Walter Camp Football Foundation Names 2011 Football Championship Subdivision All-America Team

NEW HAVEN, CT – Four repeat defensive players headline the Walter Camp Football Foundation 2011 Football Championship Subdivision All-America team. The team was selected by the head coaches and sports information directors of the Football Championship Subdivision schools and certified by the accounting and auditing firm, Marcum LLP. Three finalists – LB Matt Evans (New Hampshire), DL Brent Russell (Georgia Southern) and DB Trumaine Johnson (Montana) – lead the All-America defensive unit. Evans had 165 tackles and three interceptions for the Wildcats, while Russell totaled 14.5 tackles for loss and six sacks from his nose tackle position. Johnson had 50 tackles and two interceptions from his cornerback position. Punter David Harrington (Idaho State) is the fourth repeat All-American. Harrington averaged 48.7 yards per punt this season. Two finalists for the Award - RB Shakir Bell (Indiana State) and QB (Eastern Washington) – lead the offensive unit. The 2011 Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Year, Bell rushed for 1,670 yards and 14 touchdowns – averaging 151.8 yards per game. Mitchell led the FCS in passing yards (4,009) and touchdowns (33) during the regular-season. The Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Year completed 318-of-503 attempts (63.2 percent) and had four 400-yard passing efforts. In all, players from eight different conferences and 21 institutions were represented on the 2011 Walter Camp FCS All-America team. The Big Sky Conferences had the most selections with eight players from six different schools, including three from Eastern Washington. The Southern Conference had five selections, while the Missouri Valley Conference had three. North Dakota State, which will play in the FCS Championship Game on January 7, had two All-America honorees.

Walter Camp, “The Father of American Football,” first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp – a former Yale University athlete and football coach – is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation – a New Haven based all-volunteer group – was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting All-America teams for the Football Bowl and Championship subdivisions.
