The Virginia Chamber Foundation is pleased to formally release the dates and open registration for the Blueprint Virginia 2030 Regional Tour.

Those who register will be invited to participate in the Blueprint Virginia 2030 Regional Tour survey. As part of the Blueprint Virginia 2030 development process, the Virginia Chamber Foundation has announced it will host a series of virtual meetings throughout Virginia, in partnership with its network of local, regional, and other chambers of commerce; and GO Virginia and VEDA. These meetings will serve to foster greater regional collaboration by bringing together leaders in business, economic development, workforce, education, housing, and other community representatives from across the Commonwealth to provide input for Virginia’s next statewide strategic plan.

Participants will have the opportunity to hear directly from Barry DuVal for an economic update and overview of the Blueprint Virginia 2030 process. Participants will also hear from representatives of GO Virginia and VEDA for a regional presentation. The initial results for the Regional Tour survey will be reviewed during each meeting. Most importantly, participants will have the opportunity to participate in an open dialogue to discuss policy recommendations for the final plan.

Speaker Biographies

Barry DuVal President & CEO Virginia Chamber of Commerce

Barry DuVal was named president and CEO of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce on April 28, 2010.

Under his leadership, the Chamber has become Virginia’s largest business advocacy group, growing from 847 members in 2010 to more than 26,000 members today. In 2013, the Chamber produced Blueprint Virginia – the Commonwealth’s first comprehensive business-led initiative to provide direction and long-term economic development planning for Virginia. In 2017, the Chamber released an update to the original Blueprint, Blueprint Virginia 2025, which engaged over 6,000 business and community leaders from around the Commonwealth to build an action plan for strengthening Virginia’s economic competitiveness and getting Virginia back to the top of business climate rankings.

Barry’s public service began in 1988 when he was elected to the Newport News City Council. In 1990 he was elected mayor of the city. He served as mayor from 1990 through 1996, when he stepped down to become the president and CEO of a regional economic development organization representing Southeast Virginia’s 1.6 million citizens.

From 1998 through 2002 Barry served as the Secretary of Commerce and Trade for the Commonwealth of Virginia. During his term as Secretary, Virginia attracted a record-setting 1,500 economic development projects representing 156,850 new jobs and $13.7 billion in private investment.

His private sector experience includes serving as president and CEO of DuVal Associates, Inc, a diversified real estate firm, from 1983-1996. Upon the completion of his term as the Secretary of Commerce and Trade, he served as president and CEO of Kaufman & Canoles Consulting, LLC, an economic development consulting firm specializing in public-private partnerships and strategic planning for business and government agencies.

Barry holds a Master’s (MLS) from American University Washington College of Law and a BS from James Madison University.

Alan Witt CEO Emeritus, PBMares Executive in Residence, Luter School of Business, Christopher Newport University Chair, Virginia Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors

Alan Witt currently serves as the Executive in Residence at the Luter School of Business at Christopher Newport University and as CEO Emeritus of PBMares, where he served as CEO from 1989-2021. Under his leadership, PBMares has strategically expanded to a leading Mid-Atlantic-based firm with a national presence as a top-100 accounting and business consulting firm.

A licensed CPA in Virginia, Alan has a passion for his chosen career and has served in multiple roles over the years, helping others expand their expertise. He has held several mentoring and leadership positions with groups like the RSM US Alliance of accounting firms, where he served on the Executive Advisory Board, and the VSCPA, where he has served on the Accounting and Auditing Task Force and committees focused on ethics and chapter activities. He also served on the AICPA’s credit union committee and chaired the group that developed the AICPA Audits of Credit Unions Guide. Additionally, Alan was selected to sit on the national executive advisory board that formed the AICPA G-400 which advocates for the needs of the top 100-500 firms.

Alan’s community efforts include serving on the boards of the Hampton Roads Business Roundtable, Reinvent Hampton Roads, TowneBank, the Peninsula Community Foundation, as well as the Virginia Chamber of Commerce where serves as Chair. He also held leadership roles with the Commonwealth Transportation Board, the Newport News Industrial Development Authority, Christopher Newport University, Riverside Health System, and served as a Newport News City Council member.

Pete Haytaian Executive Vice President and President, Commercial & Specialty Business Division Anthem, Inc.

