QUINN ABSTRACT Probably the oldest rocks in Rhode Island are the Blackstone Series of Pre- cambrian(?) age. These and several other groups of metamorphic rocks in the State include quartzite, quartz-mica schist, greenstone, amphibolite, marble, and several types of gneiss. All were folded and metamorphosed one or more times before the Pennsylvanian Period. Intrusive into these older metamorphic rocks are varied plutonic rocks that range from metadiorite through quartz diorite and granodiorite to granite, and from strongly gneissic syntectonic granitic rocks to almost massive granites. These plutonic rocks probably are of Paleozoic age, and they may belong to one series or to more than one. After solidifying at depth, they were exposed at the surface by erosion before the formation of the volcanic, hypabyssal, and plutonic rocks of the East Greenwich Group. This group and the Quincy Granite of northern Rhode Island were exposed by erosion before Penn­ sylvanian time when the Narragansett basin rocks were deposited. The Narragansett basin contains several thousand feet of coarse clastic non- marine rocks, which contain plant fossils and some meta-anthracite. These rocks were folded, faulted, and progressively metamorphosed in Pennsylvanian or post-Pennsylvanian time. They were also intruded by the Narragansett Pier Granite, which in turn was intruded by the Westerly Granite. Two masses of vein quartz and several mafic dikes have also been mapped. The Raritan Forma­ tion ( ?) of Late Cretaceous age is exposed on Block Island. INTRODUCTION Various aspects of the geology of Khode Island have been treated in many reports published over a long period of time. Since 1944, almost all the bedrock of the State has been mapped in a series of quadrangle maps on scales of 1:31,680 and 1:24,000. These were done under a cooperative project between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Khode Island Development Council and predecessor State agencies. Ehode Island probably is the first State to be geologically mapped on a scale of 1:31,680 (2 inches to 1 mile) or larger. On the basis of these maps, a geologic map of the whole State has been compiled on a scale of 1:125,000 (pi. 1). 2 BEDROCK GEOLOGY OF RHODE ISLAND The present report, which is the descriptive text to accompany this map, is based mainly on the quadrangle reports; unpublished maps have also been made available by H. E. Dixon, U.S. Geological Survey, and G. E. Moore, Jr., Ohio State University and U.S. Geological Survey. Most of the information on Block Island has been provided by C. A. Kaye, U.S. Geological Survey. This help is gratefully acknowledged. I mapped several other areas, chiefly in quadrangles that are mostly in Massachusetts or Connecticut. RC held four workshops in northern, central, southern and eastern RI in 1994 to refine draft river classifications. Governor Lincoln Almond inaugurated January 1, 1995. Michael Cassidy, Planner for the City of Pawtucket, became RC chair. RC, working with the Divison of Planning, created digital maps of the state's watersheds. The State Planning Council adopted the RI Rivers Policy and Classification Plan, in January 1998, as State Guide Plan Element 162. RC established policies for recognizing local watershed councils in 1998. The Blackstone, Saugatucket and Wood-Pawcatuck were first river systems to have watershed councils designated by RC. Note: Designated watershed councils have certain legal authority and standing to represent their water bodies in state and local jurisdictions as well as be eligible for state grants via RC. 2001-2007: Meg Kerr became RC chair. General Assembly commences in 2001 providing annual legislative grants to RC from $22,000 to $52,000 range. Annual grant rounds commence from RC to designated local watershed councils generally in $2,500 to $7,500 range from Fiscal Year 2002 to the present.

Hope Bay (MHB) and Narragansett Bay (NB) is simulated using the unstructured grid, finite-volume coastal ocean model (FVCOM). With an accurate geometric representation of irregular coastlines and islands and sufficiently high horizontal resolution in narrow channels, FVCOM provides an accurate simulation of the tidal wave in the bays and also resolves the strong tidal flushing processes in the narrow channels of MHB-NB. Eddy shedding is predicted on the lee side of these channels due to current separation during both flood and ebb tides. There is a significant interaction in the tidal flushing process between MHB-NB channel and MHB-Sakonnet River (SR) channel. As a result, the phase of water transport in the MHB-SR channel leads the MHB-NB channel by 90o. The residual flow field in the MHB and NB features multiple eddies formed around headlands, convex and concave coastline regions, islands, channel exits and river mouths. The formation of these eddies are mainly due to the current separation either at the tip of the coastlines or asymmetric tidal flushing in narrow channels or passages. Process-oriented modeling experiments show that horizontal resolution plays a critical role in resolving the asymmetric tidal flushing process through narrow passages.

Oldale U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map MF-1186 1980 INTRODUCTION This report presents results of marine studies conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) during the summers of 1975 and 1976 in eastern Rhode Island Sound and Vineyard Sound (fig. 1) located off the southeastern coast of Massachusetts. The study was made in cooperation with the Massachusetts Department of Public Works and the New England Division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It covered an area of the Atlantic Inner Continental Shelf between latitude 41° 12' and 41° 33'N, and between longitude 70° 37' and 71° 15'W (see index map). Major objectives included assessment of sand and gravel resources, environmental impact evaluation both of offshore mining of these resources and of offshore disposal of solid waste and dredge spoil material, identification and mapping of the offshore geology, and determination of the geologic history of this part of the Inner Shelf. A total of 670 kilometers (km) of closely spaced high- resolution seismic-reflection profiles, 224 km of side-scan sonar data, and 16 cores totaling 90 meters (m) of recovered sediment, were collected during the investigation. This report is companion to geologic maps published for Cape Cod Bay (Oldale and O'Hara, 1975) and Buzzards Bay, Mass. (Robb and Oldale, 1977). Lon’s chief geological interests included the petrology, age, and origin of the rocks of the northern Appalachian Mountains, especially the late Paleozoic intrusives of Rhode Island, the pre-Pennsylvanian igneous and metamorphic rocks of southern New England, and the plutonic rocks of New Hampshire. Of his many geological accomplishments, the greatest was the completion of the map of the bedrock geology of Rhode Island, published in Bulletin 1295 of the U.S. Geological Survey in 1971, on a scale of 1:125,000. Geologic maps are the basic material for under­ standing the geology of the upper part of the crust. A formal mapping program in Rhode Island began in 1944, when the state arranged a cooperative program with the U.S. Geological Survey. Excellent topographic sheets, published as IV i' quadrangles on scales of one inch to 2,640 or 2,000 feet were available as base maps. Most of the geologic mapping was done by university personnel working as part-time employees of the Survey. As Lon pointed out in Bulletin 1295, Rhode Island is the only state for which the bedrock geological map is based on maps prepared on a scale of 1:31,680 or 1:24,000. He modestly failed to mention that he personally—sometimes with an associ­ ate—mapped 35% of the state.
