  • Nissan Delivers Stylish Fun with Altima Coupe
Test Drive: Nissan delivers stylish fun with Altima coupe Even though front-wheel-drive coupes aren't big sellers, Nissan took the financial risk to develop a sleek, two-door version of the redesigned 2008 Altima sedan and came up with a terrific mainstream coupe. Its stylish silhouette rivals the beauty of Nissan's Infiniti G35 luxury coupe (Test Drive, March 15). That might annoy those who paid twice as much for the Infiniti, but surely will appeal to those who want much of the G's visual cachet for considerably less money. "Every body panel is different from the (Altima) sedan, except the hood. The investment was significant," says John Curl,. an Altima product manager. "We didn't want to just build a two-door sedan." Power delivery in the V-6, regular-production test car was delightful. Nissan seems to have proprietary voodoo it works on CVTs (continuously variable automatic transmissions) to keep them from feeling like a manual transmission with a slipping clutch, as some rival CVTs do. Nail the throttle and there's a definite, solid downshift to a lower gear ratio for fast acceleration. No brutal revving of the engine without commensurate leap of the vehicle. Whatever Nissan does to the pulleys-and-belt CVT elevates it to the level of pleasing, appealing and satisfying. Handling of the loaded, $31,980 test car was sufficient for most drivers most of the time. The coupe's suspension is tuned differently than the sedan's, giving the two-door a crisper driving feel, which is an accomplishment because the Altima sedan feels pretty crisp and agile and sporty.

Technological innovation plays a major role in taking on this challenge. Old and new industrial powers alike are increasingly reforming their policy frameworks to encourage low-carbon investment and innovation. The research project “Technological trajectories for low-carbon innovation in China, Europe and India” explored to what extent, how and why technological pathways differ across countries. Case studies were conducted in electromobility and wind power technologies. Evolutionary economics has demonstrated how initial choices of technologies and institutions preclude certain options at later stages; hence, innovations evolve in an incremental and cumulative way, resulting in context-specific technological pathways.

With DNA sourced directly from the legendary 2000 GT, each and every Supra has shared the same core fundamentals: an inline-six up front, Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and a modern chassis. As Toyota’s purest expression of performance, Supra has redefined the sports car time and time again. And, as we prepare to launch the next chapter of Supra, let’s revisit the past to see how the marque evolved from grand tourer to pure driver’s car. 3.0 Premium shown in Renaissance Red 2.0. Prototype shown with options. Page 3 HERITAGE A40 (1978-1981) The Supra story starts with the Celica, which provided the base for the original first-gen Toyota Celica Supra (A40) in 1978. Using the Celica Liftback as a starting point, Toyota engineers lengthened the chassis, dropped in an advanced inline 6-cylinder engine and incorporated the latest in comfort and technology to create a true grand tourer. Still an upgraded version of the era’s Celica, the A60 was offered in two flavors: the luxurious “L-type” and the performance- minded “P-type.” With its larger wheels and tires, bulging fiberglass flares and optional aero, the P-type would lay the groundwork for Supra’s dedication to pure performance.

Cars that sit high in the air on skinny tires tell you that wagon trails were the highways of the day. The skinny tires fit into the wagon ruts, and the bodies sat high on the wheels for more ground clearance. In one afternoon, you can see how we have transitioned from buggies without horses to 200-mph supercars. You can see how our culture moved from the stodgy cars of the 1940s to the sexy Mus- tangs the Baby Boomers wanted to drive. The automobile and the personal mobility it affords made it, in my estimation, the most important invention of the 20th century. The Family Man’s Sports Car, The light Sports Saloon and Hot Hatchback. Part One 1920 to 1980 Alvis 12/75 sports saloon The hot hatch back has been with us since the mid seventies, sporting version’s of the small family hatch back saloons that had come to replace in much of the world the smaller booted/trunk saloon car. Of late many of the hot hatch models of this century have been fitted with ever increasingly larger engines in the relentless quest for even more speed, but there are still some models in production with modest sized engines in the spirit of the original hot hatches and the light sports saloons that came before them, with capacities up to 1600cc’s. What do I mean by light sports saloon, I am referring to the kind of light car, that is one with a moderate size engine, that was purchased not just for transport but one that will provide an increased degree of performance that will enhance the pleasure of motoring and that in some cases could take part in motorsport of one form or another. The sports saloon was a very British thing in the nineteen twenties, thirties and forties, with quite a few models on offer with that description, but for many of them it was unwarranted and I have only mentioned those with a sporting connection here. In most of the world in that period light cars were usually just for transport and if a sporting car was required it had a larger engine ,some times very large.

All-new for 2006, the MX-5 won the prestigious Japan Car of the Year and was also named a Car and Driver “10 Best”. MX-5 also is known as the car that brought the affordable, fun-to-drive, two-seat roadster segment back to life in 1989 and has continued to set sales records since, making it the world’s best-selling two-seat roadster, and cementing Mazda’s place in the annals of sports car manufacturers. As the ultimate ride for sheer driving and ownership pleasure the 2007 MX-5 Miata adds minor interior features and offers two new exterior colors. In addition, MX-5 adds a new Power Retractable Hard Top (PRHT) for 2007 (covered in separate release). Press Information Porsche 918 Spyder March 2012 Porsche 918 Spyder 1 Porsche 918 Spyder Evolution meets emotion: the technology behind tomorrow’s super sports car The future is taking shape: with more than half of its development time completed, the Porsche 918 Spyder is firmly on course to become the super sports car of tomorrow. As a plug-in hybrid vehicle, it logically combines a high-performance combustion engine with cutting-edge electric motors to deliver performance that is beyond extraordinary: the best of both worlds endows the 918 with the dynamics of a racing car packing more than 770 hp of power accompanied by fuel consumption, which at approximately three litres per 100 kilo - metres, is less than that of most modern compact cars. Moreover, Porsche is breaking yet more new ground with the technology demonstrator with spectacular solutions such as the full carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) body, fully adaptive aerodynamics, adaptive rear-axle steering and the upward-venting “top pipes” exhaust system. In the process, the 918 Spyder is offering a glimpse of what Porsche Intelligent Performance may be capable of in future. The 918 Spyder has been designed as a super sports car and the legitimate successor to the Carrera GT. As such, the first goal was obvious: improving yet again on the Carrera GT’s performance. As far as is currently known, the 918 Spyder will be significantly faster – both in terms of acceleration and also performance on the racing circuit: less than three seconds from zero to 100 km/h (Carrera GT: 3.9 seconds) and less than 7:22 minutes on the Nürburgring Nordschleife (Carrera GT: 7:32 minutes) is an unmistakable statement.

COVER STORY ELECTRIC MOBILITY THE NETWORKED HYBRID CONCEPT FOR SPORTS CARS Bosch Engineering GmbH has converted a sports car with a V12 internal combustion engine and manual six-speed transmission into a vehicle with an axle-split hybrid powertrain. By doing so, the Bosch subsidiary is demonstrating the potential of electrifi cation for utilising cross-domain systems knowledge to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, improve vehicle dynamics and performance, and expand customisation possibilities specifi cally in the sports car segment. 4 AUTHORS MOTIVATION The latest emissions standards to be adopted, which set the limits for 2015 and 2020, require ambitious technical progress in reducing fuel consumption.