Peter D. Haytaian serves as Executive Vice President and President for Anthem, Inc.’s Commercial and Specialty Business Division. He is responsible for the strategic direction, performance, and growth of Anthem’s commercial business, which includes national accounts, individual and local group business and specialty products. Haytaian previously served as Executive Vice President and President of Anthem’s Government Business Division. He joined Anthem in 2012 as part of the Amerigroup acquisition, serving as President of the Medicaid business. While at Amerigroup, he held a number of senior leadership positions, including CEO of the Medicaid North Region and head of the company’s Medicare Advantage business. Prior to joining Amerigroup, Haytaian served in a variety of leadership roles at Oxford Health Plans Inc., and was a regulatory attorney and lobbyist on healthcare and election law issues at Graham, Curtin & Sheridan PA.

Nazzic Keene CEO SAIC

Nazzic Keene is chief executive officer of SAIC (NYSE: SAIC), headquartered in Reston, Virginia. With annual pro forma revenues of $7.1 billion and 25,500 employees, SAIC provides system integration, engineering, and IT solutions to defense, intelligence, and civilian agencies.

Keene became CEO and was elected to SAIC’s Board of Directors in August 2019. She joined SAIC in 2012 and has previously held several increasingly responsible executive positions with the company, including chief operating officer, president of the company’s Global Markets & Missions sector, and senior vice president for Corporate Strategy.

As COO, a position she held starting in 2017, Keene was responsible for overseeing daily operations of the corporation, including its long- term strategy for sustained profitable growth.

Keene has three decades of experience in the information systems and technology services industries, with more than 20 years in executive management. Prior to joining SAIC, Keene was the senior vice president and general manager for U.S. Enterprise Markets at CGI and led the company’s U.S. expansion. This included all aspects, from strategy development and execution to operational excellence and leadership development.

Keene began her career in the communications and IT industry after completing her bachelor’s degree at the University of Arizona.

She is the recipient of the Washington Business Journal’s 2018 COO of the Year Award, as well as the Washington Business Journal‘s Women Who Mean Business Award.

Keene is currently a member of ADP’s board of directors and the Inova Health System Board of Trustees. She has previously served on the boards of Wolf Trap, Capital Partners for Education, Year-Up National Capital Region, and the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS).

She was also an executive committee member of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Sean Connaughton President & CEO Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association

Sean T. Connaughton has served as President and CEO since 2014. Prior to joining VHHA, he served as Virginia’s Transportation Secretary from 2010-2014 in the Cabinet of Governor Robert F. McDonnell. In that role, he led efforts to pass a major transportation funding package for the Commonwealth in 2013.

Connaughton served in a Presidentially-appointed, U.S. Senate-confirmed position as Administrator of the Maritime Administration from 2006-2009, and was Corporate Vice President of Government Affairs for the American Bureau of Shipping. Connaughton’s public service also extends to elected office – from 2000-2006, he was Chairman of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors, which is the chief elected position in Virginia’s second largest county – and the armed forces.

Connaughton served as a commissioned officer on active duty with the United States Coast Guard, and later joined the United States Naval Reserve, retiring from that service with the rank of Commander. Connaughton is a licensed attorney admitted to practice in Virginia and the District of Columbia. He practiced law for 15 years with private firms and has appeared before the United States Supreme Court.

He has a Bachelor’s degree from the United States Merchant Marine Academy, a Master’s degree from Georgetown University, a law degree from , and he graduated from the United States Naval War College. Connaughton has received numerous awards over the years, including Alumnus of the Year from George Mason University, the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of Counties, the Vincent T. Hirsch Maritime Award for Outstanding Leadership from the Navy League of the United States, Maritime Person of the Year from the Propeller Club of the United States, the Maritime Samaritan Award from the Apostleship of the Sea of the United States, and Government Man of the Year from the Maritime Port Council of Greater . He also has been designated a Henry Toll Fellow by the Council of State Governments, a Virginia Institute of Political Leadership Fellow, and recently was named a Fellow by the Virginia Law Foundation. He is married to Teresa and has two adult children, Courtney and Sean Jr.

Bill Downey CEO Riverside Health System

Bill joined Riverside Health System in May of 1981 as an Administrative Extern upon completion of his undergraduate degree from James Madison University. After completing his Masters in Health Administration at MCV (VCU) he returned to Riverside in May of 1985 and held numerous executive role until leaving Riverside in 1995 to become President and CEO of Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia and CEO of Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point in Hudson, Florida. Bill returned to Riverside in 2001 and became President and CEO in 2012.

