Understanding the Paris Commune On its 150th Anniversary The Women of Paris on the barricades at Place Blance defend the Commune. Introduction The Paris Commune of 1871 only lasted from March 18 to May 28, just 72 days, yet it is one of the most celebrated events in socialist history. It is a legend. Yet, what was it? What is it for us today? A model for socialists? A heroic failure? Negation of the state? Or the first workers’ government? Karl Marx wrote the most famous contemporary account, yet he failed to take up some of the Commune’s serious problems. Why? In Part I of this essay, below, I look at the events of the Commune as they developed, relying largely on the work of Jacques Rougerie, whom we might call a representative of the school of “history from below,” and of Carolyn J. Eichner, a historian of women in the Commune. (Where quotations have no footnote, they come from Rougerie’s books.) In Part II, which can be read online here or in print in the summer 2021 issue of New Politics, I look critically at Marx’s interpretation of the Commune to examine issues he declined to take up and the reason he neglected some important issues. Part I – The Commune as it Was The Emperor and the War War and a humiliating French defeat created the crisis that brought about the Paris Commune. On September 1, 1870 at the Battle of Sedan the French Emperor Louis Napoleon Bonaparte (Napoleon III), his government, and the French nation suffered a catastrophic defeat at the hands of the Prussian Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. -

Long Live the Revolutions: Fighting for France's Political Future in the Long Wake of the Commune, 1871-1880 Abstract The traumatic legacies of the Paris Commune and its harsh suppression in 1871 had a significant impact on the identities and voter outreach efforts of each of the chief political blocs of the 1870s. The political and cultural developments of this phenomenal decade, which is frequently mislabeled as calm and stable, established the Republic's longevity and set its character. Yet the Commune's legacies have never been comprehensively examined in a way that synthesizes their political and cultural effects. This dissertation offers a compelling perspective of the 1870s through qualitative and quantitative analyses of the influence of these legacies, using sources as diverse as parliamentary debates, visual media, and scribbled sedition on city walls, to explicate the decade's most important political and cultural moments, their origins, and their impact. -

Cuban Antifascism and the Spanish Civil War: Transnational Activism, Networks, and Solidarity in the 1930s Ariel Mae Lambe Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Ariel Mae Lambe All rights reserved ABSTRACT Cuban Antifascism and the Spanish Civil War: Transnational Activism, Networks, and Solidarity in the 1930s Ariel Mae Lambe This dissertation shows that during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) diverse Cubans organized to support the Spanish Second Republic, overcoming differences to coalesce around a movement they defined as antifascism. Hundreds of Cuban volunteers—more than from any other Latin American country—traveled to Spain to fight for the Republic in both the International Brigades and the regular Republican forces, to provide medical care, and to serve in other support roles; children, women, and men back home worked together to raise substantial monetary and material aid for Spanish children during the war; and longstanding groups on the island including black associations, Freemasons, anarchists, and the Communist Party leveraged organizational and publishing resources to raise awareness, garner support, fund, and otherwise assist the cause. The dissertation studies Cuban antifascist individuals, campaigns, organizations, and networks operating transnationally to help the Spanish Republic, contextualizing these efforts in Cuba’s internal struggles of the 1930s. It argues that both transnational solidarity and domestic concerns defined Cuban antifascism. First, Cubans confronting crises of democracy at home and in Spain believed fascism threatened them directly. Citing examples in Ethiopia, China, Europe, and Latin America, Cuban antifascists—like many others—feared a worldwide menace posed by fascism’s spread. -

THE SPANISH LEFT: ILLUSION AND REALITY Lorenzo Torres THE present crisis of the Spanish Left-and it is a real crisis we shall be discassing-is the result of a whole series of complex prob- lems, international as well as national. By national we mean primarily the growing lack of agreement between the policies and political activity of the parties of the traditional Left, and the actual situation in Spain. By international we refer to the crisis in the international workers' movement-the crisis of Stalinism, the Russo-Chinese con- troversy, the degeneration of Social-Democracy-all of which find an echo among the membership of the Spanish Workers' organiza- tions. These two sets of problems naturally interact one with the other. Within Spain. despite the present confusion, we are beginning to see emerge new critical forces, from within which a new socialist policy may come. That is the hope: of a programme for the future that will be based on Spanish and international realities and no longer on the out of date anti-Franco-ist dreams and disreputable compromises. The terrible defeat of 1939 naturally has taken many years before its effects have been overcome, even though a considerable number of working class leaders succeeded in escaping abroad. They, and the nucleus in Spain itself which in one way or another managed to escape being shot or imprisoned, rested all their hopes upon the defeat of Nazism and international Fascism. In 1945, on the morrow of the liberation of Europe from Fascism, the whole world seemed con- vinced that the Franco ri5gime would soon suffer a similar fate. -

First, we provide summary statistics, additional sensitivity checks and further evidence. Second, we provide details and sources on the data covering regional output and unemployment, trust, beliefs, attitudes and voting statistics. Third, we provide the classification of non-mainstream political parties’ political orientation (far-right, radical-left, populist, Eurosceptic and separatist) for all countries. 1 1. Summary Statistics, Additional Sensitivity Checks, and Further Evidence 1.1 Summary Statistics Appendix Table 1 reports the summary statistics at the individual level for all variables that we use from the ESS distinguishing between the pre-crisis period (2000-08) and the post-crisis period (2009-14). Panel A looks at all questions on general trust, trust in national and supranational institutions, party identification, ideological position on the left-right scale and beliefs on the European unification issue whereas in panel B we focus on attitudes to immigration. 1.2 Additional Sensitivity Checks Appendix Table 2 looks at the relationship between employment rates and voting for anti- establishment parties. Together we will embark Secretary-General on a journey through the matinée of World War II. This committee – to an even greater extent than other committees – is a role play committee, with the difference being that you are playing a historical figure in a historical period rather than representing a country. We will outline your positions, who held Chris Pang them, and their ideology and allegiance in the Personal Portfolios (to be Chief of Staff discussed later); however, as there is limited information on these people, and what happens in our committee will be different from real life, you will all have Eva Zhang some leeway with them. This means you will not need to motion for Director of Logistics moderated caucuses, unless you wish to force discussion on a specific topic for a fixed period of time. The Position of Women in European Society During the Early Twentieth
An Uncertain Depiction: The Spanish Civil War and Women of the Popular Front, 1936-1939. Spanish women of the Popular Front faced uncertain circumstances.1 In 1936, the Spanish government and various political bodies were locked in an intense battle that rose to the level of civil war. Society split along ideological lines, calling into question social structures, especially those regarding women.2 Although many women and their various political organizations fervently aided the Republican cause during the war and received initial praise from the Republican government, the women of the Popular Front were nevertheless not free of gendered societal norms.3 Leftist political organizations of the Popular Front rejected in rhetoric the subservient roles women occupied relative to men, but inequality and the persistence of traditional gender norms continued to affect Republican women. These traditional gender roles ascribed to women were especially evident in propaganda images. Although women had different experiences regionally and temporally, most contended with the traditional feminine norms deeply ingrained within Spanish society, even in the Republican zones.4 These female norms and roles primarily encompassed those associated with the home and the rearing of children. Women of the Popular Front battled to maintain the civic rights and gains made during the Second Republic. However, they faced both articulated and silent opposition from their deeply conservative society. This societal opposition to change is evident in examination of the ways women were treated by male-dominated political affiliates, regardless of political ideology and, more important in terms of the present research, the manner in which images of women were manipulated and defined in propaganda.
