite d’instituts ou de jardins botaniques, ou encore la publication des “Mémoires de la Société Botanique”. Numerous works were carried out on wetland vascular plants from Morocco, but it not obvious to come up with a comprehensive synthesis or an update of the data. To highlight the current state of knowledge on wetland facultative vascular plants from Morocco, a synthesis of previous related works was carried out. Thus, an inventory of 338 plant taxa, belonging to 220 genera and 72 botanical families, has been established. The endemic taxa are represented by 65 species and subspecies. In addition, 58 species and subspecies are included in the IUCN red list. The geographical distribution and, where appropriate, the auto-ecological data have also been reported for each taxon inventoried. Kuwait is an arid desert country with a small flora of only 402 species. This flora is endangered by environmental factors, overgrazing, and human activities.