Bill has been involved in numerous community organizations over the years, including serving, and as a Board member of The Jamestown- Yorktown Foundation, Inc., the Hampton Roads Economic Development Authority, The Virginia Chamber of Commerce, The Hampton Roads Business Roundtable, Virginia Business Council, Go Virginia Hampton Roads, Towne Bank-Peninsula and Premier, Inc. Bill is also a past chairman of An Achievable Dream, the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association, the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula, Virginia Living Museum and as President of the Board of Greater Peninsula NOW.

In 2018, Bill was recognized at the 50th annual Peninsula Humanitarian Awards presented by the Peninsula Chapter of Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities (VCIC). The awards honored individuals and organizations promoting respect and understanding among people of diverse racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds in the Peninsula community. Just recently, Bill was recognized by Hampton Roads Community Action Program with their 2020 Community Builders award which highlights individuals who make a positive impact on the Hampton Roads Region.

Dr. J. Stephen Jones President & CEO Inova Health System

J. Stephen Jones is president and CEO of Inova, the Washington, DC region’s leading not-for-profit healthcare system serving more than 2 million people annually in its five hospitals and multiple ambulatory programs. He is also Professor of Urology at the University of Virginia, which is working with Inova to bring undergraduate medical education and expanded research to Fairfax. Inova has “Straight A” ratings by Leapfrog and is the first and only large health system in America to have every hospital rated five stars by CMS.

Dr. Jones previously served as President of Cleveland Clinic Regional Hospitals and Family Health Centers. He was previously Department Chair and held the Leonard Horvitz and Samuel Miller Distinguished Chair in Urologic Oncology. This endowed chair has now been renamed the J. Stephen Jones Distinguished Chair in Urology Research and is to be held in perpetuity by the sitting Cleveland Clinic Urology Department chair.

He earned a BS in Zoology at the J. William Fulbright College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Arkansas and his M.D. at UAMS. After residency at Vanderbilt University he joined the Springfield Clinic/St. John’s Health System in Missouri. Under his chairmanship the Department of Urological Surgery became the highest rated community urology program in America, according to U.S. News & World Report.

He has published over 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts and over 40 book chapters. He is Editor-in-Chief of The American Urological Association journal, Urology Practice. He has previously been Editor of Urology & Kidney Disease News, Associate Editor for Renal & Urology News as well as Urology, and served on the Editorial Board of British Journal of Urology. He has published two books and is editor of five medical textbooks. The American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business named him to Beta Gamma Sigma as one of the top 20% of business school graduates in the nation upon graduation from the Weatherhead School of Business at Case Western Reserve University in 2010.

Castle Connolly consistently lists him in “America’s Top Doctors” signifying the top 1% of all cancer physicians, in addition to top 1% of urologists.

Dr. K. Craig Kent CEO UVA Health

K. Craig Kent, MD, is the executive vice president for health affairs at the University of Virginia and CEO of UVA Health. He is responsible for overseeing all UVA Health operations. A researcher, educator and physician, Dr. Kent is an internationally recognized leader in academic medicine.

He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and former chair (2019-2020) of the American Board of Surgery. Prior to joining UVA Health, Dr. Kent served as dean of The Ohio State University College of Medicine, vice president for health sciences and the Leslie H. and Abigail S. Wexner Dean’s Chair in Medicine. In his nearly four years as dean, Dr. Kent helped Ohio State make significant investments in research through growth of infrastructure and recruitment. Before Ohio State, Dr. Kent served as chair of the Department of Surgery at University of Wisconsin School of Medicine & Public Health, and was chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and Columbia College of Physician Surgeons.

He has been a funded researcher for more than 25 years, investigating molecular mechanisms underlying vascular disease with the goal of developing new treatments utilizing innovative methods of drug delivery. Dr. Kent has authored more than 325 articles and 65 book chapters, and has served on the editorial boards of multiple medical journals. He has lectured nationally and internationally with more than 50 named visiting professorships and keynote presentations. Dr. Kent earned his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco where he also completed his surgical residency. He then completed a research and clinical fellowship in vascular surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Faraaz Yousuf President Richmond Market Bon Secours Mercy Health

