Spread Light this Advent Season Tuesday, December 10th 7:00pm - 8:00pm Christ the King Church

“Lord Jesus, Master of both the light and the darkness, send your Holy Spirit upon our preparations for Christmas. We who have so much to do seek quiet spaces to hear your voice each day.

We who are anxious over many things look forward to your coming among us. We who are blessed in so many ways long for the complete joy of your kingdom.

We whose hearts are heavy seek the joy of your presence. We are your people, walking in darkness, yet seeking the light. To you we say, ‘Come Lord Jesus!’ “ -Henri J.M. Nouwen

Come join us for an hour and slow down long enough to experience the peace of Advent waiting through Song, Scripture and a Contemplative Prayer Experience.

The time is here for us to prepare for the coming of Jesus, for his first coming in Bethlehem and for his final coming at the end of time. Both comings encourage us to reject sin and the ways of darkness, and to embrace goodness and the ways of light. To become ready for the coming of Jesus is to turn our destructive habits into constructive habits. In 1983, the Washington Post ran a story titled “Iowa turns Swords into Plowshares”. One single individual named Philip Riley of Iowa took the words found in today’s First Reading by the Prophet Isaiah literally, “they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks”, by pri- vately funding the making of plowshare pins. Each pin was a tiny metal replica of a sword that has been twisted into the shape of a plow. It is made from the metal of a scrapped U.S. Air Force F-84 Thunderjet fighter plane. Riley estimated the scrapped metal would produce about half a million pins. The pins became a symbol for waging peace, not war, because the alternative is unthinkable. Our world has become so violent that blood and gore entertain us on prime-time television and in movies, and children’s handheld video games award points for killing the enemy. Isaiah imagines a day when God’s people finally know the life that God intended for them. Nations actually seek wisdom and instruction, intending to walk in the way of truth. Justice is rendered, peace replaces violence. It all begins, of course, with a recognition that God is in charge. Swords do not get beaten into plowshares until men and women and children turn destructive habits into constructive habits. When we realize that a Mightier One than ourselves has ar- rived. May peace abide in us and every nation. UPCOMING EVENTS
