Page 2 The Church focuses on Mary on the 4th Sunday of December because 22,she 2019is the model of how we should be living our Advent. God the Father had prepared her from the first moment of her life to be a worthy mother of His Son. Like a faithful daughter of Israel, she had prayed throughout her youth for the coming of the Messiah. When she was a young girl, she discovered that she was part of God's answer to that prayer, but in a way that would far have exceeded any Hebrew maiden's prayers: not only would the Messiah be her son, but her son would also be God. Her "yes!" to the Archangel launched the proximate preparation for the birth of the Messiah. Each year, on this fourth Sunday of Advent, we explicitly follow the footsteps Mary traced on that first Advent. We're entering into Mary's response of faith that is a guide for us along our own pilgrimage of faith. And so with the Lord, let us climb within Mary's womb and listen to the beat of her contemplative heart that was treasuring within this greatest of all mysteries, so that our Christmas may be as fruitful as that first Christmas.

During the Annunciation, after the Archangel Gabriel had told Mary that the power of the Most High would overshadow her and she would conceive in her womb a Son whom she would call Jesus, she generously responds by saying “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38) Gabriel also told Mary that her cousin, Elizabeth was soon to give birth in her old age and that she was in need of support. As soon as the Archangel departed from Nazareth, Mary, "went with haste" to take care of her elderly kinswoman who was pregnant for the first time. This shows Mary’s great generosity and goodness. Through the light of the Holy Spirit, Elizabeth recognizes Mary’s privilege as the mother of the longed-for Messiah. She greets Mary in the words we are so familiar in our Hail Mary. Mary responds in prayer with the Magnificat, "My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior!" Mary's response to the blessing of God's love in coming into this world, into her heart and into her womb, was not just faith but prayer, which is properly called faith-in-action.

We too are called to magnify the Lord and rejoice in His love too. This can only be achieved by having God as the center of our lives. Mary reminds us that we should have faith in God, just as she had faith to recognize the work of God in her people’s salvation and in her own life. Her openness to God allowed God to work through her so that salvation might come to everyone. How do you come to know God’s will? Can you say yes to God like Mary did? Mary taught us this when she said, “yes.”

God, you are my ever-patient creator. You are my abundant invitation. Help me to respond to the layers of my life with a Yes you have heard before. Help me echo the Yes that Mary gave in these places of my life…

Through Mary's intercession, may we do what she did after the Annunciation and bring Jesus out to others who so need Him this Christmas, so that he can make them leap again! Praised be Jesus Christ!

ADVENT TREES THANK YOU Thank you for your support of our Advent Tree this year. Over 600 ornaments were taken from the trees and presents were delivered to 23 organizations including 11 skilled nursing, assisted, rehab, and independent living facilities. Every year the need is greater and every year you, our parishioners, do your part to make Christmas special for others in our community.

Thank you to the CTK 8th grade classes for their help in organizing the Gifts under the tree as well as bagging and carrying items to the cars so they could be delivered.

A special thank you to Lori Rowe and Lisa Letourneau for organizing this Advent project again this year. You are all greatly appreciated!

CTK PARISH CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE

Celebrate the Season This is a time for celebration! To welcome the King our Savior and to reflect on the goodness of those in our parish. Many good people have contributed time and talent to ensure this year long capital campaign, Preparing the Way, has been executed with excellence. Happily, our church home will receive an update thanks to the generosity of the parishioners. We are grateful to the KCK Archdiocese for the administration work of the capital campaign. They collected the pledge cards and provided guidance along the way.

Be Intentional Do you find joy in being a part of parish life? Continue to learn about the capital campaign, in this section of the bulletin. As the new year progresses so will the upgrades to Christ the King church. On Giving Tuesday, Father Matthew reminded us “We still need everyone’s pledge to achieve our goals. Whether your sacrificial gift is large or small or somewhere in between, we are still counting on your pledge to achieve our goals. Please make your pledge by the end of the year.”

Campaign Summary Our campaign leadership team will work closely with architects, engineers and contractors to construct a formal plan that will allow the projects to commence with phases of progression. This approach provides for an opportunity to start each phase as funds are available and lays a foundation that prepares for the next phase with minimal interruption to the ministries of our parish.

Prayer Works As Father Matthew has stated this campaign is really God’s campaign. Please continue to pray daily for the success of this campaign. Our goal is to give God glory and accomplish His will for our parish.

Who Am I To Judge?

In this study program featuring Edward Sri, we’ll explore the classical view of morality and find that it’s not merely a set of guiding principles for theoretical situations – it is an entire way of life. What is “right” and “wrong”? Is what’s right for you right for me? Is there a right and wrong for everyone, all the time? These are difficult questions to discuss in our culture. We live in a society that supports the opinion that each person should make up his/her own morality – that there is no moral truth that applies to everyone. Many of us wonder whether there really is an absolute right and wrong for everyone. Or maybe we accept that there is a moral standard for all, but we don’t know how to explain our moral convictions in a convincing way. Maybe some of us are afraid of saying anything is immoral because we’re afraid of offending others or of being labeled intolerant. How do we talk about morality in a relativistic world?

This 8-week program is offered Sundays 10:00-11:30 AM, January 5, through February 23, 2020 or Tuesdays 1:00 - 2:30 PM, January 7, through February 25, 2020. To register: Please complete the form in the foyer and return it to the church office along with the $15.00 registration fee by December 22, 2019. Fee per family for 1 student workbook. BECOME CATHOLIC Do you know someone who is interested in joining the Catholic church? Do you know someone who has fallen away and wants to come back? Do you know someone who wants to come into full communion into the church? Then invite them to join our RCIA class! Our classes have begun. We meet in the John XXIII room and meet most Sundays through Holy Saturday. Remember most people join the church because they have been INVITED by someone who is already an active member, so I encourage you all to reach out to anyone who may be interested. For more information or if you are interested in volunteering as a teacher or sponsor for RCIA, contact Angela Herman at [email protected].
