FLopen 2020 Packet K: FST expansion pack Edited by: Taylor Harvey and Jonathen Settle Written by: Mateo Javier Acosta, Mike Bentley, Nicholas Dai, Anthony Delgado, William Grossman, Shawn Jarrard, Zachary Knecht, Leo Law, Lalit Maharjan, Tracy Mirkin, Khanh Nguyen, Grant Peet, Ani Perumalla, Jason Zappulla, and the editors Tossups 1. These people’s love of tobacco is attested by the fact that their word for “poor” literally means “without tobacco.” In the creation myth of these people, women are born from the wabu fruit while men are born from the silver blood of the moon. These people’s multi-village, plantain-heavy feasts often feature ritualized chest slapping duels. These people wear a distinctive bowl-shaped haircut with the topmost crown of the head shaved bald. A widely disputed book by Patrick (*) Tierney accused James Neel of purposely exacerbating a measles outbreak among these people; that book is Darkness at El Dorado. Films of these people like “The Axe Fight'' purport to show their culture as one characterized by “constant warfare.” For 10 points, name this Amazonian tribe who live in Brazil and Venezuela, who were called “a fierce people” in an ethnography by Napoleon Chagnon. ANSWER: Yanomami [accept Yąnomamö; accept Yanomama; prompt on Amazonian people until “Amazonian” is read; prompt on Indigenous peoples of America; prompt on American Indians; prompt on Native Americans; prompt on Amerindians] <Social Science: Sociology/Anthropology, TH> 2. In a novel by this author, the narrator uses the codenames “Buzz” and “The Black Mamba” in her childhood journal, except in one reading: “Dear God, I wish Nana would just die already, please, just let this be over.” That novel by this author interweaves flashbacks of the narrator’s Pentecostal upbringing in Huntsville with her life in the present performing optogenetic experiments on mice.

Appendix 1 Mori Building Brand Movie “DESIGNING TOKYO” For over 60 years, Mori Building has been promoting urban development under a philosophy of "Create Cities, Nature Cities," and envisioning the future of cities and the future of people’s lifestyles. Focusing steadily on futuristic cities and Tokyo’s evolution, the company’s numerous urban redevelopment projects in central Tokyo—including ARK Hills, Omotesando Hills, Roppongi Hills and Toranomon Hills—have consistently offered the most advanced proposals for a better city in each era. Urban development is the process of creating a better future by imagining new ways for people to live, work, and interact in cities that can continuously evolve and mature to keep up with ever-changing society, even after its completion. Mori Building Brand Movie “DESIGNING TOKYO” vividly recreates urban scenery and culture (including symbolic persons from each era) realized by the company’s various projects through cutting-edge technologies, ultimately to consider the future that lays ahead for Tokyo. ■Adverting Agency and Production Companies Advertising agency: DENTSU INC. Production company: Dentsu Craft Tokyo CG production company: jitto/MARK/ OMNIBUS JAPAN “DESIGNING TOKYO” Creating cities is work that takes decades. It could be said that, the minute we start, we are creating the future. Creating cities is work that never ends. The lives of city dwellers constantly evolve with the times. We focus on the future, putting the whole of Tokyo in perspective. We raise the appeal of Tokyo, and raise the potential of this country. Step by step, project by project, we are creating a Tokyo that is yet to exist.

  • Ryuichi Sakamoto
Ryuichi Sakamoto Born in 1952, Sakamoto released his debut solo album Thousand Knives in 1978. In the same year, he formed the pioneering electronic band Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) with Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi. Since YMO disbanded in 1983, he has continued to be active in and beyond the realm of media in the fields of music, movies, publishing, advertising and others. In 1984, he won a British Academy Film Award among other accolades for Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, which he starred in and composed the score for. He later won an Academy Award and a Grammy among other honors for his score to the 1987 film The Last Emperor. He has since changed his career base to the West and earned an international reputation for pursuing innovative sounds. In Japan, Sakamoto advocated the revitalization of the nation’s music industry and established the commons music community in 2006 to provide common ground for music-related activities transcending genres and categories. Since the release of his opera LIFE in 1999, Sakamoto has often made reference to environmental and peace issues in his works. In 2000, he contributed to the efforts of Jubilee 2000 – an international movement calling for the cancellation of debts weighing on the world’s poorest countries by the year 2000 with supporters including Bono from rock band U2 and Bob Geldof. In 2001, he founded artists’ power, an artists’ organization advocating the use of renewable energy. He joined fellow members Takeshi Kobayashi and Kazutoshi Sakurai in founding the NGO ap bank in 2003. • Psaudio Copper
Issue 109 APRIL 20TH, 2020 This issue’s cover: Judy Garland (1922 – 1969). One of the most iconic actresses, recording artists and performers of all time. Though haunted by personal struggles, she attained greatness that few ever achieved. Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue. Like everyone else, we at Copper have been impacted by the coronavirus, whether by disruption in our work and home lives to financial impact, stress, anxiety and writer’s block. And yes, one of us contracted the virus – thankfully, he’s doing OK. So, over the next few issues you might see some changes – temporary absence of some writers, a different balance of articles and other differences from the usual. We trust you’ll understand, and we look forward to when these pages, and our lives, reach a new equilibrium. It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Stereophile deputy editor Art Dudley. He was one of the finest men ever to grace the audio industry. My tribute to him is in these pages. Also in this issue: Rich Isaacs begins a series on Italian progressive rock with a look at the great PFM (Premiata Forneria Marconi). Ken Sander takes us on a wild rock and roll ride with Eric Burdon and War. Professor Larry Schenbeck continues his series on immersive sound. WL Woodward gets jazzed about bass. John Seetoo concludes his series on legendary Yellow Magic Orchestra/film composer/techno-pop pioneer Ryuichi Sakamoto. In a special report we ask audio companies how they’re responding to the COVID-19 crisis.

Eight years later, he entered Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, earning a B.A. in composition, and then a masters degree with a concentration in electronic and ethnic music. In 1977, Sakamoto began working as a composer, arranger and studio musician with Japan's most popular rock, jazz, and classical artists, and within a few years, he became a noted producer, arranger and keyboardist. In 1978, Sakamoto released his first solo album and formed Yellow Magic Orchestra along with Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi. Y.M.O. was immediately recognized as an international sensation from Japan. Their second album sold well over a million copies, led to a world tour, and made them, with Kraftwerk, the kings of technopop. Releasing eleven albums over the next five years, YMO developed a following that continues to the present day. Fans have constructed WorldWideWeb-sites dedicated to them, and YMO and Sakamoto's influence on the rave, techno and ambient movements is widely recognized. Sakamoto's interest in different types of music-- jazz, bossa nova, modern classical, dub and gamelan-- was evident in his writing for YMO, his own solo albums, and starting in 1983 with 'Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence', a series of soundtracks. That year, Sakamoto left YMO to pursue his career as a solo artist and to pursue his interest in "world music".