Faraaz Yousuf is the Richmond Market President for Bon Secours Mercy Health, a $1.5 billion health system with seven acute-care hospitals in Richmond, the Northern Neck, Petersburg and Emporia. Prior to becoming Market President, Faraaz served as the Chief Strategy Officer for the Bon Secours Mercy Health Atlantic Group, responsible for all strategic planning across the five-state geography. Bon Secours Mercy Health is the fifth largest Catholic health system in the U.S, and Bon Secours is the only Catholic system in the Commonwealth. The hospitals include St. Mary’s, Memorial Regional Medical Center, Richmond Community Hospital, St. Francis Medical Center, Rappahannock General, Southside Medical Center and Southern Virginia Medical Center. Bon Secours Richmond employs more than 10,000 employees, including the largest primary care physician network in Central Virginia. As Market President for Richmond, Faraaz is responsible for seven acute-care facilities which support a full-range of services, including Centers of Excellence in cardiac surgery, women’s and children’s services, orthopaedics, bariatrics, surgery, oncology, emergency care and ambulatory services. Faraaz is also responsible for helping to advance a culture of innovation and excellence, while bringing best practices for efficiency and effective care delivery across the market.

Prior to joining Bon Secours Mercy Health, he spent more than 15 years in health care operations and leadership roles, most recently President and Senior Vice President of LifeBridge Health, a $1.8b Maryland-based health system. In this capacity, Faraaz was responsible for the system’s county-based hospital as well as enterprise-wide quality, real estate and construction, and population health and data analytics.

Prior to LifeBridge, Faraaz held chief operating officer roles with Sutter Health and Hospital Corporation of America (HCA).

Faraaz holds a Master of Healthcare Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Dr. Deborah Sesok-Pizzini Chief Medical Officer LabCorp Diagnostics

Dr. Deborah Sesok-Pizzini is a Clinical Pathologist and the former Chief of Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine, Department Patient Safety Officer and Vice-Chief of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Professor of Clinical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at The Perelman School of Medicine. Deborah received her MBA with a concentration in Finance from Villanova University and her MD from Penn State College of Medicine. She joined Labcorp on Jan 11, 2021 as the new Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and Senior Vice President of Labcorp Diagnostics. In addition to her role as CMO, she will continue to mentor and teach as adjunct faculty at the University of Pennsylvania, Perelman School of Medicine.

Deborah is a member and active in several organizations including AABB, CAP, and ASCP. She is Treasurer/Secretary on The Intersociety Council for Pathology Information and a Member of the ASCP Pathologist Council. She served for several years as a Board Member at the Penn-Jersey American Red Cross and was a strong advocate for blood donation and efforts to diversify the blood supply. She publishes in the field of patient safety and pediatric transfusion medicine and is the contributing editor for CAP Today clinical pathology abstracts column. Her research interests include patient safety, quality improvement, cellular and pediatric transfusion therapy, leadership and mentoring.

Karin Addison Director, State Affairs Troutman Sanders Strategies

Karin Addison has over 20 years experience lobbying the Virginia General Assembly and Executive Branch offices. Karin brings a unique depth of experience to the Troutman Sanders Strategies team through her service in state government, contract lobbying and in-house lobbying for a Fortune 58 company. Karin has an array of expertise at the state level in the areas of healthcare, human services, procurement and appropriations. She currently assists clients in creating relationships with legislators and lobbying the General Assembly, identifying health and human service related procurement opportunities and understanding the impact of Medicaid program changes.

Prior to joining Troutman Sanders Strategies, Karin worked as the Virginia lead for Humana Corporate Affairs, providing support for the company’s contract with the state as a Medicaid-Medicare Plan for the Commonwealth Coordinated Care program in addition to legislative

She also served as Deputy Secretary for Children’s Health and Education under Governor McDonnell advising both Secretary of Health and Human Resources and Secretary of Education . Karin also worked as a contract lobbyist for several firms including owning her own lobbying firm before joining the McDonnell Administration.

Karin’s experience in state government and as a contract lobbyist for a variety of health care and education clients provides her with a unique ability to guide clients through the legislative, budgetary and business development process.

Courtney Christian Senior Director of Policy and Research PhRMA

Courtney Christian is a Senior Director of Policy and Research at PhRMA focusing on state-based reforms impacting health insurance, prescription drug coverage in public health programs, and on health equity. Prior to joining PhRMA, she worked at the Black Women’s Health Imperative as Director of Policy and Advocacy, and on Capitol Hill for a number of years in a series of roles, including as Legislative Director. Courtney is a Florida State football fan (and alum), aspiring chef, and mom to an energetic preschooler.

