He was also among the first to assert an artistic identity in terms of the ''low'' pursuit of macho sports. (He was once a semi-professional motorcycle racer.) His Pop-ish icons combined Color Field abstraction with commonplace and commercial imagery. In his first exhibition in New York in 18 years, Mr. Bengston shows a small group of works from 1968 through 1973 to which he gave the titles ''Dentos'' and ''Draculas.'' In the ''Dentos,'' a military chevron takes dead center place; in the ''Draculas,'' the central motif is the silhouetted shape of an iris, lifted from the logo on Iris brand sugar packets. -

Lynda Hawryluk Taking the Drop – Surfing Memoirs, Blogging And
Lynda Hawryluk Taking the drop – Surfing Memoirs, Blogging and Identity Abstract: Surfing evokes images of sun-bronzed stoners with little more going on in their heads than the search for the next wave. Oceans of saltwater drown out any other thoughts. However, the number of memoirs and books describing surfing as a spiritual journey, using the surfing lifestyle as a metaphor for a greater search for meaning, belie these stereotypes. As a blogger, I've long struggled with the urge to reveal too much of my real identity online, preferring to hide behind Ambrose Pierce-like observations. A recent conversion to the surfing world has led me on a journey of a very different kind, one which has informed a change in my writing and identity. Previously stifled by academia's rigidity, I have found surfing has encouraged my creativity and allowed me to explore the idea of identity in my writing more than ever before. These changes in my online and real life writing are the focus of this paper, as well as providing an overview of the emergence of the surfing memoir and books about the spiritual nature of surfing. Biographical note: Lynda Hawryluk is a Lecturer in Literary and Cultural Studies at CQUniversity in Rockhampton, Queensland. She teaches creative writing, maintains a blog and is a late convert to surfing, but an avid one. Keywords: Writing—surfing—spirituality—memoir—blogging Hawryluk Taking the Drop Surfing is out of this world. You can’t imagine the thrill of the shooting the curl. It positively surpasses every living emotion I've ever had (Gidget, 1959). -

Inspired equally by historical coincidence, autoethnographic field work, and exploration of site, the piece was developed through 14 months of writing and devising. With palm trees, fabric, and a roving green screen, four actors, an in-audience musician, and a director-performer transform a bare stage into a shifting landscape, while the audience watches from the comfort of beach chairs. Drawing from strategies of postdramatic theater, performative autoethnography, and audience relations to installation and site-based performance, this work aimed to create an oscillating space in which story and image double and re-double upon themselves, the fictional interrupts the real, and the personal grazes the political.
