Next week is the last few days of school before break and ROC READ begins! Thank you to the RTA, Wegmans, and the Razorsharks for helping to make this program happen!

General Information for Everyone:

All students PreK through 12th grade are able to select their own book to read this month! All students are to take a book home with them over break. Encourage students to visit the public library branches. Many of these branches are running activities over break. There is also special programming at Teen Central in the Downtown Library. For more information visit the Monroe County Library System webpage at www.libraryweb.org. Promote, promote, promote! Encourage students to read over break. Whether it’s a book, a magazine or the back of the cereal box, every little bit counts. There are great incentives to read! o Wegmans meal coupons o Razorshark tickets for an upcoming game of your choice

K – 6 Teachers:

Please encourage your students to take a book to read over break! Building librarians may be under schedule constraints, so please work with them to get in and borrow holiday break reading materials. We would like every child to take a book home to read over break. In order to receive prizes, students must answer the questions that are in the attached form. Please follow the procedure below, so that students can claim their incentives:

Encourage students to read over break Copy and distribute the form with questions to students When students return from break collect the questions Answers are due by JANUARY 9th!! Keep a record (list) of which students turned them in. You can read the answers if you like, but do not have to. Please submit to your librarian the of students from each grade that turned in the questions by the end of the day on January 9th. Turn in the completed question forms to your librarian The coupons will be distributed once all of the numbers have been tallied (please keep your student lists for distribution)

7 – 12 Teachers:

In order to receive prizes, students must respond to the essay prompt that is in the attached letter. Please follow the procedures below, so that students can claim their free Wegmans meal coupon and Razorshark tickets.

Encourage students to read over break and complete a short essay (400-500 words) When students return from break collect completed essays Essays are due by JANUARY 9th! Keep a record (list) of which students turned in an essay. You can read the essays if you like, but do not have to. Please submit to your librarian the number of students from each of your classes that turned in an essay by the end of the day on January 9th. Turn in the completed essays to your librarian The coupons will be distributed once all of the numbers have been tallied (please keep your student lists for distribution)

Librarians:

Please encourage students to read over break! All questions and essays are due to teachers by JANUARY 9th! Staff has been asked to forward their student count and completed forms and essays to you. Please send one email to [email protected] indicating your school name and the total number of students broken down by grade level that turned in the questions/essay.

Deadline to submit your building numbers is January 11th

We are unable to get coupons printed until we have student counts to give to the donors. Please be considerate and submit your numbers on time. Students and staff need to be accountable for the deadlines. No forms will be accepted after January 11th.

RCSD ROC READ A Rochester City School District Vacation Reading Program

Students in grades Pre-Kindergarten-Grade Six are encouraged to enjoy a book with their family over the December 22nd through January 2nd Holiday Break. Students who participate in this ROC READ event will receive two coupons for two free $6 meals from Wegmans and two tickets to a Rochester Razor Sharks game! (Two meals and 2 basketball tickets per student.)

Students will bring books home from school to read, but please also visit a branch of the Monroe County Library. There are 11 branches throughout the City. The Monroe County Library System will also be offering special programs during the Holiday Break, and a full list is available at: http://www3.libraryweb.org.

Please turn in this completed form to your teacher between January 2nd and January 9th.

RCSD HOLIDAY ROC READ

Students in 7th – 12th grades are encouraged to read over the holiday break. You can read any book you choose, but there are lists of suggested titles if you’re looking for some inspiration – you can view the lists at: Monroe County Library Teen Book Lists https://sites.google.com/site/mclsteens/booklists 2012 Best Books for Young Adults http://www.ala.org/yalsa/bfya/2012

Please also visit a branch of the Monroe County or Rochester Public Libraries. There are 11 branches throughout the City. The Monroe County Library System is offering special programs throughout December. Check with your local branch to see what events and programs are scheduled.

After selecting and reading a book, students are asked to write a brief (300-500 words) essay answering one of these prompts:
