Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 INTRODUCTION. The Vittarieae, as described by Christensen (1), comprises five genera, viz. Vjfrfrftrja, Monogramma,. Antronhvum. Hecistopterist and Anetium. all of whicij are epiphytic forms growing in the damp forests of the Old and New;World Tropics. All of them possess creeping rhizomes on which the frortds are arranged more or less definitely in two rows on the dorsal surface. The fronds are simple in outline with the exception of those of Heoistonteris which are dichotomously branched. The venation of the fronds is reticulate except in Heoistonteris where there is an open, dichotomous system of veins^An interesting feature, which has proved to be valuable as a diagnostic character, is the presence of "spicule cells" in the epidermis. -

Intro 1996 National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands The Fish and Wildlife Service has prepared a National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1996 National Summary (1996 National List). The 1996 National List is a draft revision of the National List of Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1988 National Summary (Reed 1988) (1988 National List). The 1996 National List is provided to encourage additional public review and comments on the draft regional wetland indicator assignments. The 1996 National List reflects a significant amount of new information that has become available since 1988 on the wetland affinity of vascular plants. This new information has resulted from the extensive use of the 1988 National List in the field by individuals involved in wetland and other resource inventories, wetland identification and delineation, and wetland research. Interim Regional Interagency Review Panel (Regional Panel) changes in indicator status as well as additions and deletions to the 1988 National List were documented in Regional supplements. The National List was originally developed as an appendix to the Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (Cowardin et al.1979) to aid in the consistent application of this classification system for wetlands in the field.. The 1996 National List also was developed to aid in determining the presence of hydrophytic vegetation in the Clean Water Act Section 404 wetland regulatory program and in the implementation of the swampbuster provisions of the Food Security Act. While not required by law or regulation, the Fish and Wildlife Service is making the 1996 National List available for review and comment. -

CALIFORNIA’S NATIVE FERNS A survey of our most common ferns and fern relatives Native ferns come in many sizes and live in many habitats • Besides living in shady woodlands and forests, ferns occur in ponds, by streams, in vernal pools, in rock outcrops, and even in desert mountains • Ferns are identified by producing fiddleheads, the new coiled up fronds, in spring, and • Spring from underground stems called rhizomes, and • Produce spores on the backside of fronds in spore sacs, arranged in clusters called sori (singular sorus) Although ferns belong to families just like other plants, the families are often difficult to identify • Families include the brake-fern family (Pteridaceae), the polypody family (Polypodiaceae), the wood fern family (Dryopteridaceae), the blechnum fern family (Blechnaceae), and several others • We’ll study ferns according to their habitat, starting with species that live in shaded places, then moving on to rock ferns, and finally water ferns Ferns from moist shade such as redwood forests are sometimes evergreen, but also often winter dormant. Here you see the evergreen sword fern Polystichum munitum Note that sword fern has once-divided fronds. Other features include swordlike pinnae and round sori Sword fern forms a handsome coarse ground cover under redwoods and other coastal conifers A sword fern relative, Dudley’s shield fern (Polystichum dudleyi) differs by having twice-divided pinnae. Details of the sori are similar to sword fern Deer fern, Blechnum spicant, is a smaller fern than sword fern, living in constantly moist habitats Deer fern is identified by having separate and different looking sterile fronds and fertile fronds as seen in the previous image. -

The species studied were those used in a published phylogenetic analysis based on chloroplast DNA regions. Four additional Polypodiaceae species were examined for comparative purposes. We used scanning electron microscopy to image 580 specimens of spores from 29 species of the 48 recognised taxa. Four discrete and ten continuous characters were scored for each species and optimised on to the previously published molecular tree. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed that verrucae width/verrucae length and verrucae width/spore length index and outline were the most important morphological characters. The first two axes explain, respectively, 56.3% and 20.5% of the total variance. Regular depressed and irregular prominent verrucae were present in derived species. However, the morphology does not support any molecular clades. According to our analyses, the evolutionary pathway of the ornamentation of the spores is represented by depressed irregularly verrucae to folded perispore to depressed regular verrucae to irregularly prominent verrucae. E. Smith, and Marattia Swartz. Epidermal patterns, adult stomata, indument, and idioblasts were studied. Hill and Camus (1986) made an overview of characters of some extant species of Marattiales as part of a cladistic study of extant and fossil members of the order. The epidermal characters they used were subsidiary cells of the stomata, dimensions of the stomata, walls of epidermal cells, and idioblasts. The only character of indument they included in their study was the presence or absence of scales. Rolleri et al. (1987) made the first detailed study dealing with pinna and pinnule indument in the Marattiaceae, although Holttum (1978) had made some general comments on petiole and rhizome scales of Angiopteris, illustrating two species. He suggested that Angiopteris pinna trichomes were diagnostic but needed detailed study. Rolleri et al. (1987) strongly pointed out that epidermal characters are diagnostic at the species level in the Marattiaceae and speculated on generic affinities within the Marattiales. Adult epidermis was described according to the terminology of Rolleri and Deferrari (1986) and Rolleri et al. (1987). Adult stomata were described following the criteria of Stace (1965),van Cotthem (1970, 1971),and Wilkinson (1979). It is a product of a collaborative effort of four Federal agencies: the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service. The NWPL has many uses, but it is specifically designed for use in wetland delineation for establishing the extent of Federal jurisdictional of wetland boundaries. To be listed in the NWPL, a plant must be rooted in soil, so there is a direct relationship between a plant’s occurrence and its preference for hydric soils. This relationship, coupled with the plant’s frequency of occurrence in wetlands, is used to place it in one of five categories representing the probability that the plant occurs in a wetland. Many species are considered to be epiphytes, but they represent various life forms, ranging from purely epiphytic to frequently occurring on the ground. Based on a literature review of 192 species across the United States and its territories, we determined which species fell into four categories of epiphytic life forms or are terrestrial and should not be considered epiphytes. -

Rhizome pruinose, 2–3 mm in diameter; rhizome scales 3.0–3.6 × 0.7–1.0 mm, 12–15 cells wide at the middle length, ovate-lanceolate, brown, clathrate except for marginal cells (only slightly clathrate), biauriculate at the base, with roundish cells except for narrowly oblong cells along the central axis
