ABBREVIATIONS AND ACRONYMS ....................................................... 197 APPENDIX 1: APPLICATIONS AND IMPACT 1.1 Examples of Research Findings and Relation to SDGs Bangladesh Antibiotics in chicken SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being Food security The residue level of different antibiotics (tetracycline, oxytetracycline and chlortetracycline) were determined in broiler chicken meat, at a limit of quantification of 0.13-0.56 ng/g. The maximum residue levels (MRL) are 200 ng/g according to the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (2017) and CODEX Alimentarius for human health protection. None of the antibiotics were detected in the meat samples. (IPICS BAN:04) Quality of azithromycin SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being Pharmaceutics Azithromycin is an antibiotic heavily used in Bangladesh for infections caused by bacteria. The quality of tablets from nine manufacturers was investigated, and the indicated content of the active ingredient was verified in all cases. (IPICS BAN:04) Contaminants in marine and fresh-water fish SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being Food security SDG 14 –Life Below Water Environmental Chemistry Thirteen marine fish and twelve fresh-water fish samples from different super markets in Dhaka were examined regarding the level of 20 organochlorine pesticides (OPCs), heavy metals, microplastics All OPCs were below the permitted level set by EC, 2004 and FAO/WHO, 2016. In the marine fish, all the metals concentrations were below the permitted limit set by FAO/WHO 2004 as well as the Bangladesh Food Act 1983 and Food Regulations 1985, whereas a few of the fresh-water fish had concentrations exceeding the MRLs. Eight of the marine fish samples were suspected to contain microplastics, and a variety of microplastics were identified in the fresh- water fish. (IPICS BAN:04) Contamination by leather industries SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation Environmental Chemistry SDG 14 – Life Below Water Environmental Chemistry SDG 15 – Life on Land Environmental Chemistry Leather industries may pose serious threats to the environment due to the dumping of both solid and liquid wastes into the environment. In this study, chromium (Cr) concentrations of soil and water samples from Dhaleshwari river bank near to the Savar Tannery Estate (STE) were examined. The Cr was found to be significantly higher in soil (39 to almost 700 mg/kg) compared to water (< 0.005 mg/L). Water samples were collected from the surface level and may have been diluted due to the high flow in the river. (IPICS BAN:04) Antidiabetic effects of the plant Artemisia vulgaris SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being Medical chemistry In a chronic exposure experiment with rats, it was found that the ethanol extract of Artemisia vulgaris improves glucose metabolism. (IPICS ANRAP) 1 Antidiabetic effects of the plant Psidium guajava SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being Medical chemistry In a chronic exposure experiment with rats, it was found that the ethanol extract of Psidium guajava possesses antidiabetic activity. The plant extract stimulated insulin secretion, improved dyslipidemia and enhanced glycogenesis in the liver. (IPICS ANRAP) Test of medical instrumentation on patients in intensive care SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being Medical physics The Focused Impedance Method (FIM) (including Pigeon Hole Imaging, PHI), was further developed and used to monitor stomach emptying in 20 patients in an intensive care unit at a hospital. The new method gave correct results in 80% of the cases. Necessary computerised instrumentation was also successfully developed for this study. (IPPS BAN:04) Anomalous increase in conduction velocity in stretched myelinated nerves SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being Medical physics A comprehensive electrical model for conduction in myelinated nerves using Distribution of F- Latency (DFL) could for the first time identify and explain an anomalous increase in conduction velocity in stretched myelinated nerves although experimental observations exist since more than thirty years. (IPPS BAN:04) Pain relief SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being