Iris J. Lundy MHL, BSN, RN, CHOP Director, Health Equity Sentara Healthcare

Iris has worked in healthcare for her entire career, including more than 18 years at Sentara Healthcare. Iris became the first Director of Health Equity at Sentara Healthcare in 2019. In this role, she works to identify and close inequity gaps in healthcare in our communities.

Priorities for Lundy include measurement of disparities and what factors contribute to them, and development of an action plan to reduce disparities in care. This will include screening and diagnosis rates for chronic health issues such as hypertension and diabetes, and prevalence of prostate and breast cancers in minority communities, utilization rates for treatments and development of initiatives for minorities, immigrants, homeless patients and other marginalized groups, including LGBTQ persons and individuals with disabilities.

Equity is a rapidly evolving issue in health care, touching on access to care, or lack of it, across racial, ethnic and geographic groups, and how implicit or unconscious bias among providers affects treatment decisions and outcomes. Equity is a complex issue involving social determinants of health and Community Health Needs Assessments hospitals perform.

Prior to her role as Director of Health Equity, Iris was the Director of the Accreditation and Regulatory Department since 2016. Under her leadership Sentara implemented the ISO 9001 standards across 12 Sentara hospitals and provided regulatory guidance for successful certification of Comprehensive Stroke, Primary Stroke and Acute Stroke Programs and first-in-the-nation Primary Stroke Certification Plus. Iris joined Sentara Healthcare in 2002.

Iris is also a United State Army veteran where she served in the Active and Reserve Component as Tactical Equipment Operator, Supply Specialist, Legal Liaison and Combat Medic.

Dr. Christina Stasiuk Market Medical Executive – Mid-Atlantic Region Cigna

Dr. Christina Stasiuk joined Cigna full time in 2003 after 14 years of solo practice in internal medicine. She is a recognized leader, team builder, and innovator who brings to life initiatives that improve the quality and value of health care.

Dr. Christina’s leadership of Cigna's Health Equity Council resulted in receiving the Surgeon General’s Medallion in recognition of its exceptional achievements in increasing awareness about and closing gaps in health disparities. She partners closely with the Center of Health Equity at the University of Maryland on HAIR, a black barbershop initiative focused on improving health in the minority community. She is a member of the American Osteopathic Association, the Minority Health Committee of the American College of Osteopathic Internists, the Medical Society of Virginia, The Pennsylvania Medical Society, the Philadelphia County Medical Society, the editorial board of “American Health & Drug Benefits”, and the Executive Board of the Virginia Center for Health Innovation.

Dr. Stasiuk graduated from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and was named a fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Internists. She holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Buffalo and a master’s degree in natural sciences from Roswell Park Memorial Institute.

An avid hiker and charity-sponsored 5K participant, Dr. Christina also volunteers for organizations such as Lyric Fest, Philadelphia Academies, and the City of Philadelphia – Medical Reserve Corps. She is eagerly sought out as a speaker, mentor for professional development, and for restaurant recommendations in Philadelphia.

Maria Harris Tildon, Executive Vice President of Public Policy and Government Affairs CareFirst BlueCross and BlueShield

Maria Harris Tildon is Executive Vice President for Public Policy & Government Affairs for CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, the largest health care insurer in the Mid-Atlantic region, serving nearly 3.2 million members with more than 5,100 employees in Maryland, the District of Columbia and Northern Virginia. As Executive Vice President, Ms. Tildon is responsible for managing all matters related to public policy and government relations. Ms. Tildon joined CareFirst in September of 2006.

Prior to joining, CareFirst, Ms. Tildon was Senior Vice President for External Affairs for The Century Council, a not-for-profit organization focused on advancing policies and programs to address underage drinking and drunk driving. As Senior Vice President, Ms. Tildon was responsible for all communications, marketing, federal and state government affairs and national field efforts on behalf of The Council. Ms. Tildon began her tenure at The Council in November of 1999 after serving in several capacities in the Clinton Administration at the U.S. Department of Commerce under Secretaries Ronald H. Brown and William Daley including Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Import Administration and Deputy Director of Public Affairs. As Deputy Director, Ms. Tildon was responsible for oversight of all media relations and outreach efforts for the Department of Commerce’s thirteen agencies and 30,000 employees.

Prior to joining the Clinton Administration, Ms. Tildon practiced law at Venable, LLP in Washington, DC focusing on civil and criminal litigation in federal and state courts with a special emphasis on business litigation and environmental criminal defense. Ms. Tildon is a member of the Maryland and District of Columbia Bar Associations, the Board of Trustees of BGE, an Exelon Company, and has been appointed by Governor O’Malley to the board of Trustees of the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Company.

Ms. Tildon also serves on several not-for-profit boards including Healthcare for the Homeless, Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women and DC Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee. Prior board service includes Commissioner on the Maryland Community Health Resources Commission, The Community Foundation of the National Capitol Area, The Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, The Hippodrome Foundation, Capitol Breast Care of Washington and The Park School of Baltimore and the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

Mason Shea Principal Mercer

Mason is a Principal and actuary who works in Mercer's Richmond office. He works with the Health practice providing analysis and strategy around national healthcare plans for clients in the Richmond market as well as larger clients across the country. He is heavily involved in intellectual capital projects, being the technical architect of national tools like QualPic, CRAFT, and the LTD valuation tool.

Mason is a national resource for consultants and clients regarding healthcare reform analysis and strategy, as well as having experience with pricing, reserving, discount analysis, as well as Medicare Supplement. He sits on Mercer’s Health Innovation Council, the VA Chamber of Commerce Health Care Executive Committee, and is a member of Mercer’s Health Policy Team.

Mason has a BS in mathematics from Virginia Tech as well as a BA in music with a concentration in vocal performance. He is a Fellow in the Society of Actuaries (FSA), a member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA), and a Fellow in the Conference of Consulting Actuaries (FCA).

Dr. John Phipps CEO OrthoVirginia

Dr. Phipps is an experienced physician executive and healthcare leader. He has held various positions, including president of the Novant Health Medical Group. Most recently, he served as the system leader for care transformation at Inova Health System. He has over 20 years’ experience in clinical practice as an endocrinologist.

Dr. Phipps received his bachelor’s and medical degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He stayed there for his internal medicine residency and completed his endocrinology fellowship at the University of Virginia.

Dr. James Thompson Founder and Chief Medical Officer of the Master Center for Addiction Medicine and President, Virginia Chapter of the American Society for Addiction Medicine

Dr. Jimmy Thompson is co-founder and Chief Medical Officer for the Master Center for Addiction Medicine, the leading provider of comprehensive outpatient addiction treatment in Virginia. He graduated from VCU School of Medicine in 2004 and completed an Internal Medicine residency at MCV Hospitals. During residency, Dr. Thompson joined the American Society for Addiction Medicine and in 2013 was named a Fellow of the American Society for Addiction Medicine. Dr. Thompson was one of the first Richmond area physicians to be certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine. In 2020, he was elected President of the Virginia Chapter of the American Society of Addiction Medicine.

Karen C. Velkey Corp. Vice President, Compensation & Benefits Huntington Ingalls Industries

Karen Velkey is corporate vice president of compensation and benefits for Huntington Ingalls Industries, America’s largest military shipbuilding company and a provider of manufacturing, engineering and management services to the nuclear energy, oil and gas markets.

Named to this position in 2015, she is responsible for formulating and maintaining competitive compensation programs for HII, including executive compensation, salary and wage administration, and short and long-term incentive programs as well as designing and implementing company investments in physical, financial, and mental wellbeing.

Velkey has more than 20 years of experience in human resources. Her most recent role was director, corporate compensation for HII, and previously worked at HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division, and Northrop Grumman Corp.

Velkey currently serves on the board of the Virginia Living Museum and is co-chair of the health care executive committee for the Virginia Chamber of Commerce.

Dr. Patrice Weiss Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer Carilion Clinic

As chief medical officer, Dr. Weiss is responsible for the operation of Carilion’s multi-specialty physicians group, which employs more than 700 physicians and 300 nurse practitioners and physician assistants across 60 medical specialties throughout Virginia. She leads Carilion’s efforts to balance clinical, education and research practice to assure clinical excellence to reduce cost of care while improving quality and the patient experience. Dr. Weiss joined Carilion in 2007 as the vice chair of the Department of OB/GYN. She is chair of the American Hospital Association’s Committee on Clinical Leadership. For four consecutive years (2016-2020), she has been named one of Becker’s Hospital Review’s “100 Hospital and Health System CMOs to Know.” She has published numerous publications and has authored or co- authored a variety of textbooks and other educational resources. Dr. Weiss lectures on her passions of patient safety, medical errors/the second victim, leadership, emotional intelligence and medical education.
